Not sure if they already have Paul on the RU workout plan or something, but I thought at the end of last season he looked like a really talented skinny high school kid. He posted this tweet today, and he looks like he's already packed on muscle. Kid is going to be a PF by the time he gets here:

Hmmm. The shakeout of the roster/minutes will be so interesting when Mulcahy arrives. If no one transfers we’ll have 13 on scholly. Geo and McConnell will play point guard this year, and then next year both will move off the ball for the most part for Young and Mulcahy to play point? Does McConnell go to the end of the bench and not play in 2019-20 after playing 15+ minutes per game in 2018-19? Does Kiss sit the bench, after playing a lot? Weird scenario as you can’t have a 13 man rotation, not everyone can play.

I think we need to see how these guys develop. Maybe for once we get to ease in a few recruits even though they're highly touted. Young seems like less of a PG than McConnell from film, but most of the incoming players seem very versatile. If no one leaves at least we'll have depth for once. As Omoruri shows, different players can develop no matter what the star ratings.

Imagine... guys competing for time rather than playing out of necessity! I'm excited

Yeah. Ideally you have established upperclassmen point guard(s) and even a talented guy like Mulcahy comes into your program understanding he may not play much as a freshmen. But we have kind of an odd scenario developing that Pikiell will just have to manage. Even a three guard lineup doesn’t help because then you have 7 scholarship guys for 2 front court spots: Massoud (I hope), Harper, Thiam, Omoruyi, Carter, Doucure, Johnson

Yea, these are good problems. It means next year guys will have to earn minutes, can be pulled if they are slumping or not doing what the coach asks, and if there are injuries we have real backups.

At the end of that season, if someone doesn’t like their role, he can transfer, and we can heighten the competition further. This is the closest we’ve gotten to a real team build in 30 years

From various player quotes when they committed, it sounds like Pike makes it clear that no one gets promised minutes. I'm sure that would apply to Mulcahy and Massoud too. If McConnell, et al. want to keep their minutes after next year then they will put in the work.

FWIW, the OTB podcast with Carino indicated the staff was already surprised and impressed with both McConnell and Harper. Mathis is a 4* and projected to start, Kiss seems to have impressed and is a glue guy (again from Carino interview), and Geo is Geo. On top of that, Eugene, Issa and Carter will be seniors when Mulcahy comes in, with at least Eugene and Issa having a ton of experience. Young will be a red-shirt junior that was a highly touted 4* recruit...

This year may be rough with a young team but that roster in 2019-20 will be the best here in decades, at least on paper

Mulcahy doesn't strike me as the sort of recruit who will start from the get-go of his freshman year, especially with all of the guard depth we will have in 2019 (Geo, Mathis, McConnell, Kiss and Young will all be ahead of him).

It will be nice (finally) to not have to force-feed our freshmen to play minutes they shouldn't be playing. And from what I've read, Mulcahy will have to work on his outside shot and defense in college, so he will need his freshman year as a developmental year.

Unless he just comes in and is better than the other guys. What do I know anyway?

I’ll also add that it will allow him to ease in at wherever he is most comfortable to play. If he can’t handle big minutes as lead guard initially but can play other spots and add secondary ball handling to the lineup, all the better.

Mulcahy has spoken in interviews about Geo sliding over and him playing point early in his career i.e. his freshman year. Hopefully he is not too dissatisfied if he ends up being the 6th guard in the rotation, with maybe some spot minutes at the 3 position like someone said. Thing is, the roster situation will repeat itself Paul’s sophomore year too, as Young will still be there as a senior as will all other guards.

Mulcahy is an impactful player. He’ll get minutes early and often as a frosh.

The great thing about having a full and more talented roster is......you gotta earn it. The best players play and if you want more minutes, you take them by outplaying others in practice and in games.

Don't get too hung up on positions. Guys who can play will play.

All in due time. All in due time.

10 of 13 in a rotation

This is bad, but we weren’t very good last year and I can see some of players on the squad last year have to fight tooth and nail to be a consideration for minutes in a legitimate program.

I also think Paul will play a lot of minutes as a frosh. I think he will get about 20 mpg.

I would love for a guy like Mulcahy to NOT start. It would a be a nice luxury to not force a freshmen into the starting rotation. If he is talented enough, fantastic. But hopefully some of these upperclassmen round out and we can ease him in
