Maryland hot board

I don't think Chip Kelly is getting fired from Philly so to me it's somewhat moot. But out of the 3 college locations (USC/Texas (don't think Strong is going anywhere anyhow)/Maryland) tied to him I could make the case that Maryland is the more likely landing spot. You may say what are you crazy but knowing what we know about Kelly I don't think it's so outlandish.

We know that Kelly hates to schmooze and glad hand right. I'd say being able to schmooze all the USC boosters and that whole "hollywood" thing is a big part of the job. Right behind them I'd say schmoozing the Texas billionaires is right up there. At Maryland like everyone there are boosters but there's just one booster you have to schmooze and we know who that is and we know that guy is willing to spend money on Maryland football. So knowing his personality I could make a case that Maryland is the more likely landing spot of the two because his glad handing/schmoozing responsibility would probably be much less than the other 2 spots. It's also closer to his roots in the northeast.

It's like when I mention you never know for sure what's in a guy's head and the most logical choice for the general public isn't always for a particular person. Look at Mike Leach. He coached at Lubbock, Texas and now Pullman, WA two out of the way, generally out of the limelight places. It suits his personality and makes sense if you look at that. Or even Andersen leaving Wisconsin to Oregon State, who the heck would have thought that. So looking at Chip Kelly's personality I'd say out of the 3, Maryland would be the more logical landing spot over the other 2.

Mind you like I said I think it's all moot because I don't think Philly will fire him so soon after giving control to him. But if you look a little deeper beyond just dollar signs and status, I don't think it's so outlandish.

They get one big donor up there and suddenly they think they are PSU. My guess is Chip Kelly isnt at MD. Maybe Herman or Campbell - but those are mid-level guys. They arent the kind of guy PSU or OSU would hire unless they got turned down by alot of other guys. Frank Reich too.

So basically its - well we arent taken proven P5 coaches - we are getting Chip Kelly. Yeah right. If Chip Kelly leaves the pros its not gonna be for MD no matter how much money you THINK Planck has. Because some other school will match it AND provide an easier path to a title.

Maybe Dan Mullen if he thinks he cant do any better at MSU and is likely to get fired soon, and therefore can get a bigger contract with MD and more job security. But that would basically be taking a retread. The guy isnt leaving a successful SEC program to go rebuild MD. If he leaves, expect MSU to fall off almost immediately, not because Mullen left, but because tings were bad enough that he left before it showed.

Be realistic - you - like most schools that arent playing in 100,000 seat stadiums are getting a retread or an assistant or a G5 HC, not a proven championship level coach.

I think most Maryland fans understand that we aren't Bama or Michigan or USC. Even the President Loh acknowledged that during his interview with The Sun's editorial board. Maryland isn't going for that. The Terps are very interested in leveraging its Under Armour flagship status (and the increased "cool" factor of UA with recruits), Kevin Plank's direct interest and increased wealth, Big Ten membership, and planned facilities to work to become a contemporary power a la Oregon. And to be clear, Maryland is fortunate to have a few top donors who were energized by the B1G and the new facility, not just Plank.

I think MD will end up with a coordinator from a good p5 program...or Rich Rod. I don't envision another P5 coach leaving to go to Maryland. It seems UM is paying to play and is willing to pay good money for a coach and his staff, which is always just as important as paying the actual head coach.

Agreed, Binge (sorry to belabor the poin on a Rutgers board, but actually this stuff could very apply to Rutgers in the near future). The new coach might very well be somebody nobody's ever heard much of, as a matter of fact.

I often think about how disappointed I was as a kid when the Redskins passed on Chuck Knox and hired some no-name offensive coordinator from San Diego to replace Jack Pardee as coach.

“We want somebody who’s going to come in here and excite the fan base,” Anderson said. “If you look at football today, fans want an exciting, wide-open offense, and I think that’s part of why we weren’t successful these last six games.”

The right coach can be successful at Maryland with the proper definition. I’m talking more wins than losses. Make fairly regular bowl appearances. Occasionally crack the top 25, and/or beat teams there.

We’ve seen the transformative power of coaches at Oregon, where Mike Bellotti and Chip Kelly turned the Ducks into piranhas. We’ve seen it work the other way at Miami, where Larry Coker and Randy Shannon turned the Hurricanes into a light drizzle.

Sounds like spread offense with a lot of scoring and no Pro set offense.
