Could not adjust to NIL? He had a final 4 team a few years ago that was NIL driven. The guy had a great decade of winning with the canes, but his teams have been dreadful in the last 2 years. He’s 75 years old. Is this another example of a guy who couldn’t adjust to NIL making college sports the minor leagues?

Guaranteed this is a mutual retirement where he’ll get a buyout. Thus, folks who say that Pike can’t go after this year could me mistaken.
We can only hope.there will be more like him leaving after this season
There is a massive difference between University of Miami and George Mason but I wouldn't expect the common person to understand that.I saw a comment under this post, reminded me of when he was at George Mason and they went to the final 4. He's been a good coach for a while but as the comment points out he left for greener pastures after that final 4 appearance so it is pretty ironic..
Unless it’s health or family related, it’s pretty crappy to quit in the middle of a season.
Ohhhhh. So it waaaas NIL!!!!!
You must be joking or a fool . Get paid $3 million and question why one of his employees gets paid $1 million . Lol 😆He adjusted…it seems like he just hates it. Couldn’t agree with him more
Yeah, I guess there are no regards for anyone or anything. Do whatever you want as long as you get paid. I keep thinking it’s not professional sports.I would have said this years ago..but the current state of college hoops isn’t what these older coaches signed up for.. good for him,
These comments I always find extremely stupid. Really dumb. Next level dumb. When you realize it took him, 40 years to seek greener pastures. Not 4 months.I saw a comment under this post, reminded me of when he was at George Mason and they went to the final 4. Yeah but wasn’t it stupid him saying why should a guy get paid a million dollars to play college basekball ? The. It turns out he makes $2 million to coach itThese comments I always find extremely stupid. Really dumb. Next level dumb. When you realize it took him, 40 years to seek greener pastures. Not 4 months.
i think i would use the word hypocriteI saw a comment under this post, reminded me of when he was at George Mason and they went to the final 4. He's been a good coach for a while but as the comment points out he left for greener pastures after that final 4 appearance so it is pretty ironic..
I think he just deals with it, makes the best of it, and most importantly makes sure future generations are comfortable financially.Feels like there's generally more continuity with football... Basketball on the other hand has completely jumped the shark.
I'd almost be surprised at this point if Pikes sticks around more than another season or two. You know he hates what it's become.
I could see him pulling what Tony Bennett did and forcing BKnight on us right before season starts.
Yes. Guessing his players (or some of them) are quitting on him.Unless it’s health or family related, it’s pretty crappy to quit in the middle of a season.
Don't think that was the problem. The guy had a great decade of winning with the canes, but his teams have been dreadful in the last 2 years. He’s 75 years old. Is this another example of a guy who couldn’t adjust to NIL making college sports the minor leagues?
I think the opposite...get 2-3 offensive players and back fill the rest with guys who will play D and won't cost as muchIn theory it’s not hard to adapt to this climate, treat everyone as a 1 and done (even if they aren’t an NBA 1 and done) and go all in on offensive talent. You need 5-8 absolute offensive studs on your team who can all create their own shot or cleanup and finish underneath. Defense is worthless to recruit for since the players won’t be around long enough to learn the system. Run the O like AAU ball with lightning tempo, flushes, jellies, etc. Maximize your total possessions and push the game to the 90-110 point range, simply outscoring your opponent.
So basically the pike approach sans the defensive busts this year.I think the opposite...get 2-3 offensive players and back fill the rest with guys who will play D and won't cost as much
would be cool if he did it right now and not waste any more of our timeFeels like there's generally more continuity with football... Basketball on the other hand has completely jumped the shark.

It's the difference between coaching and short-term hiring. It used to be you convinced kids with potential to come to your school and you taught them how to improve so by they time they were upper-classmen, you had created valuable contributors. That's what these old-school coaches signed up for (30 years ago). The problem is many of these coaches don't want to actually produce results annually.
No more "oh we need a couple years to develop guys and then you can expect results. We'll be bad the next couple of years but it's okay. Just trust me."
Meanwhile the coaches are still getting paid regardless (and fans being charged for tickets and donations).
They can't use that excuse anymore.
And frankly it seems these old coaches don't like it.
Sucks being required to work for your high salary.
Now that everybody is taking the money, they have to sign a contract for whatever term the contract stipulates…1, 2, 3 years. And pay tax on it. The days of taking huge dollars with a free walk are going to end.Simple rule change would solve a lot of these issues. If you've accepted any NIL money, you must sit at least one year when transferring.
That will slow the perpetual free agency landscape that is currently ruining college athletics.
I don't know the legality but they could also say any NIL above "x" amount has to be structured as a multi-year contract.

College basketball/basketball culture in general has always been a dumpster fire. Its always been a me me me me sport down to the youth level at aau. “Get yours” is basically the sports mantra.Feels like there's generally more continuity with football... Basketball on the other hand has completely jumped the shark.

Wow that’s sad.Talked to Canes buddy, forced out by their boosters
