JETS fans - Geno Smith

Boomer Esiason hinting the altercation was over an unpaid (monetary) debt.

Could this be Geno's swan song with the Jets ? May be a blessing in disguise if he never suits up for the Green and White again.

Although the perp is definitely to blame, Geno must have said something pretty egregious to get sucker punched like that. Not exactly showing leadership at the QB position.
Really? The coach has already said it was something that sixth graders even should have moved beyond. His quote. "It was beyond silly."

How well Gino played as a qb is not a point - the Jets drafted him (should have waited one year, Gino would have been better off getting drafted later by a team who could let him develop for several years, serve as a back-up). Boomer always spoke about how unbelievably tough it is to play qb in the NFL. What could he have said that would make a man clock him in the face? "Hey, your an a$$hole (well, then he proved that he is). To his own team mate. He is a human being; who punches a man in the face (unless in self defense).

It's "Geno".

And Boomer Esiason is a tool. I mean, who seriously wants to go through life encouraging people to call him "Boomer".

In a locker room.

Every conversation I ever had with Esiason (and there were several) left me thinking, "Here's a guy who needs to get punched in the face."

Are you suggesting that there is something you could say that would make it ok for someone to sucker punch you? How about taking it outside for a fair fight if you are that offended. I have known guys like that in HS who, for reasons no one understood at the time, would sucker punch guys left and right. And I ASSURE you, there was no good reason to do so. Some guys have anger issues, and the second they get pissed, they start swinging. Don't assume the Victim must have said something so Egregious it warranted a sucker punch.

What possibly could this Kentucky QB have said to deserve his ex-Teammate viciously and cowardly sucker punching him?

If my name were Norman, I might go with Boomer...

I think the bigger point is the obvious lack of juice Geno has in the room. For a 6th rounder to even contemplate knocking out the starting QB, you know Geno commands ZERO respect in that room. None.

Geno got no stain.

No I'm not suggesting that it could be OK to get sucker punched. I said that the perp was to blame. I'm just wondering what was said by Geno just before the punch. He obviously doesn't have respect from some of his teammates.

Don't forget that this happened in the Jets locker room with teammates present, a far cry from the setting in your video.

Say there might have been some back and forth on the practice field. You don't think a guy like Philip Rivers engages in stuff like that? Or Tom Brady? Just that they have teammates that know better than to pull a stunt like that with the team's QB. There's a reason why the perpetrator was cut right on the spot and isn't likely to ever wear an NFL uniform again.

You're not wrong and I'm not suggesting the dude who threw the bunch is innocent. By all means, he's the culprit here. But Geno clearly didn't have the respect in the locker room you need from a QB leader. Yeah Tom Brady and Philip Rivers engage in some back and forth, but no third stringer is gonna sucker punch them.

My gut tells me this is a blessing in disguise for the Jets. Maybe not this season, but if it helps them move on from Geno, it's better.

"When Enemkpali was 19, he punched a police officer during a bar fight before being subdued with pepper spray and a stun gun. Enemkpali was later charged with simple battery, placed on 13 months' probation, and ordered to complete 32 hours of community service and an anger-management course."

He looks like a juicer too.

Here he is next to Clowney

A lot of blaming the victim going on here. How is it obvious that Geno does not have the respect of his teammates? All that is obvious is that at one particular instance, Geno did not have the respect of one particular teammate who had a history of violence. Anything beyond that is mere speculation.

“Enemkpali purchased a plane ticket for Smith to attend his July 11 football camp at Pfugerville High School in Pfugerville, Texas. However, days before the camp, a person close to Smith was killed in a motorcycle accident in Miami and Smith did not attend Enemkpali’s camp, per sources,” Schefter wrote. “After Smith did not attend, Enemkpali demanded that the Jets’ quarterback refund him the $600 he allegedly used to purchase a plane ticket. Smith told Enemkpali he would reimburse him the money, but he did not.”

"In April of 2011 as a redshirt freshman at Louisiana Tech, was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace and battery of a police officer following an off-campus incident. Enemkpali was involved in a physical altercation at a Ruston steak house/bar and ultimately punched an off-duty, undercover police officer who was working security that morning at the drinking establishment. Police officers called to the scene first used pepper spray in an attempt to control an enraged Enemkpali and, after that failed, ultimately used a taser on the player.

Then-head coach Sonny Dykes, now the head coach at Cal, indefinitely suspended Enemkpali at the time of the incident, although he was reinstated and ended up playing in 12 games during the 2011 season. He went on to be an all-conference selection each of the next two seasons '

Again, I don't what Geno said or didn't say to this one individual. But suggesting he must have said something egregious enough to illicit this response is speculation as is the comment he doesn't have respect of some of his teammates.

