Jacob Young in practice

Maybe Coach Pikiell should hire Big Ten refs for practice sessions. Would let them know we are trying to get things right, and they might even open their good eye during games that Rutgers plays, especially road games.
Or get some of the officiating experts on this board to volunteer at practices. Cheaper alternative.

Do we know that this isn't done? Football definitely does this.

The way these refs are working a game every day or every other day, I can't see how they would have time.

Young is a really good player. His BEST attribute though that no one realizes is his defense. He will from day 1 be our best on ball defender on the team. Think Paul Gause, seton hall type of good on D

I love Tez defense and attitude. If you’re right about young, gonna be a tough tough team next year.

Also his ability to penetrate hopefully will give Geo a lot more space to shoot. Team still needs more shooters tho.

Jacob Young can join a special squad.

PG Nigel Johnson (best player on roster 2015)
SG Jacob Young (best player on roster 2018)
SF Peter Kiss (best scorer on roster 2017)
PF Wally Judge (best player on roster 20??)
C ????? can't put Brent Dabbs because he helped us make our last NCAAT

I watched about 6 full-game films of Texas from 2017-2018 and studied Young's game about 3-4 weeks ago. I suggest looking up texas games from last year on youtube there's a ton of full game tapes available. The problem with young at texas was A) he was their best defender as a guard b) he was like the #3 scoring option as a guard, he was not the go to guy and I feel he's much better suited being a number 1 or number 2 scorer who has sets run for him. He has a good skill set, quick off the dribble, smooth looking stroke, and go in transition. He's gonna be a really solid pick up

Can he shoot the three?

His numbers at Texas:
Freshman: 25/110 (.227)
Sophomore: 30/93 (.323)

He also didn't get to the FT line very often. In 1044 minutes over two seasons, he had 36 attempts. By contrast, in Geo's freshman year he had 1044 minutes and 65 attempts, and already in 784 minutes this year he has 66 attempts. For his career, he's taken 1.4 FTs per 40 min, which would be the lowest on Rutgers this year.

I always thought Peter Kiss was gonna be a dud and I never bought the nigel hype. I'll admit I bought the wally judge hype. Honestly, it's part of the reason why at first I thought Jacob Young was just gonna be another dud but then I watched tape on him, and he's a different type of cat. He's gonna be really good for us

i hope you are right.....
1. In 2 years and 63 games he has made a grand total of 26 FTs
2. He is 55-203 in his career from 3 27.1%
3. He had 4 DNP in conference play (was he hurt)
4. It took an injury for him to get starter's minutes. the guy ahead of him on paper doesnt look overly impressive

tape mean zero, its about what happens when a player gets on the court in game situations and how he plays with his teammates and what he produces

so until Young actually plays in one game lets stop with the declarations

The problem was their entire offense went through 2 forwards last year with mo bamba and this big ass white dude, forget his name. And then Shaka had his 2 go-to guards and young was not one of them. I think he's going to be a good player for us. I don't think he'll be our best guard but I think he's going to be a really solid contributor and a plus player on both ends of the floor.

well, my observations were based on what he did on the court, in FULL games. Not just highlights. I'd recommend going back and watching some Texas full-game tapes from last year. Really allows you to see the good, bad and ugly. There's not a ton of ugly in young's game except for his propensity to rush threes once in a while. The fact that he's an absolute lockdown defender plus a play maker makes him very valuable

Going to be very interesting to see how Pike allocates guard minutes next season
IMO we're gonna go small a ton, kind of like we ended the Illinois game. We have too much backcourt talent not to. I can see Harper getting minutes at the 3 and the 4 when we go small. Here's my breakdown on how I see the minutes breaking down on average.

Geo- 26
Young- 25
Mulcahy- 18
Montez- 24
Caleb- 21
Harper- 22
Eugene- 28
Shaq C- 16
Myles J- 20

There's no need to have a rotation of more than 9 guys. Kiss and Issa really don't belong on the court when we have guys like the above mentioned. And then that ship we have to fill I would use on a legit sit out 4-man. If duke transfers then we have another ship we can use on a legit sitout guy. We have a pretty deep QUALITY lineup next year

Why.

Young will be our best player next year.

I sure hope not. That would mean we have a slew of players transferring out.

I remember when Nigel Johnson was the second-coming during his sit-out year also.

This is s good breakdown of minutes next year. Obviously pike is going to play the guys with the hot hand more at any given time but think this is where it ends up unless one guy shows more improvement.

We're gonna have a very balanced team next year. I think we're gonna have the type of team where every single night you'll have no idea who our best player will be because we'll have some many capable guys. We're gonna have just a very very very solid team. I think end of game, Geo will still be the go to guy but god damn we have such a solid team next year with so many scoring options. I said a couple weeks ago that it might not show % wise at the moment but Caleb's 3 ball is smoooooooth and he can be a sniper. He's shooting 64% from 3 in his last 3 big ten games now. When you have a guy like that, who can come off the bench and not only snipe but drive past guys when they close out too hard, it becomes a big problem for other teams. Next year is very exciting.

WAY WAY WAY too early to assume Kiss is out of the rotation and Young, Caleb, Harper and Mulcahy are in.

Right now Caleb is cookie dough ice cream and Peter Kiss is rum raisin (which I happen to like). I just can't believe that pikiell and company would miss that bad on Kiss and somewhere between now and when the season starts next year Kiss will figure it out.

He still didn't get to the line in the minutes he was in the game. Last year, he averaged just 1.7 FT attempts per 40 minutes, up from 1.0 as a freshman. By contrast, Mathis gets to the line for 6.1 attempts per 40 min, McConnell 4.3, and Baker 3.4.

If you averaged out his minutes to 25/game, his average game over his sophomore year at Texas would have been: 25 min, 9.3 pt (2.0-3.9 2P, 1.5-4.6 3P, 0.7-1.1 FT), 2.5 rb, 1.1 ast, 0.9 tov, 1.0 stl

54% of his shots came from behind the arc, which is more than Baker/McConnell and just a touch behind Kiss, and he was a .323 shooter. Overall, his sophomore season at Texas is fairly close to Kiss' RS soph season this year, but with a bit more minutes per game.

Really hoping this RS year has helped him improve rebounding, looking for assists, and getting to the line. I'm not ready to annoint him with 25+ minutes yet until I've seen him play. People were talking about Kiss getting the same last year, and he's seeing half that.

If he can defend that would give Pikiell an option of Mathis, Young, Eugene, Myles and 1 more that would give him a team that could defend.

Andre is your center...except he did play in a NCAA tournament game for RU....so maybe that is disqualifying

At this point it's actually the only logical thing to conclude. The season is almost over. Sure Kiss could come back a better player next season and earn a spot but at this point you have to assume the players mentioned would be above him in the rotation. Why wouldn't they be?
