Johnathan Lewis

Best case scenario here is that gio locks down this job and performs well enough the next two years . Then it's Lewis job for 2-3 years and he's ready to go.

I'll be surprised if Lewis isn't starting by the 2nd game. He's clearly got more skills and athleticism, so as long as he can pick up the basics of the offense, I think he'll play. But you do need multiple guys in this offense, as it's easy to get a running QB dinged up. And Gio showed promise, at times, which is a good thing, and Oden also has skills, and maybe they'll actually let him throw next year.

I doubt Allen plays and Laviano and Rettig weren't going to see the field, anyway, so with them gone (and given the question marks we have and the potential for injury), I wouldn't be surprised to see us try the Juco/grad transfer route to get another QB.

Then why play him at all?

Why burn the RS?

Again, as I said earlier, it may have been due to desperation in trying to find something at the QB position.

But the lack of confidence in Oden's throwing ability does lead me to question his ability at the position. Which does lead me to this question.

Is Oden still a QB as he enters his Jr year? Or do we try to take advantage of his running ability in other ways, most likely at WR?

Personally, given what I saw from Gio, and the hopes I have for Lewis, combined with coach's unwillingness to let Oden throw, I would have already begun that transition.
As I mentioned before, in hindsight we probably shouldn't have played him. It has some benefit we can see; any game experience is better than none. But that's limited value.

What we cannot see, though, is what other factors went into the decision. And as another poster mentioned, they might have thought/hoped that he'd have improved in the passing game faster than he did.

I doubt Ash burned his red shirt lightly. And coaches aren't future-tellers. They have to make best guesses and balance such guesses against the priority of needing to fix the QB play now vs. later. Didn't work out, but that's a pretty hard thing to know with certainty until you try. If they didn't try, fans would've killed the staff for that.

I think it's still early days to give up on Oden at QB. But who knows. We'll find out eventually. He wouldn't be the first QB not to make the transition from HS to college at the position.

Yeah really? I'm doubtful, but if he's that good then I'm for it.

What were his #'s on the year? Some of the individual game stats I saw were much more run heavy. Now that could be merely a practical matter in that teams could not stop him from running. But it would raise the question of his ability to throw. Especially against B1G defenses.

I expect heavy Gio next year. And if Gio looks like he is significantly better then Lewis. To the point where you would again expect Gio to start as a Senior. Do you burn Lewis's RS next year? Thus leaving him with 2 years after Gio graduates? Or do you try to get 3 years out of Lewis as a starter?

Of coarse looking down the road and potential recruiting classes, perhaps we don't need to wrap the next 5 years up in the Gio-Lewis QB era.

I will bet some hookers and blow he doesn't start by the second game, unless Gio or Oden is injured. Recruiting vids are notoriously unreliable predictors of future ability.

I agree. Lewis looks good in his highlight tape but who doesn't? Gio's Hudl looks amazing. I think if you give him adequate protection, he's shown he can make the routine pass and can make plays with his feet. Is he elite at either? Nope. But he can be a solid college QB if you surround him with good players. Of course that part of it is still pending.

This is Gio's Hudl BTW.

I think some here are seriously underestimating both Gio's ability AND the importance of both the experience he got this past season and which he will get this spring. Remember: he played injured from late in the 2nd quarter, vs Minny, until season's end (with a knee injury, as well, the last 2.5 games). I think we're gonna be pleasantly surprised come next September. Now how that translates, to yards and points, will depend on his new set of receivers and, more importantly, his OL.

LOL, wut? Those guys were never going to play again here anyway. So it doesn't matter if they are gone or not.
We haven't actually signed Lewis yet, much less know for sure whether he's ready to play or not as a freshman. We've only got Gio and Oden returning with any real game experience, except that Oden wasn't really allowed to throw. If, for some reason, Lewis isn't available and Gio goes down with an injury, we'll probably wish we still had Laviano, believe it or not.

I think it's ridiculous that people are writing him off after one year. Lets see how much muscle he can gain over the spring and summer? This is the type of kid that would probably be given time to develop until junior or senior year anywhere else

nobody is writing him off and you are saying exactly the point. Shouldn't in the plans for true frosh or true soph year. geez.

actually a really good point...(although I sense Lewis is rock solid given the circumstances)

never mind all that. Just tell me where you tailgate...

I agree with rubob, We can talk all we want about QB depth. Next years skill positions (especially if Grant returns) I think will be a significant upgrade over this year. QB experience in the system (Gio), Lewis as a freshman (he looks to be the real deal), Melton and Mitchel at WR, rb is solid. We will not improve a lick unless there is significant improvement up front on both sides of the ball. If by some miracle we get a genuine BIG o-line and d-line then, and only then, will we see a BIG difference.

Lewis will get snaps next year and Tylin will end up at WR by 2018 IMO (the latter would be my bold prediction).

I understand the "don't pass over him yet" crowd; I really do - except, the coaches wouldn't even let him throw the ball. The quarterback! Wouldn't let him throw!

Ash is hitching his wagon to Lewis there's no doubt. No way he sits him for two years.

BTW- could some of you start getting names correct? Maybe I get that you could mis an R in Carroo but if someone has 4 fracking letters in their name...

Rutgers is front page news again .... because people are making fun of us for having 3 quarterbacks transfer in 3 days.

I think we most likely land Lewis. But we've all seen before how things can fall apart in recruiting. Seems like both the program and this messageboard would be in for a world of hurt if he doesn't sign.

I'm wondering if the reluctance to let Oden throw was partially due to his lack of body mass. The guy's a twig - and our OLine hasn't really shown it can protect a QB from taking a set of shoulder pads to the ribs. We all knew when Oden signed that he'd need to put on 20-30 lbs to be effective - I wonder if they were (in part) trying to keep him healthy to make sure his development wasn't set back.
But we let him run and go head on with a LB? I respectfully disagree with this.

Where exactly? Anybody who is laughing at that is a moron.

Regarding the QB situation here, do really good QBs want to come here or do they want to commit more to the bigger names like OSU, UM, USC, Alabama, etc.? I would think that a really good QB would go where there is a need and more likely to get playing time compared to being third or fourth on the depth chart.

This thread is disgusting and stupid. A thread about our most prized recruit devolves into a debate on something that should be on the CE board. Can you guys restrain yourselves and start a new thread. SMH.
Trying to get this thread back on track - Lewis plays tonight at MetLife against Paramus Catholic. I believe the game starts at 8:00pm. Does anyone know if it will be streamed on-line?

I watched his video, wow. He will probably be the starter at some point next year.

Now that's how you run "our" kind of offense. A perfect example of a dual threat QB made for Mehringer's system.

His dad is on staff now for PC
