Most "Rutgers" Rutgers Athletics Moment/Event/Person

But she wasn’t .

ok.

I believe she was..and provided reasoning.

Again, an opinion is neither right nor wrong. No one is right or wrong in this argument. But the majority opinion, as far as what i've seen, is Pernetti was the better AD. Julie was an absolute trainwreck.

yesrutgers - lots of respect for you, but you're flat out wrong on this one. bac has it right. Pernetti made the two worst hires in football and hoops in the last 20 years, both of whom brought disastrous scandals to the university and Pernetti compounded the Rice mess by not firing Rice as soon as he saw the tape. He completely abdicated his responsibility there and I don't want to hear about Barchi on this one. If you're the boss and you see that tape, you find a way to fire the guy and get out ahead of the scandal, since you know that tape will one day come back to haunt you and the University if you see it and do nothing. Which it did.

the first thing we heard was that Pernetti fined Rice, and we did not know why....I believe the fine was 50,000, I could be off....but the internet did not know the reason at first.

what doomed Pernetti was how the tape was put together and presented.....Rice probably had those ball throwing incidents here and there, over the course of months, or years....the tape was a compilation, and then it would be run on a loop, over and over again..

Pernetti probably thought he had done enough based on the way the offense unfolded, but on tv
the punishment looked way too soft, and Rice should have been fired...

this is not a defense of Pernetti, but I think he just thought he handled it sufficiently, but the tape was too damming

Ha ok ...but in this case you’re opinion is wrong

I'm new here, but is it a rule of these boards that any thread with this many replies must inevitably evolve into a thread where some fans complain about the "unfair treatment" that Rutgers gets from NJ Advance Media?

Stay on task. We need more of the most "Rutgers" moments. What about some more things related to players? A few that come to mind: JR Inman's "steak of turmoil" and half of the 2015 football secondary getting arrested a few days before the season.

Handing out an eight hundred dollar underage drinking ticket to a twenty year old student at a football game. Then a few short years later calling that young alum ( same person) to contribute to the athletic program.
That falls on the whole hiring the Middlesex County Gestapo to police our tailgates.

- Ash saying that he doesn't think being the birthplace of college football really matters... the day before the university puts out a press release kicking off the 150th anniversary celebration of the first college football game.
- The starting 5th year center captain of the football team transferring to a divisional rival for a grad year
- Taking the mic away from a veteran singing the national anthem
- Having the best season in 30 years and finishing 12th in the country.... to be sent to the Texas Bowl against a KState team with the 7th best record in the B12
- The Slaton non-fumble in 2006
- The 2nd string quarterback seeming to always have a career day against us
- The car accident that derailed the 2004 season

did anyone bring up we had a basketball player in the mid 90s that was thrown off the team for fondling womens feet..not that there is anything wrong with that

the fact she said this to a class looking to become journalists..saying that she hopes the org. that employs the most journalists in the state..goes out of business is beyond stupid. No defending this..

absolutely fake bullying story. Correct.

absolutely fake claim by Julie as well that she spoke to his father. No records exist of this.

it was offhanded joke with laughter, like you have never been in conversation like that..good lord...oh yeah forgot, media jokes all the time about people losing their job and we are supposed laugh, retweet and atta boy. The whole NJ media schtick during Julies tenure was embarrassing for them and thats why guys like Steve, Jerry, JP, Tara Sullivan, Keith, a whole bunch of small time NJ sports guys who never went anywhere basically suck...and all the media types suck up to one another with their snarky comments

Totally agree . Hermann could have been an epic disaster if she hired bad coaches. But she didn’t get that chance , so she gets an incomplete . By all accounts it seems like she wanted to hire Mullen, who would have been good. I am surpsied many people here still defend pernetti. If Julie did what pernetti did , people here would call her the worst AD in this history of college sports .

[

Julie didnt cause Flood to be the dope he was. She didnt make him go to that meeting...and she also wasnt the one responsible for the drug tests schemes with Monaco and Flood per the report. Am I actually seeing you write that Julie made Flood become a bumbling fool and then decided to become lazy in follow up with recruits.

