Being retired now, I have free time, lol, so I decided to see what the campus/lots/stadium/roads looked like. Basically, as of about 2 pm, all of the tailgate lots were in great shape, with only the front row of yellow and blue a bit soggy and the rest nearly 100% dry and certainly ready for cars - as I had posted the other day in the gameday weather thread, the lots have the best, lushest grass I can ever recall in nearly 40 years, so I figured they might hold up well and we know they are sloped and usually drain well, which they did. Included a pic of the yellow lot (where I'm standing) and the blue lot in the distance with a very rabid group of RU tailgaters in the front, who had been there since 6 am!! Chatted briefly with them and unfortunately, they can't all make Saturday, but they had a helluva tailgate going. White, green, scarlet, brown, purple, etc. were all fine with tailgaters only spotted in Green, unless I missed them. So the lots were not an issue and neither was the Stadium/Field, which looked perfect, as per the pic of that and every Busch/Livingston Campus Rd was dry.

The big issue, obviously, was the flooding from the Raritan River, which has River Road closed nearly everywhere from Highland Park to Bound Brook (although bone dry from Sutphen to Hoes Lane), as well as 18 being closed in NB; 3rd pic is of the south end of the stadium and flooded River Road (from Sutphen). Those closures would've made access a challenge, but I honestly think it would have been doable. I'm thinking the bigger issue was the logistics of having to reroute a lot of traffic around 18/River Road, which might've made 287 into a parking lot on a work night, plus many emergency/police staff possibly not being available due to other priorities. For local folks on the RU side of the Raritan, for the most part, getting to the stadium is easy right now (faster than usual for me from the Edison area).

Such a gorgeous day after such a tragic night. Certainly a shame we're not playing tonight as scheduled, which will suck for many who can't change their Saturday plans, but it's also hard to get too worked up over it, as it's just a football game in the grand scheme of things. On the bright side, Saturday is going to be spectacular with highs in the mid-70s, full sunshine (wear sunscreen!), and low humidity (and light winds). Hope everyone came through the storm ok and most can make it on Saturday. See you there and GO RU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing. I could never understand why those lots looked so terrible all the time. I am glad they look better !
It does not take much vehicular traffic to mess up grass/lawn. We saw this when the Amazon trucks continually drove off the edge of our wide driveway and onto our grass. The grass at the edge of the driveway quickly died, turned to dirt, and when it rained, turned to mud. Once we put in our notes to Amazon that their vehicles are not permitted on our driveway, we have healthy grass along our driveway.

Yeah, I'm guessing the lots will look crappy again after a game or two, rain or no rain...

That’s fair but not to bring up a sore point but penn state seems to be able to have decent grass lots so I always thought why can’t we? We have the best turf grass people around. Or certainly among the best.

@phs73rc77gsm83 can answer this better than anyone here. But maybe grass does not do well in that red dirt/soil and the Penn State soil around the stadium is better for growing grass?

Some of the grass lots are nice...other are just mowed weeds. They do get very worn out at the end of the season.

I just saw a video from New Brunswick at Commercial Ave and 18. Has to be 10’ of water there still. If they can get that and River rd to open they will be ok. I was also told today Schiano was given the option to play the game tonight with out fans and he was 100% against it.

What’s your expert opinion on River road receding and supporting Red Lot traffic from 287 by Saturday
Not a flooding expert, but I know where to find good info, lol - here's the graphic for the Raritan flooding at Bound Brook, which I've posted in the gameday weather thread too. There isn't a station at Rutgers, so the BB station should be a very good surrogate, i.e., if that one is below flood stage on Friday evening, as predicted, then River Road should be dry by then, at the latest (could be tomorrow morning even). Johnson Park is doubtful to be available though.

Thanks for the kind words Knight Shift and Bethlehemfan but there certainly others who went through the Rutgers Turf Management Program and are more qualified than I am. I do occasionally correspond with Dr Jim Murphy (the lead Rutgers turf specialist) as well as other leading university turf programs, and I read a lot of turf and agronomy related research but for me it’s more of an obsessive hobby rather than a profession.

However, if you notice the turf around the Marco Battaglia practice facility and elsewhere closer to the stadium you’ll see it is excellent. It is, of course, we’ll maintained. I don’t know if the tailgate lots are still extensively used but for a long time they were used for practices (not the football team) and other activities (intramurals, camps, informal events, etc.) and between that, parking, and that they are not being being as “highly maintained, “ they just aren’t pristine or what you might hope. If you notice, I think the Green lot turf closest to the stadium is probably better than the other lots (likely less use in my opinion).

It’s been decades since I’ve been to PSU so I can’t comment on that.

Bottom line is my opinion the turf in tailgate lots could be improved but it’s probably a matter of money and priorities.

The irony of this is that the turf in beaver stadium, practice fields and some of the parking lots comes from Tuckahoe Turf Farm in Hammonton, N.J.
Yes, and Tuckahoe turf was developed at Rutgers. It is used in many professional fields.

I hope all the tough guys said why can't they play the game...it is just a little rain see this picture. One look at this and you know why it was moved.
I am surprised that many here seem to forget the April 2007 storm. Had a similar impact on the Raritan and River Road. Didn’t think it was a great idea to funnel thousands of people that way tonight.

And I ordered my turfgrass seed from Tennessee. Someone loaned my a pair of orange shoes to wear when I mow the grass.
Hogan seed, from whom I think you ordered seed, is an extremely reputable company. They are a distributor. Almost all KGB is grown on the Pacific Northwest and then sold to various distributors.

I am sure your crowd miss you too! How do you get those seatbacks? I have tried entering my ticket office account number on the Knight Kushions site but it says I don't exist. I feel like I am missing the obvious season ticket number somewhere.

Did you happen to go through Livingston? Curious if the RAC facilities are ok.

Dont know had to give up my seats for the sake of my daughters AAU hoops and ball training.
I was furious with RU tocket office who would not put my 4 seats together even though I asked every year and the seats next to me in row 23 turned over no less than 4 times. They pissed me off good. Told them if they didnt put my seats together I was canceling my seats...they didnt and i did. But i did give them up more for the huge $$ it cost me for my daughters hoops.

If you're having trouble ordering for the whole season, get into the stadium reasonably early and order them one game at a time from their location behind Section 117(?). When they screwed up my order one year, this is how I got my seatbacks. After talking to the guy running the stand once or twice, he got it straightened out for me.

Pretty sure the gauge at Bound Brook got washed away or broke - showing "0" for the past 12 hours doesn't make any sense...
