The guy had a great decade of winning with the canes, but his teams have been dreadful in the last 2 years. He’s 75 years old. Is this another example of a guy who couldn’t adjust to NIL making college sports the minor leagues?

From Hoops Dirt
>According to multiple reports, including one from early this morning from the Miami Herald, University of Miami head basketball coach Jim Larranaga intends to announce his retirement later today.
Larranaga, who will turn 75 in October, is in his 14th season at Miami. He has also been the head coach at George Mason (1997-2011), Bowling Green (1986-1997), and AIC (1977-79). The 40+ year coaching veteran holds a 744-508 (.594) career record, including a 4-8 mark with the Hurricanes this season.

During his career, he led both Miami and George Mason to the Final Four. Larranaga has also been named as the Associated Press, Naismith, USBWA and Henry Iba National Coach of the Year, twice was both the ACC and USBWA District Coach of the Year and was the 2013 NABC District Coach of the Year.

Assistant Bill Courtney is expected to be named interim coach. <

I saw a comment under this post, reminded me of when he was at George Mason and they went to the final 4. He's been a good coach for a while but as the comment points out he left for greener pastures after that final 4 appearance so it is pretty ironic..

Guaranteed this is a mutual retirement where he’ll get a buyout. Thus, folks who say that Pike can’t go after this year could me mistaken.

But they need to get some contracts for these players or else there will be no point in recruiting highschool players anymore because you can't develop them and experience the benefits of that development.

There is a massive difference between University of Miami and George Mason but I wouldn't expect the common person to understand that.

Unless it’s health or family related, it’s pretty crappy to quit in the middle of a season.

I would have said this years ago..but the current state of college hoops isn’t what these older coaches signed up for.. good for him,
Yeah, I guess there are no regards for anyone or anything. Do whatever you want as long as you get paid. I keep thinking it’s not professional sports.

Change is inevitable in all occupations.

The portal rules and NIL have changed what it takes to be a successful coach. Some will adapt, others will leave the profession.

These comments I always find extremely stupid. Really dumb. Next level dumb. When you realize it took him, 40 years to seek greener pastures. Not 4 months.

Yeah but wasn’t it stupid him saying why should a guy get paid a million dollars to play college basekball ? The. It turns out he makes $2 million to coach it

Feels like there's generally more continuity with football... Basketball on the other hand has completely jumped the shark.

I'd almost be surprised at this point if Pikes sticks around more than another season or two. You know he hates what it's become.

I could see him pulling what Tony Bennett did and forcing BKnight on us right before season starts.

I think he just deals with it, makes the best of it, and most importantly makes sure future generations are comfortable financially.

I am guessing he doesn't like it, but he 100% understands why it is happening. His kids are the same ages of college athletes.

Don't think that was the problem.

In theory it’s not hard to adapt to this climate, treat everyone as a 1 and done (even if they aren’t an NBA 1 and done) and go all in on offensive talent. You need 5-8 absolute offensive studs on your team who can all create their own shot or cleanup and finish underneath. Defense is worthless to recruit for since the players won’t be around long enough to learn the system. Run the O like AAU ball with lightning tempo, flushes, jellies, etc. Maximize your total possessions and push the game to the 90-110 point range, simply outscoring your opponent.

I think the opposite...get 2-3 offensive players and back fill the rest with guys who will play D and won't cost as much

So basically the pike approach sans the defensive busts this year.

I think the key in the one and done world is your defensive players HAVE to come from a power conference. You can’t bring guys from mid and low majors who defended well up to power conference level. There’s no time to waste adjusting to the new level of play or else you get busts like we’ve seen this year.

I am having a tough time really identifying why we have been so bad defensively. I am thinking the "5" position is a big part of it.

Maybe I am crazy, but I think it may just click and one day we come a Top 50 defensive team. I think the potential pieces are there.

would be cool if he did it right now and not waste any more of our time

The problem is many of these coaches don't want to actually produce results annually.

No more "oh we need a couple years to develop guys and then you can expect results. We'll be bad the next couple of years but it's okay. Just trust me."
Meanwhile the coaches are still getting paid regardless (and fans being charged for tickets and donations).

They can't use that excuse anymore.
And frankly it seems these old coaches don't like it.
Sucks being required to work for your high salary.

It's the difference between coaching and short-term hiring. It used to be you convinced kids with potential to come to your school and you taught them how to improve so by they time they were upper-classmen, you had created valuable contributors. That's what these old-school coaches signed up for (30 years ago).

Now, to be successful, you need to buy players who are valuable right now because you know you will never have enough time to teach them before they are gone (seeking more money elsewhere). The teaching aspect of the coaching profession has been minimized so much that you can drown it in a bathtub. If you have the money to get the better players, you will (or should) win. If you don't, you will lose. Unless you're Pike - where you get the two best recruits in the country and still can't win.

Simple rule change would solve a lot of these issues. If you've accepted any NIL money, you must sit at least one year when transferring.

That will slow the perpetual free agency landscape that is currently ruining college athletics.

I don't know the legality but they could also say any NIL above "x" amount has to be structured as a multi-year contract.

Now that everybody is taking the money, they have to sign a contract for whatever term the contract stipulates…1, 2, 3 years. And pay tax on it. The days of taking huge dollars with a free walk are going to end.

And what about when a player is a bust?
Can the school break the contract and tell them to transfer out?

The days of coaching staffs pushing out their recruiting failures would also end.

Bring back Reiber, Chol and Jalen Miller?

College basketball/basketball culture in general has always been a dumpster fire. Its always been a me me me me sport down to the youth level at aau. “Get yours” is basically the sports mantra.

Football is much more family and team oriented. Far better culture than basketball

Dayton’s Anthony Grant, with his Florida background and NYC recruiting success, would be a great successor .
