Most "Rutgers" Rutgers Athletics Moment/Event/Person

New cheer introduced at a basketball game fall of 1983 or so : “Rutgers - We are - Sportsminded”. It didn’t go over well

Losing to Villanova two weeks after winning at Tennessee in 1979.
Losing to William & Mary the week after throwing a scare into Alabama at the Meadowlands in 1980.
The Gary Waters snowstorm
The RAC scoreboard welcoming "Billy Tacker" before a WVU game on CBS
(minor, but so very, very Rutgers)
Cheeleaders back in 1986 trying to get us to chant "RSU" instead of "RU" because we're the state university, and also trying to get us to put "Goooooooooo State!" at the end of the fight song. Cemented my opinion of cheerleaders.

Hey Fred Gruninger,
You have a terrific football coach in Frank Burns and I see you are now scheduling Pitt,Tennessee,Alabama,Auburn,Penn State, etc.
So, you must be increasing the football budget a significant amount
FG--No, we will continue to spend as if we are playing Bucknell,Lehigh,Richmond and the football team can continue to practice on the same field the baseball team uses and we won't build a indoor facility or expand the stadium or raise the recruiting budget and the high school weight room will be fine

Hey Fred Gruninger,
There is this new basketball conference forming with a lot of good schools in it. They are going to call it the Big East.
FG--We aren't interested. We have this long history with powerhouse programs like Duquesne,Saint Bonaventure, and George Washington.

Hey Fred Gruninger,
Wow, can you believe how the Big East has turned into a national power overnight. Everybody who is anybody is moving to it. You certainly are going to say yes this time, right ?
FG--No, see my same answer from a few years ago.

Keep these coming. We're looking for content for our next episode and the less we have to work for it, the better.

Gruninger and Pernetti were worse than Hermann. She was simply mildly incompetent - they were epic disasters.

Strong candidate for most clueless RU post of 2019.

2019 has a long way to go, but this one rates as the leader in the clubhouse for now.

Who can forget when Greg sent out the punt team on defense vs WVU on 4th down at midfield, only to see WVU QB check off to a pass play and complete a 50 yard TD pass at the end of the first half?

Pernetti hired Rice and Flood...led to two scandals and he botched Rice firing.....he was a disaster that took years to get out of

Grunninger turned down Big East...nuff said

Julie may have been ineffective because she wasnt liked and the media had Julie Derangement Syndrome but she didnt have momements like Tim and Fred that sank the athletic program

Don't forget the re-write of the Alma Mater to please SJW types.

25 years. So RU.

Rc64 thanks for the memory. I was there for both games. Would have been or first undefeated s eason . Still ran the single wing. Did Bateman arrive the next year ? Pobably, since e did go undefeated in '61 with Sam Mudie under center.

So many “classic” moments were nailed already so here’s one from my freshman year (98-99): ESPN on campus for ‘Bubble Watch’/ the NCAA selection show with live shots of our team...as we don’t get picked.

Similar to the Cincy debacles- last game of the ‘94 season, 5-4-1 going into I think 4-6 or 3-7 Pitt, bowl game on the line, Pitt pretty much blows us out. Honorable mention- 2011 UConn (4-7 at kickoff) game with share of BE title on the line and game was over on the first drive.

Another one- Warren Sapp discovers we greased the FG posts prior to I think the ‘94 Miami game in anticipation of a ‘big upset’...the ‘big upset’ did happen, but it was just Miami getting mad at us and laying the smack down.

Coach Bateman's first year was 1960 and he switched RU from the Single Wing to the T formation. 8-1 in 1960 and, as you wrote, undefeated in 1961. Awesome times on the Banks!

People claiming Pikiell has done the impossible in bringing MBB back to success. Trolling those who expressed any concerns with the program. Talking about first round conference tourney byes. Some even talking up NIT or NCAAs (pfft).

The team falls flat, losing the final 3 games. Does what MBB always does in March: watch BB on TV.

This will be fun, saw the idea on twitter.

What do you think is the most "Rutgers" Rutgers moment/event/person in the history of the Athletic Department.

Here are some ideas:
1995- UMASS (4) basketball game suspended due to "sit in". (Rutgers was leading at the half when the protest started and the game was suspended). Rutgers lost the made-up game.

2010- Fred Hill Jr. fired for heckling the Pittsburgh baseball team.

2012- Mike Rice Video

2013-2015- Julie Hermann (enough said)

2014- Ray Rice video emerges (I know he was not at Rutgers, but still impacted the athletic department and reputation).

2015- Kyle Flood secretly meets with a professor, trying to disguise his identity regarding grades.

What else can you nominate?

150th Anniversary of Birth of College Football: and we may not play the first game of the college season. We're not playing Princeton either.

If we were Notre Dame, USC, tOSU, Ped State, Bama do you think any other team but the Birthplace would be shown nationwide / be the only game on
the air?

If we were Duke, UNC, Kansas, UCLA, Kentucky an a basketball event like the 150th ….don't you think that ESPN / Dickie V would be on it like flies on [poop].

Bur we're Rutgers....we take scraps , apologize for leaving any crumbs and humbly beg for more!~

pernetti hired flood and rice...created two major scandals..takes the cake

yesrutgers - lots of respect for you, but you're flat out wrong on this one. bac has it right. Pernetti made the two worst hires in football and hoops in the last 20 years, both of whom brought disastrous scandals to the university and Pernetti compounded the Rice mess by not firing Rice as soon as he saw the tape. He completely abdicated his responsibility there and I don't want to hear about Barchi on this one. If you're the boss and you see that tape, you find a way to fire the guy and get out ahead of the scandal, since you know that tape will one day come back to haunt you and the University if you see it and do nothing. Which it did.

Accomplishments at RU:

Gruninger

- Expanded RU golf course from 9 holes to 18 holes
- Hired Tom Young (MBB), Frank Burns (FB) and CVS (WBB)
- MBB - Final Four 1976
- FB - Undefeated team in 1976

Pernetti
- Transitioned RU from AAC to B1G
- Saved Greg’s last recruiting class when he left for Tampa
- Tried to hire Mario Cristobal as HC when Greg left town but got stuck with Flood

Julie

While Pernetti may have hired coaches that created scandals..Julie herself was the cause of a handful of scandals.

That puts Julie ahead of Tim as far as worse ADs go.
