McConnell had 5 steals today

Caleb is a super well rounded player. Hes the most complete player we have. Hes a very good defender, has a really smooth shooting motion, his 3 ball always has good rotation and is always on line, he can get into the lane, can shoot of the dribble. Hes really good

Great game by him. Only he and Eugene brought their A game unfortunately. We need to play more aggressive defense on the perimeter, we give up far too many good looks from 3 and need to cause more turnovers.

And those were all the steals RU got.
boxscore says 4, although maybe they missed one - regardless, his best game, as I just said in my post with 14 points 3 boards and a block, too. He's really coming on. I'll admit I didn't think he'd make this kind of progress based on the early games. That's probably why I'm typing at a keyboard, lol.

mathis and mcconnell were the targets of lots of criticism early [eyeroll]

Yes they were, but I don't mind criticism when it's warranted - I don't like the "let's run this guy off the team" criticism or saying someone will "never" be any good based on 5-10 games in one's freshman year. I was critical of both of those guys early, but based on their performances, not that they didn't show flashes and couldn't get a lot better.

I've been a fan of Caleb from the beginning. He just looked timid early which for a true freshman point guard is understandable. The potential was obvious. Height length 3 point shooting passing handle. He's got the total package

My original concern was that he might not be athletic enough for this level. No longer concerned with that. The two Mics might be the key for us to get to the next level.

Could Caleb start at pg next year with geo and Mathis in
The backcourt ? We have a lot of options

Has very fast hands. Corey Sanders and Corey Chandler both had very quick hands. Caleb is up there with them.

When I went to the open practice I said he is the best passer on the team. He has a high basketball IQ.

He just needs to calm down, get comfortable and hit the weights.

Once he has his confidence he will be fun to watch.

I forgot to mention, caleb is also our teams best free throw shooter

He was a 25% three point shooter coming into the game and 1-7 in the last four games.

I like him but let's not go wild over one game.

I understand the % may not look great but remember that % includes early season games where he played like 3 minutes and mightve been 0-1 a bunch. He has a pretty looking shot with good rotation

this....Kyk has him as our best guard now...
Nope. Geo is still our best guard but caleb has the most all around assets in his toolbelt if that makes sense. Calebs ceiling is sky high

How great it is to have a roster of guards like we do : Caleb, Geo, Montez and Ron. AND Mic coming in next year's class !!
Won't mention Issa .... but I cling to the hope that Pike will find a way to get value out of a 6'10" SG who can shoot 3's (or once could).

Started this thread to recognize McConnell’s performance today and chose to focus on steals (box score originally said 5 steals, now says 4).

As pointed out by others above, he has a well-rounded skill set that showed up today with a very efficient 14 points on 5-10 shooting (including 3-6 from three), 4 steals, 3 rebounds and a blocked shot in 24 minutes of play. No assists today but is an excellent passer, as we have seen.

Caleb has to work on his handle but otherwise he’s a pretty complete player with excellent defensive skills, and I hope he continues to earn extra minutes as the season progresses and his game continues to improve.