Even if he doesn't, what does that have to do with someone sucker punching him? Nobody had any respect for Rich Kotite, but I don't remember anybody sucker punching him.

Couldn't this just be one individual, with a past history of violence, who went off the deep end?

Enemkpali was upset about being out $600, now he is out for millions. His NFL career is over.

I heard that Geno threw a punch, but Eli won another Superbowl MVP

By IK: "It was never my intention to harm anyone."

Is he serious? A person of your strength sucker punching someone and you never meant to harm anyone. This just perpetuates the absurd laughabillity (urban slang) of the whole mess.

NY Post is reporting that IK was giving Geno the silent treatment over the $ 600 debt since the Jets 7/29 reporting date. Also reporting that a shouting match between them ensued before the punch was thrown in the locker room. No way of knowing what either one said to the other but it looks like Geno was not offering an immediate cash settlement to IK before getting tapped out.

Interesting that Revis and Coach Bowles ( " It takes two to tango") are blaming both players for the incident, not just the perp. If Geno was truly the victim then why not back him instead of the sucker puncher ?

IK later released a statement apologizing for the incident and said that he never meant to hurt anyone. He threw a sucker punch that was never meant to hurt anyone ? How funny is that ?

What the hell. That is screwed up. I guess assault and battery pays in the NFL.
Players get picked up all the time for their info on their prior team. He will spill the beans to Rex as to which Jets have glass jaws

Rex probably said any player that takes down a Jet is a friend of mine. The Jets may as well have kept Enemkpali.

After winning meaningless games last year that cost the jets a chance for a franchise qb, and now this, I am really starting to hate Ryan!!!!!

There weren't any franchise worthy QB in the draft this past year. Besides, Ryan wasn't the problem. It was the Owner and a p*ss poor GM.

Just 2 stupid guys being themselves...,have to say if I was enemkpali I would have been enraged if what they are saying what geno did was true. Obviously still missing parts of the story, but what a POS geno is - not exactly a leader move on several levels by him.....in no way condoning what enemkpali did.....but I understand. Again 2 stupid guys being stupid.

Geno got what he deserved, and comes off as a douche big time. No way those players want to go to war with him.Loser from West Virginia,oh well.

“Geno put his finger in his face and told the guy, ‘Well, you’re not going to do anything about it.’

Guy deserved to get knocked out.

Just so I have this straight, and this is a yes or not question since you made it seem so black and white, you are saying Smith, who may have shown poor leadership in saying the quote here, deserved to be sucker punched and have is Jaw broken because of this?

If this is true, you would probably think there should be a lot of punches getting thrown in every day life. Heck everybody here has said something like this to someone else at some point, so Everybody should have had a broken jaw by now.

Its a good thing this board is mostly about anonymous internet muscles, because with the insults I have seen on here that were way worse than this, if posters were face to face, there would a lot of guys walking around with wired jaws.

Sorry, grown men do not deserve to have their jaw broken because they say something you don't like.

Maybe Geno deserved to be embarrassed, maybe IK should have told him he had no respect for him, maybe, maybe, he could have shoved him.

But sorry, what Geno said does not rise to the level of DESERVING a sucker punch broken jaw.

I was really saying this tongue and cheek, and agree the jets owner and the GM were a bigger problem than Rex, but I think Mariotta will be a top 10 franchise QB soon. My opinion, we'll see what happens.

Long ago, I've actually punched someone after saying something similar. Pretty incendiary thing to say to another man who is already irate with you. I was also punished, but damn it felt good. Also, not a sucker punch at that point.

First, when having a verbal confrontation with somebody, and you punch them without warning, or without the understanding you are going to settle your difference with a fair fight, that is a sucker punch.

Ok, I get it, when someone says something you don't like, you feel an urge to retaliate. And, in your example, you punched someone who said something to the effect that you "can't do anything about it". But let me ask you................

1. If you broke his jaw would you have felt "damned good" about it?

2. Did what he say deserve a broken jaw?

3. If he defended himself when you throw this first punch and broke your jaw, would you have deserved it?

4. If, after flooring this dude, would he be justified in retaliating with a punch when you didn't expect it?

I know this sounds like lecturing, sorry for that. I have had a person, who used to be my best friend, betray me, and do things to me that have cost me a lot in my life, serious things. Trust me I want to smash his face in, and for a few minutes I probably would feel good about it. So you can probably understand how I would feel seeing how people break each other's jaws over nothing.
