Jimmy V Classic

How does Illinois secure a spot in the Jimmy V classic but we can’t?

@RU72 I believe you’ve posted about the Jimmy V before.

What’s the reason we can’t get into this considering it’s at MSG and Jim Valvano is former letter winner and coach?

I like Pike but he’s always been afraid to play tough teams.

Yup, there’s the MSG opportunity we want. Can’t tell me Illinois is more appealing choice in NYC if tickets and attention is primary factor

Isn’t the real question “Why Florida Atlantic?”.
Clearly, FAU has passed Rutgers as a MBB program. #kidding

They were just in the final four and returned almost everyone from last season's team. FAU is also playing in the ESPN Events Invitational.

They are media darlings rn.

Definitely don't see RU playing 2nd or 3rd fiddle at MSG with UConn and UNC on the docket. Pass......

NJHawk that’s a cowardly take, ya must be from the Pike inner camp on scheduling. we Never become great unless we take a risk. Time for the program to strive for Top 25 perennial excellence and top NCAA tourney seeds… making the tourney as a 10+ seed should no longer be the goal.

I'm not a fan of the holiday tournament and the 10000 invitationals....they do absolutely nothing for me, they're not registering for me as a fan and I don't see the fascination with 98% of them.

The ones that matter (to me) are the Maui Classic and after that, maybe a Bahamas classic....the rest are just TV fillers and I have no interest in working my schedule to travel or see. If RU plays a game locally, whether Prudential, MSG, Barclay's or the UBS arena/Philly, I could make a day trip, but that's about it. There's literally at least 5 to 7 different November or December MSG CBB events every year and they all blend together to me.

If it's on a Saturday afternoon or night, wake me up when it happens, but the random Tuesday night, Thursday night doubleheader at 7PM and 940PM start on a weeknight.....not that interesting, I can watch 8 other games at home those same 2 nights.

And I'm not falling into to ridiculous OOC schedule trap that's a media creation. Win enough games over 33 to 34 schedule and show me the brackets. Not losing sleep over 400 holiday tournament games in November or December.

The Jimmy V is special and not just another tournament for Rutgers. You obviously were not a student or fan in 1967-68 who watched the best backcourt duo in Rutgers MBB history play at the Barn. After graduating, Jimmy V started his coaching career as coach of the Rutgers freshmen team.

Hawk used to be an an alpha on these boards. Now he’s a mere apologist. As far as I can tell he’s still a good dude but not nearly the same persona he once had.

I know his OOC scheduling hasn't been exciting but, in this instance, is RU not in this event because of Pike's scheduling or ESPN's lack of interest?

I actually don’t care that much about the schedule anymore. We will be acclimating a new PG who is transferring from the A-10 and relying on frosh and a sophomore in the backcourt. I have a feeling it might take time for things to come together.

It was actually the 1966 - 67 season, my freshman year on the Banks, and the year of RU's Bicentennial celebration. That team was among the most fun teams I've ever seen, with Lloyd and Valvano in the backcourt, as noted above. The NIT in March, 1967 was RU's first-ever post-season play. It was like RU's coming out party as Rutgers fans filled the (old) Garden several times. The NIT was still a big deal back then, as the NCAA took just 23 teams and the NIT just 14. It was, perhaps, the first real awakening of the "Sleeping Giant," as Rutgers has often been called. Those of us who were there will never forget it.

So yes, the Jimmy V Classic would be special for RU. Not every year, as that would make it less special, but perhaps once every 5 or 6 years to keep it a novelty.

The only guy in the roster right now playing 1-3 that has had any real minutes on the floor in a Rutgers uniform is Simpson. And he is a sophomore who only really started to figure it out towards the end of last year.

I agree that it's likely going to take some time.

I think they will figure it out this summer -- even if they have to go to Africa and back!

I do wish that more of these were actual tournaments and not just a few teams aying 1 game..but regardless, Rutgers needs to be in one soon

It's not a tournament anymore. Just a double header. It would be nice if RU was included in the rotation of teams due to its relationship with Jimmy V.

CBB has changed, I am adapting to its current state.....no one is apologizing for anything, I'm just not a sheep following people who will tell you anything....and I know who Jimmy V is and I clearly stated I would not play in this year's Jimmy V, vs FIU, while UNC and UConn headline the event

If we play it next year as the feature program, then maybe I'll consider it and view it differently from the countless other tournaments that don't move me at all. Some fans are still stuck in the mindset that RU has to take the 1st available offer and be grateful for it.....this is not RU of 10 20 or 30+ years ago.....RU warrants consideration as the lead program and first offer for Jimmy V, not 3rd or 4th.

How about we actually participate in a holiday tournament and then we can determine if it is worth it.

It is also about building a brand. Can’t solely do it within the B1G.
You build a brand by winning, it’s really as simple as that. After decades in the f’n basketball wilderness, we’ve made remarkable progress. When the time is right, we’ll be in the Jimmy V Classic with a real opportunity to continue to build our brand.
