He just comes out too far on the hedges and is caught out of position way to much forcing our defense to rotate and often leaving someone from the opposing team wide open for 3 as our guys are forced too often to cover the opponent’s big til Johnson gets back. I am not sure why the coaches have not corrected this. I feel this will really hurt us against a good 3 point shooting team

It's by design. It's been cleaned up a lot since early in the season but yes still not perfect.

This is preferable to getting beat like a drum on ball-screens like we did last year.

I tend to agree with Richthe Dentist, but since it has been so consistent it's obviously part of Pike's Plan and is part of the reason why perimeter defense(3's defense) has been so good. See how much Mulcahy slags off the corner guy when the ball is on the other side. He has lane responsibilities until the ball gets swung over there and then he has to race into position. A team that can really move the ball around could expose our cheats.

The point of it is to disrupt the ballhandler and not let him get downhill. Worked like a charm against Carr today. I expect it will be less extreme against Evelyn and Toussaint on Iowa because they're not as dynamic. Whoever the primary defender on those guys is will be able to slack off, which was not an option for Young/Mathis on Carr today.

I think we'll want those guys on Wieskamp and Fredrick instead of the PGs.

No it wasn’t they had 3 wide open 3 point shots that literally went in and out so we were very lucky!!!

The Big Ten, as a conference, is shooting just 31% on threes. That rates 28th out of 32 conferences. I think the strategy is partly a calculated gamble based on that fact.

By forcing the ball handler to retreat, you give time for rotation. It's that simple. We weren't going to let Okoru and Carr beat us. That was the game plan. Had Minnesota had a sharpshooter, you may have seen something different. Trust the coaches. 56 points surrendered today, and 7 games in a row our opponents are under 66 pts.

crazy talk...he was great today on those plays.

our rotations and help defense today are beyond criticism....sorry, just the facts.

We are one of the best defensive teams in the country. Announcers have commented positively how our play on screens is disrupting opposing offenses. Also we are holding pretty much every team under their average shooting percentage game after game. No one is lighting us up from 3. Disagree with your point.

Including today, Minnesota averages 69.4 mpg in conference play. Today, 56 and only because a couple of late cheap deep 3s went in.

Indiana averages 69 mpg but only got 50 against us.

Illinois 64, but against us 54. On the road and without Geo.

Penn State 72.6, but against us 61.

Nebraska 71 but only 62 against us on the road without Geo.

I'm confident the coaches know what they are doing with our D.

Ya think. Good thing Rich is a dentist and not a coach. (Only busting on you Rich) Look pike knows what he is doing. I guess because we are winning and not a lot to complain about some are really nit picking areas to of perceived concerns

Johnson had a Herculean task today and surpassed all my expectations. Definitely no complaints. He was a headache for oturu all game

Agreed. Almost all of Oturu’s points came when Johnson was on the bench or when someone else was defending him while Johnson was in. Myles’s defense has improved exponentially.

OP is correct that Minnesota got open three point looks as the result of these hedges. But that's the price we paid to shut down Carr.

Come on watch the game. His hedges caused the point guard to be flustered for 35 minutes, then Ron guarded Oturo until Myles recovered and our rotations were outstanding. You could teach a coaching clinic that’s how good we are at it. We closed out on the 3 shooters. They hit 3’s early in the first half , 6-7 of them and none of them had to do with Myles ‘ hedging .

Wrong. Watch again. We lost Kalshauer early for 2-3 and Willis hit some long 3’s but not the result of any hedging issues. It was a coaching clinic.

I did re-watch. Minnesota had three or four good looks from three late in the game (not the two Carr made). Tre Williams hit one and they missed the others.

Watch the first 38 minutes of the game. They got nothing all game. Instead we disrupted everything they wanted to run, including Oturo shooting 5-6 threes and he made one . It was a coaching clinic today that most coaches around the country knowing we are a great defensive team, would pay 5 times the price for a copy of the coaching tape.

I agree with you as my earlier posts show. It was a good defensive gameplan and we executed it well.

I think answers your concern.

To be fair to you Rich, he does discuss the potential pitfall of our approach. If a team gets hot and starts hitting 3's we could be in trouble especially with our struggles on "O" and the three.