Dont forget TP also failed to properly fire Fred Hill after another disaster season and waited until late April to do it. If a proper firing and search was had, RU could have had Fran McCaffery not ike Rice TP hired two coaches who caused scandal. Its not so much he hired Rice actually but that one didnt fire him and then when he kept him, he had ZERO PLAN to combat the fallout, he either should have payed Murdock off or be proactive with what Rice did.

Julie's scandals? Its not her fault they hired her, attacking the media...ooh so scandalous. People didnt like her and that is why she failed. Never connected, ultimately a qualified person at the wrong school. The school was so behind on the simple things of the athletic department that she had actually had to work on to be done properly.

Look she was ineffective because some people were still licking Pernetti's jockstrap even with all the bad he did and she could never gain any traction and was eventually muzzled. So its hard to tie her in with the Flood mess at the end because she couldnt do anything about it. At least she was trying to be proactive in seeing that RU needed to reach hire with the head coac. She failed in raising the funds to get rid of the disaster that was Flood...shortsighted donors...but ultimately she is AD so its her fault. At the end of the day, she needed to go and we are better off now with a political appointed AD to get things done.

the revisionist history about Pernetti and Flood is interesting.

I'm simply astounded that posters think saying really stupid things and not managing the athletic dept. particularly well are worse than hiring the man who destroyed almost everything Schiano spent 10+ years building and hiring the man who provided the most embarrassing sports scandal in RU's history. I'm sure some of it is because Tim was a loyal son, who played at RU and Julie was an outsider, but any unbiased assessment of them would clearly say Pernetti was much much worse, as hiring horrible coaches is hundreds of times worse for an AD than being a weak manager and poor communicator.

Dear Old Fred trekking up to psu to find out who provided their natural grass field only to be told you guys should know already, Rutgers provided us with the grass.

I have no problem with the Kyle Flood hire.
The only problem I have is he should have been interim. One and done aka Luke Fickel at OSU. I think that decision was not Pernetti’s decision. I think the administration
( that saw the athletic dept hereraging money)
Would not make anti up for a proven head coach. Penny wise dollar foolish. They will be paying a long time for that decision.
Julie Herman was a lame duck AD from the when
she was first introduced and the media attacked her for abusing her players and staff.

You left out the part of the Texas bowl. The part where K State received a million dollar payout and we were paid 500k.
Also Chris Ash dumping on the Rutgers traditions ( the spring game awards).

How about the Ledger great investigative reporting. The Schiano scandal, “Greg Schiano getting additional income from Nelligan Sports”. Facts were disclosed and printed in the ledger by Mulcahy years earlier at the time Schiano contract was extended.

...hey, what about the ‘board split’? It was hyped up as the creation of a ‘megasite’ that was going to ‘change the game’...instead we have a split audience with one of the sites using message board software seemingly straight out of 2002.

late to the party, but I think I have THE winner, which may or may not be posted already.

the most devastating thing to happen to RU was the crushing bb loss to Michigan in 1976

to set the scene, RU was sitting at 32-0, and many from the mid west scoffed at RU because we had not met any of the traditional BB powers....I believe we entered the game as a 2 point underdog, another insult...

RU could never get started, a blown layup or two, slam dunk, set the stage for a national disgrace let down..... we fell behind big and never made the RU run we were accustomed to

the papers were vicious.....

had we won that game, we would have faced an undefeated Indiana team, maybe the first time two undefeated teams met for the title....it would have been off the charts.

Joe, my Commodore 64 worked better than that site. What an utter disgrace to modern technology that site is. Then for them to lure customers under the guise that they were going to up grade it and here we sit still the same sh*tty usage.

2007, we went into the game ranked #10 against Maryland. We have a great defensive stand late in the 4th quarter and they call Eric Foster for a penalty for doing the chop. Automatic 1st down and seals the game for Maryland. Complete bull$&@t

This will be fun, saw the idea on twitter.

What do you think is the most "Rutgers" Rutgers moment/event/person in the history of the Athletic Department.

Here are some ideas:
1995- UMASS (4) basketball game suspended due to "sit in". (Rutgers was leading at the half when the protest started and the game was suspended). Rutgers lost the made-up game.

