I watched his video, wow. He will probably be the starter at some point next year.

QB position is scarily thin with Dare, Laviano, and Rettig transferring. We may be in need of some graduate transfers of our own. Also need to sign another QB in this class.

Thin? This year's starter is returning. Plus Oden, Allen, and Lewis. As SS said they were probably all above the three that left on the depth chart anyway.

Rettig loss and Laviano kinda hurt.... Dare was the nail in the coffen... we need some depth BADLY

LOL, wut? Those guys were never going to play again here anyway. So it doesn't matter if they are gone or not.
How do we know that. Maybe one of the would have impressed on the scout team during the week and gotten thrown into a game and became starter. Sounds crazy I know with all of the evaluation that goes on by skilled coaches.

Imo the bigger concern on QB depth is Oden. The unwillingness of coaching staff to let him throw was a red flag imo.

Now I like Gio, I think he could be a good QB. And I really like Lewis, but he will only be a freshman. And Allen, well, let's just say I'm not ecstatic about QB depth either.

Does matter. You need depth and experience at the position.
Pretty soon we will have our starting QB taking the snaps on FGs and Extra Points. lol

i think the staff is treating Oden like Jabu... run only... i think it is dumb as hell... we HAVE to see the kid throw the damn ball

Just because you have bodies doesn't mean you have depth.

With a more experienced Gio, a more physically developed Oden, Jon "baby Cam" Lewis, and a potential grad transfer (this will be good if it happens), our QB situation for 2017 would be far from being thin. In fact it is probably the best it has ever been at Rutgers. Also, fingers crossed on 2018 QBs - hint hint.

We are trending UP in a big way and the QB situation reflects it. But yeah, go ahead. Haters can keep on hating.

It's not a great situation, but I feel we will have more QB's that can actually function in the new offensive system. Would be nice if Lewis is able to come in early, not sure if St. Peters Prep allows that or if he even wants to. Having all of our QB's at Spring ball would be a huge plus. Oden will be much improved next year having seen the field this year.

Zaire would be on my Christmas wish list.

Agree, if he was playing in order to develop him, well I think they did a lousy job.

I would have really liked to see him and gio in the game at the same time. Gio being the QB.

And the more Oden was in games, while not throwing the ball, the more I thought that.

Factor in Lewis? Even more so.

I touched on this in previous post, but will he be? It's clear he's comfortable running the ball. That was clear way early in the season. But if we want our QB to throw it? I don't see how his playing time this year will help him much in that regard. I felt this year was a wasted year in terms of developing Oden.

you have a very solid point about Gio and Tylin being in the game at the same time..... reminds me of Rice/Lenard.... no one knows who gets the ball... defenses can't be ready for anything

As far as Lewis as starting QB next year.

On the one hand I hope Gio can build off this year, claim the spot, and win enough games to hold off a true freshman QB.

On the other hand, if Lewis is THAT good, then by all means.

Really hoping we don't see Lewis in there because the season tail spinned again. Or see him play one series a game while rarely throwing the ball in order to get his feet wet.

GIO won't be beat out by anyone on the roster or coming in for the foreseeable future
I would like to agree.

I thought Gio, despite the blah #'s and even worse w-l record, showed some real promise this year. In terms or running, in terms of throwing, throwing on the run. Throwing in bad weather. Driving for the FG in the 4th vs Minny. The would be TD to Patton late vs Indy....

Get him a full spring and summer, some weapons like Mitchel and Melton, hopefully the return of Grant in addition to Harris, a TE would be nice, I think we could see a vastly different offense next year

The staff has made it obvious that they expect gio, Lewis and oden to be the immediate future. I don't know why anyone is expressing concern over the transfers.
Well Lewis will be a true frosh, and Oden, currently a true frosh, has not shown he can/was not allowed to, throw the ball.

Depth at position is a legit concern.

Truthfully, Laviano would have been a serviceable backup.

Why do "we" have to see him throw? I mean, the coaches see him throw all the time. Why does it matter what the fans see? Guess I'm not understanding your point here.

If you mean you think he should've been in on more passing downs in games this past season, the coaching staff made it abundantly clear he's just not ready to do that yet. The few passes I did see appeared to back up what the staff has said.

What information do you have that the coaching staff is mistaken about that?

He got much more time in practice running the Rutgers offense than he would have if he redshirted. He also should have a better idea on where he needs to improve.

It seems like Jonathan Lewis already runs a power spread type offense at SPP so this transition won't be too difficult.

Truthfully, Laviano clearly does not want to spent his final year of eligibility serving as a potentially "serviceable backup" - with the knowledge that if the starter stays healthy - he never sees the field ... and if the starter builds a huge lead - the next guy in will be a younger player needing game experience.

Didn't sound like he got much time with the 1's.

Was he practicing much with the 2nd unit?

I'm wondering if the reluctance to let Oden throw was partially due to his lack of body mass. The guy's a twig - and our OLine hasn't really shown it can protect a QB from taking a set of shoulder pads to the ribs. We all knew when Oden signed that he'd need to put on 20-30 lbs to be effective - I wonder if they were (in part) trying to keep him healthy to make sure his development wasn't set back.

Sure I can see his pov for wanting to transfer, I was talking from RU's pov.

Please tell me / us why these transfers of Laviano ( who most were convinced should NEVER see the field again)...Dare who I don't remember ever taking a live snap....and Hayden Rettig who admittedly understands where he fit in the equation hurts us ?...depth is an issue all along the O & D lines ...at wide receiver / TE's and Linebacker...we will have Gio , Oden, Lewis and I believe Zach Allen who if he wishes can return...and you could possibly see another 5th year transfer....
