Lineup potential shifts. Wolf at 4

It's not everyone. I expect Mag will be ready for November. Losing an entire summer of shooting, footwork and playing will be more of a hindrance than any kind of reduced athleticism from the knee for him this season.
Yea, if not to start the season, Mag should be back in December. Instead of people using recent examples like quinnerly, many are using outdated recovery timetables

Unless we hear Mag had a set back or had a much worse injury than initially reported with multiple ligament tears, he should be back in '23

I hope so but until we see him play there is no reason to believe that, he has done nothing at this point.
True, but its also true that usually someone develops. Look at 2 seasons ago compared to last season. In my opinion Mag took a big step forward from his sophmore year to his junior year. Conversely, Miller showed promise (at least defensively) in his freshman year but didn't seem to make any progress as a sophmore. Mag went from 12 minutes per game to 25 minutes per game, 3 ppg to 8 ppg, etc. in a year. There were positive reports in preseason camp, but I don't anyone knew that was coming when the 2021-22 season ended. Yeah, there's no guarantee that Chol or Woolfolk make that jump, but there not no reason to believe that. The goal is to develop players and there is evidence that the staff is able to do that, at least with some players.

Mag went from 11.7 min to 24.8 min because Ron Harper Jr's minutes were up for grabs. Hyatt went from 12.8 to 23.1, too.

I feel a lot more confident about Wolf at this point, he played some meaningful minutes and showed a fair amount of promise along with some rough edges. Chol hasn’t shown us anything yet, looked like he didn’t belong once the season started. I hope he has a jump, but until he shows something I don’t see how anyone can count him to do anything yet.

Kind of like Myles showed us nothing in his redshirt year??
Myles was overweight and out of shape, we didn’t even see him. When we finally did he looked like a player. Chol didn’t look like a player last year. I am sure he will improve, but until I see that he can contribute, I wouldn’t count on him.

I agree with you. I expect nothing at all from Chol and I hope I’m wrong.

I’m not sure about chol to be honest.

I'm saying that we really don't know. It's not reasonable to have expectations regarding what he will do. Neither is it reasonable to expect that he is not going to contribute significantly.

I am not saying he won’t, I am just saying I won’t expect him to until I see some evidence he can play at this level.

Don't know if I want Mag banging with the big guys, he is listed as 6-7 216 and injury prone, hope we get a big body 4 in the portal, with two inches and 20 lbs on Mag.
Mag started most of last season at the 4. Hyatt also started several games at the 4 as well and he’s 6’6” 220. The last few games of the year we were starting four guards and Cliff.

Almost no one plays a big guy at the 4 anymore.

This lineup but I believe Hyatt will start at 4. Maybe chol surprises as well if gg has trouble with defense early in the season..
Also believe an experienced 2 guard and back up big will be brought in..
Agree Hyatt starts. Said previously when more depth expected, and still now say that Chol won’t play much. Didn’t show any potential in limited action. Also a weak offer list.

Time will tell who’s right but I’m not seeing it.

Yeah idk anything...I tend to look at unknowns and think positively about the outcome. But I think he was actually supposed to be a senior in highschool as opposed to on a college basketball team. He reclassified from 2023 and came a year early if I'm not mistaken.

The offer list isn't too relevant since he reclassified late and committed to us. With his size, length, and 3 point shooting, he would have gotten more offers if he stayed in class of '23

In the 19 total minutes Chol played last year you saw enough to say he has no potential?

Eh I don’t know. I think it’s reasonable to default to a slightly upgraded version of what we saw last season albeit a limited data set. It’s not close to 50 / 50 that a kid who failed to impress and redshirted will come in and make major noise.

What your suggesting would be kind of like saying there’s a 50/50 chance everything will just click over the summer for a kid who struggled with reading all year and gets summer tutoring and suddenly become a good reading student. It could happen for sure, but that’s the less likely outcome.

Not no potential - just not that likely he’ll go from where he was on the depth chart to contributing significant meaningful minutes. Could happen - but not likely.

You have your priors weighted incorrectly. There are three important bits of input here.

One is what he looked like last year.

Second is that he reclassified a year early, so being a fish out of water is appropriate.

Third is he was selected by our coaching staff to come as a 5 year developmental player. So they have seen something about his upside and development to make them think he will contribute.

Putting that together brings it much closer to a 50-50 (maybe 30-70) than the scenario that you suggest.

Peace out

I’m confused. He was brought in as a project burning a schollie we otherwise weren’t going to use. There was no downside as it’s always good to have a practice body. It was always a long shot that he’d become an impact player though (wasn’t close to 50 / 50 when he signed).

What new information moves the needle forward rather than status quo of where he started?

"Hasn't shown anything "

😆😆😆, You repeat the same line about football players who have not played or only got a few snaps as a true freshmen.

Have to see who we bring in that can play the 4 from the portal bc that will increase or decrease the odds of Chol having a significant impact next season. The better the portal player is, the lower Chol's chances will be. If we bring in Agee level 4 then Chol has a real shot and good chance we will need him to play some minutes early in the season at least

My impression was that he was brought in as more than a practice body, but as someone the staff had good hopes for. If that is not correct, then I'm mistaken.

Apologies if it was mentioned already … but I can see Pikiell toying with a 3-2 matchup zone D. Put Gavin up top with Simpson and Fernandes on the wings and two bigs down low.

Correct. Just my opinion but based on 45 plus years of following college basketball. He’s a raw project and will not ever contribute much here, IMO.

Further, the ‘he reclassified’ excuse for a very weak offer list doesn’t hold water because if we knew about him and so did a few low-majors, so did everyone else. If he showed real promise, plenty of high major teams would have found a spot for him just like the other few did.

I would be very surprised if he plays anything more than garbage minutes, even with the depth concerns.

He also came in late, where most freshman come in by July, he did not get here until the beginning of September. Which put him even further behind.

I’m interested in seeing how he does in the summer tour.

Never seen so many experts obsessing over a RS freshmen and the 13th player on the roster from last year. We will see how he develops over the summer and into the fall, on the court and in the weight room.

Love that idea - I hope Pike watched the Heat defense in the NBA playoffs.

I don’t see it as obsessing, and he is not the 13th man on the roster. We only have 10 at this point, and he could fill a need at the 4 spot, with Mag coming off an injury and Hyatt being inconsistent.

Here’s what I think COULD happen.

I truly think Wolf is a 4. It’s his natural position. He has shown handle, touch, toughness and defense, all of the things you need.

Let’s face it. Baring injury, Cliff is barely leaving the floor this year. IF we get a SERVICEABLE CENTER BACKUP, I see Wolf moving over to 4 PRIMARILY. 5 if needed at times.

JMike shows great versatility and can play both guard spots. He will fill in BOTH positions.

Gavin at the 3. Will be a matchup nightmare for many. Plus he can handle. Can’t see him banging inside much, but can see him slashing and rebounding.

Leaving Mag OUT of starting for now, it’s gonna be a process. Jan or Feb is optimistic.

So here’s what I see as our best lineup GAME 1. When Mag comes back, even better.

Point: Noah, (JMike)
2: Simpson (JMike /portal)
3: Gavin (Hyatt/Mag)
4: Wolf (Hyatt/Chol)
5: Cliff (Portal)

We need some decent, experienced depth players in portal at center and guard now to give us 8 minutes or so a game. I trust Pike and staff are on it.

I think this is close to what we will see, but with Chol as a three in very limited action. He is not an inside player.
