Credit to Good'Ol for putting this list of pre-Jan 1st bowl games (see: teams which we COULD have "realistic" expectations of poaching an OC from). Felt it got lost in another thread so started a new one. Ash said he expects to name a new OC by the end of the month, so, have at it my friends!

That's a bit odd, isn't it?

Unless his targets have bowl games before the end of December. Maybe he has an agreement that cannot be announced until the bowl game is played. If true, that means it is not a FCS target.

So.. is it one of these 56 teams who all play before Dec 30?

Any obvious candidates stand out from the list? Would be nice to try to catch the games of the the top candidates.

Very, very doubtful RU will get a current OC from a Power 5 team.

I'd say we likely couldn't steal and OC from MOST of those P5 schools, however, stranger things have happened. It's not easy - at all - let alone as some here would like to make you think it could be. That being said there are 35 teams playing in the bowls, listed above, that aren't P5 schools.

Lots of potential guesses - but there are some teams that are obviously going to be shuffling staff - would not expect those guys to be totally prohibited from letting the word out if they were making a move - for example anybody on the current staff at WKU, Temple, Houston, Indiana & USF - maybe some places have leverage on the staff ( some sort of retention bonus?) but if you were on the staff of the departing HC - you are either going with him - or you are shopping - unless you have been given some deal you just can't refuse

I think some will want to know more about the plans of the OC at Toledo - while others will be watching Idaho & Petrino - and also - who will have seats when the music stops in Indiana / moreover - who still wants those seats?

Oh - just looked at Navy - does anybody know of any feelers being put out to Ivin Jasper? is in his 17th year at the Naval Academy, his 15th as the quarterbacks coach and his ninth as the offensive coordinator. Sure seems to know how to compete even when given a bunch of really good but "generic" athletes.

Thanks for the props OP... here are the top 30 in total offense.. So I went through my list of bowl games before the 30th and looked for these teams. Hopefully, our next OC might be in one of these games because we looked for an OC of a top offense.

Its only 12 games.... 14 teams.. if we are getting a Top 30 offense OC.

1 Texas Tech 564.5
2 Louisville 558.8
3 Oklahoma 557.3

Sooo.. let's assume we get lucky in this way of thinking and the deal is already done, waiting to be announced after a bowl game. And that we went for a top 30 Offense OC.. whihc of these 14 teams has an OC in the right circumstances that he might welcome a move to Rutgers...

So.. have at it.. any names here jump out at you?

Can we get Kendall Briles? Would we want him? Do you think his dad did his "homework" as OC? Or, maybe Dad was a great mentor.

4 Toledo 529.8 Appalachian State vs. Toledo 12/17 5:30 pm

Assistant Coach (Offensive Coordinator/Fullbacks-Tight Ends) Joe Wickline (I assume Horgelson calls the plays)

15 Washington St. 497.6 Minnesota vs. Washington State 12/27 7pm
Anyone know who at WSU might be an OC in waiting? Assume Leach controls it all)

Gee.. I would have expected a bit more speculation by now. You can click the names above to read their bios.

It is really hard to speculate on assistant coaches moving on as an assistant coach, especially at the same job. Assistants rarely have the buzz of activity around them the way an HC does. Thus, it is hard to know who might be on the way out in there current situation. Also, really well known assistants get buzz when there is an HC job opening, not a horizontal move. There may be names many of us would like to get on the list but I don't think any of us really know their situations well enough to speculate about a willingness on their part to make a move.

Well.. if we are after a good OC from a team that showed a strong offense.. said OC might be a head coach candidate somewhere... or several places. That would likely eliminate him as an OC for Rutgers. This is the main reason I figured we'd be looking at FCS OCs.

But with Ash's comment about candidates being in bowl games.. and wanting to name someone by the end of December.... I figured that meant someone was already chosen but they have to work out the deal.. and give him time to finish his commitment to his current squad.

So, when you start listing the criteria and conditions and start crossing off names... we should be able to narrow the list.. unless, of course, this whole "bowl game" thing was a slip-up.. maybe FCS playoffs get lopped in with bowl games to Ash's way of thinking.. all post-season games.

Would be interesting if it is one of those listed above.

All I know is I want a PROVEN successful OC. Not another guy learning as a first timer.

We need to define what proven means for everybody...is 10 years at a high FCS proven enough?

And not asking just you, @B0ski. Asking for all of us in general.

Don't know how long it takes to achieve consummate proficiency - probably varies from person to person - some guys 3-4-5 years - some guys - never.

In my mind - it is not my criteria that needs to be satisfied - it up to Ash - because it is his body of work that will be shaped by the competence & contribution of this critical position.

But if I were Ash - I would be looking for somebody who dreams "Coordination of Offense" , who obviously speaks it fluently -and because he is so attuned to all of the nuances of the power spread (and coordinating offenses in general), he already has several "how-to" versions of 'constructing & executing power spread' outlined in side of his head - can instantly diagnose flaws, needs for refinement - long before they would become obvious to someone who is in the formative stages of learning their craft. - and is a magical MacGyver - who is able to look at an assortment of players with various talents & and can all season, week after week ,cobble together solutions that manage to prevail against the opponent.

Thank you for all the work that you put into this.Surely one of these guys would do a very fine job here.

Interesting.. in another thread they are saying Brian Knight.. the guy at the top of the list in this thread.. (top FBS offense playing a bowl game before Dec 20.. Toledo) is a top candidate.

This game has become must-viewing.

4 Toledo 529.8 Appalachian State vs. Toledo 12/17 5:30 pm
Brian Wright Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach

I'd assume if Mr. Knight.. I mean Wright.. could turn the Scarlet Knight offense around quickly, he be a hot candidate for head coach somewhere. So I hope we pick up an OC-in-training as well.. someone with good Jersey or Rutgers ties who might want to learn from Wright and then takeover should he be incredibly successful and look to move up.

Sorry, I don't like his tie. No red in it. Pass.

Very, very doubtful RU will get a current OC from a Power 5 team.
Maybe a co- OC ( example TCU with Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie ) that wants to strike out on their own.
Both the ones I used as an example might be to expensive , but there might be one out there that does and be withing Rutgers price range.
That said, you're probably right about not being a destination for any P-5 OC the way Rutgers looks and pays.

.. you're probably right about not being a destination for any P-5 OC the way Rutgers looks and pays.

Its not even that.. successful OCs at the P5 level.. especially if they are young.. their next stop is a head coaching job or OC for a traditional power who can open up the vault... and give them big name program/head coach credentials.

This is why I figured the smart play was to look at FCS and/or non-P5. Since Ash mentioned bowl games for some candidates, I figured that mean his main targets were in bowl game(s). If his main targets were not in bowl games.. that would have mean the FCS playoffs... and he might have mentioned "playoffs" as well.

The Navy guy would be a definite fit for RU. Now coaches qbs that don't throw a lot and could be coaching guys that can't throw a lot.
Not sure if it qualifies as a lateral move.
