Mike Brey Stepping Away From ND

Would being concerned help? 🙂

I think we hope that Hobbs will do what's needed to keep Pike here at RU for the foreseeable future, and forget all about it since worrying won't do anybody any good.

Should we be concerned that Coach Pikiell might make a great candidate for this spot, or Danny Hurley?

I started a thread a minute before you. No biggie but I was going to add "Let the hand wringing begin".

Happened quicker than expected.

"Coach, after seven years of hard work, you've gotten Rutgers to the NCAAs for the third straight time and are about to sign the highest-rated recruiting class in your time at Rutgers. What are you going to do next?"

"I'm all about rebuilding challenges, so rather than see how far this ride will go, I'm taking my talents to South Bend."

Naaah.

Steve’s has a mere buyout of $15,000,000.00 after this year and it drops 2 million in 2024. It is public knowledge under the Sunshine Law, as is his salary. I don’t think the Irish will pay that for Steve or for Danny. Not sure what Bobby Hurley buy out is? I go after Mike Hopkins heir apparent at the Cuse.

Notre Dame can’t afford him. ACC conttr act TV not RU. ND has some big donors but for football. I think whatever they offer Pike (they will reach out no doubt) we’ll match or exceed.

Coach Pike is a hero here and is FINALLY after 7 years, about to see the true fruit of his labor with these classes coming in, like could put some Final Four runs together in the next 5-8 years … why go through the hard part again at a school where basketball is GUARANTEED to always be 2nd most important

Pike will retire at Rutgers
Who knows. Anything can happen.

It’s never a good idea to put a coach, or anybody else, on a pedestal. And it’s useful to remember that coaches aren’t fans; they’re professionals doing a job. It’s part of their job to exhibit love for their current situation. And when they go to a new situation, that becomes their new current situation.

They can be fired for non-performance at any time and they know it. The same fanbase that adores them today would hate them if the winning stops.

Good, smart coaches make career decisions accordingly.

This sounds good but when it comes to Pike is just way off base

He is following in Calhoun's footsteps and will stay at Rutgers and become a legend here

Can we please not do this after everytime a spot opens up? I get the perception Rutgers isn't a better job than a lot of these schools but it absolutely is. Pike isn't going anywhere.

I don’t see why anyone would do the impossible to resurrect a long dead program (in the basketball hotbed with 5* prospects a tennis ball throw away), bring it to the top of the best conference - and then leave before winning multiple national championships. Especially with a major arena upgrade on the way. It’s 100% his program.

Maybe. Predicting the future with certainty is not my thing. I am happy to simply wait and see. I have no opinion about what will happen, just the opinion that I hope he stays for a long time.

Why move down?
Exactly. Of course he could succeed there. Is it better to be head basketball coach at Notre Dame, when you have to rebuild and will always be second fiddle to football (or 3rd, behind spring football too), or at a top 25 contending Rutgers with great players already in the program and pipeline, next to the media capital of the sporting world, in the highest profile basketball league? (Big XII may better right now in some ways but they will take a step back when OU and Texas bolt, too.)

Yep. Not saying anybody would offer what it might take for Pike to make a change. But you never know. Pike might be thinking of early retirement and relaxing, enjoying life while he’s relatively young. A boatload of guaranteed money might be just what he wants.

He’s working his ass off. Who could blame him for wanting to secure a very comfy life while he’s still able to enjoy it?

He can resurrect Rutgers but can’t be enormously successful at Notre Dame? Ok.
Notre Dame isn’t a step up from where he has brought Rutgers. Especially since he has two 4 stars and one five star (so far) committed over the next two recruiting classes. There is no reason for him to leave Rutgers for that job.
