Jarrod Hewitt decommits

------
I think we would have fewer verbals and signing early from the great players who will be more cautious..... Maybe the Ohio states will get the early signees, tougher here ....

You would also have some buyers remorse, recruits asking to be released somehow.... The early signing period would be great for a kid who gets his dream school...... Some players blow up and get big time interest late, those recruits would not be happy later on if they signed too soon... They would have to be very careful.

I'm of the opinion that an early signing period would hurt a school like Ohio State.

Usually, a school like Ohio State would "Round Out" their recruiting near February by looking at how many final recruits they could take and then go after one of the "higher rated" recruits at a school such as Rutgers or Pitt to decommit. If you lock them in December, its over.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

RU has so many natural advantages but lack the leader with vision...its happened at the ''U'' Wisky, Oregon and even smaller privates like TCU and Baylor...none have even half the advantages we have....but I've been a fan of RU since i was 12..now I'll be 64 in Nov and wonder if I'll see our rise.....''76'' was my greatest year as a fan...what ever happened to Jacque LaPrairie I wonder...
I've been a fan since '00. I have a sick feeling we will be in spot when I am 64, in 26 yrs.

I don't think recruits should be held to a higher standard than coaches. As I see it, coaches walk away from signed contracts often. So an 18 year old changes his mind -- fine, it goes on with ALL programs.

Recruiting is messy - and will remain messy.

As long as a team is totally free to call up a verbal recruit 2-3-4 days before national signing day and say
"uh ... things have changed ... we are not going to be able to provide that scholarship that we promised you ...how would you like to be a walk-on?" many recruits are justifyably going to be inclined to be open to reconsideration.

A verbal commit / verbal offer - is not legally binding - however some kids & some teams have a strong sense of commitment & feel duty bound to honor the agreement - regardless of changes in circumstances.... while others focus on the fact that it "is not binding" and that there is nothing legally obligating them to honor a non-binding agreement.

This is a bit like college admissions - and unless they create something like "Early Decision" for recruiting where it is a binding contract on both sides - it is not going to change.

But but but...."the entire recruiting class is 100% committed and tweeted that they are 100% behind Flood"

oh well..."I guess he isn't a Rutgers Man"
Yes. He is not into home invasions, underage drinking, using fake ID'S, beating up people including women and he will never need a coach to beg a professor to change a grade. Dude was never a good fit.

And those contracts contain specific penalty clauses for early termination ("buyouts").

Good false equivalency.

Good to see not everyone is making excuses this time around. I figured we'd feel the effects of Floodgate and whatnot, in recruiting, after the Oct schedule comes into play, BUT...let's not go crazy just yet it's only 1 kid.

Biggest problem with decommits, as autumn moves along, is the more you have the less likely you are of replacing them with kids of the same quality/potential.

Definitely lost one of the better members of the class, however, with this one. Now let's see what a "hold" Flood really has on NYC.

If you have to ask that question you must be content...your already lost and don't even know if the word fan suits you. DL is the hardest position to find talent or replace....were not in a position like say even a PSU to replace ANYONE lost with someone better...were already searching nooks and crannies for our ''hidden gems''...now where...at the bottom of the Ocean....maybe you can convince someone to replace him....geesh its like our fans are content just to put anything on the field and pray.....some of our fans are like the staff...''Lost in Space''..
You didn't answer the question. You must work in govt.

Why do you come on this board and continue to prove you are the biggest Ahole around. If you have any family you must be a miserable f*%# to them.

Stop it already. This kid probably would probably have de committed even without Flood being suspended. He probably wanted a better showing against PSU. Recruits that committ to a program or institution don't decommit because of concerns about a coach being fired or leaving for another job.

we are not big enough or consistently good enough to recruit to the program - it is still about the coach. just like c.vivian recruits players to her, we need a coach that recruits players to him.

Football needs an early signing period that requires a recruit to honor their commitment.

Discussions started this year, maybe having it set in December. Some Conferences are on board with this. I know the ACC is for it. Don't know if the B1G is in favor of it.

It works for Basketball, why not football.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

I'm not sure an early signing period in December (vs February) makes a whole lot of difference. Really all that does is put schools who are switching coaches at a disadvantage, since coaches tend to be fired in December, and that doesn't give the new coach enough time to re-recruit kids prior to the December early signing period.

