Most "Rutgers" Rutgers Athletics Moment/Event/Person

yesrutgers - lots of respect for you, but you're flat out wrong on this one. bac has it right. Pernetti made the two worst hires in football and hoops in the last 20 years, both of whom brought disastrous scandals to the university and Pernetti compounded the Rice mess by not firing Rice as soon as he saw the tape. He completely abdicated his responsibility there and I don't want to hear about Barchi on this one. If you're the boss and you see that tape, you find a way to fire the guy and get out ahead of the scandal, since you know that tape will one day come back to haunt you and the University if you see it and do nothing. Which it did.
I get what you are saying but I look at it different. In regard to Flood. TP did hire him but even if he never would have become Greg part 2, I do not believe he becomes the mess he became if it were not for Julie.
As for Rice...TP in a hard place with the firing. His mistake was not putting his foot down and fire him even against the wishes of the school.
And even with mistakes, he was not an embarrassment to the school and still a great representative.

While Pernetti may have hired coaches that created scandals..Julie herself was the cause of a handful of scandals.

That puts Julie ahead of Tim as far as worse ADs go.
Agree- plus she created Floodenstien

Grease the goalposts ! Classic
I think this was also the game that the field was coming out of the ground in clumps. During TV Timeouts people would run out and try to stomp these divots back into place. Should have had Yakety Sax playing during these moments.

As one sportscaster put it, "That is why you're Rutgers."

I don’t think it was that game .

- Rashod Kent calling a timeout we didn't have
- Townsend dropping the sure TD against WVU in 2006
- The countless times RU Women's BBall had to play on the floor of a worse seed in the NCAA Tournament

Townsend .

-Paint chips falling (on national tv.)in the barn during Men’s hoops run in the ncaa tourney “76”
-“What’s a Rutgers” RU football vs. Tennessee.
-Fred Grunninger writing his letter of resignation the day he was appointed athletic director.
-The whole Julie Herman hiring process

Some do not know that it was the Rutgers Ag School faculty that planned the natural grass field at the new stadium. They were sure that the water table/ soil conditions below the new stadium would support a natural grass field and decided against a turf field. I remember watching games where huge chunks of turf came up on every play.

Another Rutgers moment.

Townsend .

And just to twist that knife, here's the dropped pass...

Gruninger and Pernetti were worse than Hermann. She was simply mildly incompetent - they were epic disasters.

Totally agree . Hermann could have been an epic disaster if she hired bad coaches. But she didn’t get that chance , so she gets an incomplete . By all accounts it seems like she wanted to hire Mullen, who would have been good. I am surpsied many people here still defend pernetti. If Julie did what pernetti did , people here would call her the worst AD in this history of college sports .

Julie didnt cause Flood to be the dope he was. She didnt make him go to that meeting...and she also wasnt the one responsible for the drug tests schemes with Monaco and Flood per the report. Am I actually seeing you write that Julie made Flood become a bumbling fool and then decided to become lazy in follow up with recruits.

Dont forget TP also failed to properly fire Fred Hill after another disaster season and waited until late April to do it. If a proper firing and search was had, RU could have had Fran McCaffery not ike Rice TP hired two coaches who caused scandal. Its not so much he hired Rice actually but that one didnt fire him and then when he kept him, he had ZERO PLAN to combat the fallout, he either should have payed Murdock off or be proactive with what Rice did.

Julie's scandals? Its not her fault they hired her, attacking the media...ooh so scandalous. People didnt like her and that is why she failed. Never connected, ultimately a qualified person at the wrong school. The school was so behind on the simple things of the athletic department that she had actually had to work on to be done properly.

Look she was ineffective because some people were still licking Pernetti's jockstrap even with all the bad he did and she could never gain any traction and was eventually muzzled. So its hard to tie her in with the Flood mess at the end because she couldnt do anything about it. At least she was trying to be proactive in seeing that RU needed to reach hire with the head coac. She failed in raising the funds to get rid of the disaster that was Flood...shortsighted donors...but ultimately she is AD so its her fault. At the end of the day, she needed to go and we are better off now with a political appointed AD to get things done.

the revisionist history about Pernetti and Flood is interesting.

what scandal are we talking about? Sandusky joke or Disney experience? Did you miss Mike Rice fallout which oddly enough led to Jules being hired. Hey lets just sit in the office and let Murdock release a tape and think no one will care

And remember she tried to replace Flood very early in her tenure but the admin and donors wouldn't go for it. She may have seen something very early on with Flood that gave her pause.