2010- Fred Hill Jr. fired for heckling the Pittsburgh baseball team.

2012- Mike Rice Video

2013-2015- Julie Hermann (enough said)

2014- Ray Rice video emerges (I know he was not at Rutgers, but still impacted the athletic department and reputation).

2015- Kyle Flood secretly meets with a professor, trying to disguise his identity regarding grades.

What else can you nominate?
RU isn't about just sucking, it's more about giving you a moment of hope so it can crush your spirit and soul. The biggest RU moment in recent history is the 2012 Louisville game with the BE title and Orange Bowl bid on the line.

To be specific, the fake FG play that resulted in a TD only to be called back a few seconds later. For that brief glorious moment, RU looked to be up 21-3 and the game would have been over. RU did it, we are going to the Orange Bowl! But the RU Screw Gods just laughed and said, we got you morons again!

I literally left the stadium right after the play. I could hear the PA system as I slowly walked to my car at LSM. By the time I got there, Louisville scored to make it 14-10 and we're driving to take the lead.

That my fellow miserable RU fans, is the most RU moment that I can think of.

Special shout out to @Rhuarc on this one.

You really left the stadium ?

Just seems odd . Because we still had to punt and we were ahead 14-3 . I thought Kyle flood was a moron even back then, but I still thought we would win that game .

When UL made it 14-10 and we fumbled the ensuing kickoff I turned to my best friend and my Dad and said, “we lost”. I f’n knew right then and there the game was over. The offense had been stalling out and the D was sitting back in preservation mode. My Dad tried to be encouraging, telling me there was plenty of time, D playing well, etc...but I knew. I just knew. The time from the phantom flag right up to UL taking the lead is IMO the ultimate “Rutgers Moment”...the time from the final whistle, to walking out of the Stadium, walking back to the car then sitting in 2.5 hours of traffic because lanes were closed on the Parkway is easily the worst I’ve ever felt as a Rutgers fan. I can’t even watch clips of that game or the RA Bowl.

It was a brutal loss. I didn’t understand why we didn’t blitz bridgewater more.

There’ve been plenty of BS calls against RU over the years. This is a perfect example of one of them.

But Julie’s behavior in that era didn’t say anything about her?

It seems you’re very biased against the media.
How could you not be biased against them after seeing all the nonsense over the years? They certainly seem biased & I guess you're one of them.
Julie made a joke & the media acted like it was a national emergency

"I ended up at Rutgers because the rich kids stole my spot at other schools, N.J teen says"
https://www.nj.com/education/2019/0...le-my-spot-at-other-schools-nj-teen-says.html

Maybe this?

The kid ended up at Rutgers Honor College. Odds are very very good that he could become more competitive for a Gates, Fullbright, etc. at Rutgers. And assuming he pulls a 4.0 or close to it, is probably more competitive coming out of Rutgers for top professional schools.

But instead, he tears Rutgers down to build himself up. Typical Rutgers, typical NJ.

Assuming he didn't want to go to school so close to home maybe he should have tried Maryland or Penn State as his safety schools too?

That loss hurt, but to me that’s not the narrative of this thread. How about this.
One of the biggest Cinderella stories in college basketball history, followed up by 40 years of apathy and ineptness. With few flashes of competitiveness.
That’s Rutgers in s nutshell!
Not that it can’t change or isin’t changing right now.( Coach Pike is doing a great job) In my opinion that is the M. O. over the last 40 years.
“Bigger time sports, growing pains, same old Rutgers, typical Rutgers! etc...
I think this thread is great therapy for all diehard Rutgers fans. It certainly answers the question “why not us”?
Like I said, not that it can’t change or isn’t changing now. Just explains why we are where we are right now.
Keep the posts coming!
Some of them are spectacular.

The week before our game I watched Maryland play WVU on TV. The one thing I noticed how much bigger they were than the Mountaineers.

That was confirmed from my seats (at the time) near the Tunnel when I saw the Terps take the field.

Biggest guys I ever saw up to that point at Rutgers Stadium.