If you were to have an early signing period, it should be in late August. Just like for basketball, the early signing period should be pre-season.

Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake

Forget December, lock them up in the summer before the fall season starts. I don't see how two months changes anything except for the one or two commits that the bit-time schools are going after to fill their class.

Hate to lose a quality commit. Really hate the impression that it gives off about the program.

But as far as the recruiting process goes - as long it is this rather free-form market-bazaar kind of loosely structured agreement process - up until signing day, it is not realistic to castigate kids for changing their mind.

there are only be two types of situations where someone would sign in an early period. otherwise it is just stupid for a recruit to sign:

(1) you are a borderline recruit who can get recruited over or (2) it is your dream school and you have no reason to look around.

so under (1), borderline recruits with mac and d1aa offers will lock in rutgers, while those with other offers to p5 schools will be patient. and maybe under (2) we will get 1-2 guys who dreamed about rutgers - like a kevin malast or a ted field, but dream school is more for the michigans, texas, ohio states, alabamas of the world - where regardless of the coach, the school is still the school. we are not there yet.

early signing period will not fix anything.

Tell you the truth as soon as they decommit their marked dirty in my mind....unless their a ''Rashod Gary'' or near i don't want them....sorta like a girl in HS who did you're ''friend''...
Yeah, you're right. We should probably go down to the locker room and tell Kiy Hester to clear out his locker and go home.

I'm not him, but I honestly wouldn't be happy about the product that was fielded last weekend. The offense was afraid to win and left the defense out to dry.

What was the time of possession? The defense was not left out to dry.

Exactly. Kids committ to coaches and kids committ to institutions/program or some combination thereof. Ray committed to Greg and so did the kid that decommitted from RU (Mike Giacommi sp? from St. Peters who then went to BC) when Greg took Tampa job. A verbal decommit at this point with so many question marks with the coaching staff is not fully sold on something and looking at his options. Agree that RU is still not at point where you can point to championships and conference titles to get recruits but being a BIG school, top 100 academic institution, closeness to top financial/media capital in the world and a better than decent (not outstanding) fanbase is enough to draw quality recruits regardless of the coaching situation.

GO RU

It doesn't work that way in basketball.

Coaches can still come and go, but a player has to sit out a year if he wants to change schools.

And what would change other than fans wouldnt get their hopes dashed?

Kids would just commit earlier than now, decommitt earlier than now and sign earlier than now.

The best case for both coaches and kids is to go as late as possible. Get as much info as possible on the player's abilities, and the makeup of the coaching staff.

Actually, when interviewed after the SHTF w/the arrested players, Russo was quoted as saying that his commitment to RU is unchanged as long as Flood is the coach. Who knows how true that will turn out to be, but it was clear that he was committed to Flood at least as much as to RU.

What was the time of possession? The defense was not left out to dry.
If you define "left out to dry" solely by time of possession, you would be correct.

IMO time of possession is only a small part of it. The bigger piece was how efficient was the offense and what were the underlying factors that contributed to that efficiency number. By the looks of it, we weren't very efficient and I think the conservative game plan was the main cause (along with turnovers). A coach has limited control over turnovers compared to how much control they have over the game plan.

Again, if I'm a defensive recruit, I don't like the timid offense. Obviously it's fine if you disagree.

The offense gained over 500 yards and did not leave the defense any short fields.

Plus do you really think it was the Kansas game that caused him to decommit? He had been talking about visiting Va Tech for a while.

It's all about doing it the hard way and having the fire be hot or some nonsense. I'd think you'd think not having players is a good thing.

Pa: No, usually things like that are deep rooted. The lackluster game, emailgate/homeinvasiongate, & general lack of excitement were probably straws that broke the camel's back.

RE: the game plan - Since you are squeezing it out of me, a big part of my disappointment was the lack of Rettig. The fact that we did the conservative thing and kept Laviano in there in spite of his struggles even though the game was in hand against a cream puff just doesn't sit well with me. The fact that it took so long to get the game in hand against a cream puff is also alarming in and of itself.

Right before Hewitt committed he said something along the lines of "If I commit I will still take visits". Then after he committed he changed his tune and said all the right things. I don't trust these Florida kids. And the school he wanted to still be able to visit was VT.