The AD is responsible for proper oversight of the FB program.

Leaving aside the many PR gaffes, what oversight did Julie provide over Flood and the FB program, especially in the drug testing program? Flood could do whatever he wanted. No surprise that they got sacked at the same time.

“I hope SL goes out of business”...”Did I or did I not talk to Jevon Tyree’s family”...”Let me make a joke about child rape”..misstep after misstep on top of how she handled the Flood controversy and her own controversy at Louisville. She was a disaster.

Comparing Julie’s missteps to pernetti’s is like comparing a parking ticket to a homicide.
Julies foot in mouth , bad jokes etc . They were just words man. What pernetti did was real decisions with tangibile catastrophic consequences .

she was talking to a class where they were discussing the pressures of the media attacks. Its an offhanded joke..ooh clutch your pearls The media is so righteous.

Tyree's family? hmm that was bogus..the whole thing was bogus...get back to me with the facts that happened. Shadiness on the Tyrees and associates

Flood controversy? tell me exactly what you are talking about. Julie was not allowed to have any impact on the Flood controversy,. it was taken out of her hands so please give me something she did during that situation back in September. I will be waiting.

Meanwhile Pernetti allowed Murdock to release a tape that blew up the whole Rutgers athletic department...but ooooooooooh she said the media is bad....oh cry for the media, they are so persecuted. Politi needs to be protected What is funny is the media was complicit in the whole Rice thing on their watch, they knew and did nothing..quite an embarrassing moment for the NJ media so then they got a hard on for Julie to try to make up for their sleeping at the wheel. Imagine all this happening in NJ under their own watch and its ESPN getting the scoop

So much heartbreak; This thread is a painful review of the many gaffes over the years. This could be done on an annual basis (for each school year) to nominate the frustrations encountered across the University/Department.

Words are just as important as actions when its comes to PR...

She was a PR nightmare.

Off hand jokes about your largest media partner IS NOT SMART!

Off hand jokes about child rape at a fellow conference school IS NOT SMART!

We know that Tyree wasn't bullied. We didn't know that at the time...when Hermann allegedly spoke to his family member. Turns out it wasn't a member of his family and the AD didn't tell the truth.

She actually did NOTHING during that Flood situation. In a time like that she needed to lead and did nothing.

she is talking to a group of students about journalism and the diffculities of handling the media, its a frigging class. Face palm yet again...again clutch your pearls Jan

nothing during Flood...face palm...do you realize that any investigation on that was REMOVED for her and done internally by Rutgers. How hard is it for you to get it into your head.

she didnt tell the truth? where are we getting that from? Not only was it a sham but the Tyrees were trying to scam Julie as well. It was bogus yet somehow you are believing their side in a made up fake bullying story that went no where

the fact she said this to a class looking to become journalists..saying that she hopes the org. that employs the most journalists in the state..goes out of business is beyond stupid. No defending this..

absolutely fake bullying story. Correct.

absolutely fake claim by Julie as well that she spoke to his father. No records exist of this.

Handing out an eight hundred dollar underage
drinking ticket to a twenty year old student at a football game. Then a few short years later calling that young alum ( same person) to contribute to the athletic program.

This is not Rutgers gonna Rutgers....would happen anywhere. Unfortunately that's life and it's generally unfair.

Ok sure, she wasn’t good at PR.
So that makes pernetti not an awful AD?

Where did i ever say this..that Perenetti wasn't an awful AD?? Please link the post.

Reading comprehension, people!

Julie was a much worse AD than Pernetti. Only thing i said.

Meh...good PR? No. But she was absolutely correct.

I was so happy that someone finally came out and said that about the Star-Liar. I have been saying this for years--Rutgers needs to forget the anti-Rutgers New Jersey media and create our own. Make sure the Rutgers TV station and RVision are available through all New Jersey cable companies . I would also like to see our Athletics website (www.scarletknights.com) become the go to place for New Jerseyans for up to date Rutgers sports news (even when there is a bad event). My nephew goes to the University of Florida and there website is very different. They often don't just give you sterile information about a game or event, but they are more like newspaper articles. Notice the very different approach they take---https://floridagators.com/

This may be another Barchi thing, and I may be mistaken, but it's my recollection that after the failed attempt to remove Flood, she was essentially told to back off on Flood and she began to focus on building up the olympic sports.
