Name the states where state pride and not affinity for the state school is a driving factor for football players to stay in-state?

There aren't many- maybe Texas, Pennsylvania and Florida. What other states have strong state pride?

I think some of it is impacted by the quality of the state school, but you have to include all the SEC state schools.

PSU was having trouble keeping top PA talent home until franklin got there. They have just always recruited well in NJ and the DMV. Weirdly enough there is some loyalty to Pitt in the greater Pitt area.

Oklahoma only has 3 commits from Texas. Nebraska got 0 guys from Texas for the first time since 33 years ago.

This is because TCU, Houston, Baylor and TAMU have done well the past few seasons.

Bottom line is keep doing well and youll get better guys.

Hoping Odin is our RG3 and we step up on offense like Baylor did

State Pride? that is nice if it is convenient - and does not require some major personal sacrifice ... really hard to imaging that somebody would seriously make a real sub-optimal career opportunity decision in order to display "state loyalty"

the recruits who are playing football at the highest levels are not playing just to thrill the home town crowd - they are figuring that they have a chance to play on Sunday for millions of $$$ - and as long as that chance has a shred of hope in it - they will be going to the university that they think will give them the best exposure & development.

If the top 5 players in Connecticut got scholarships to Notre Dame, every one of those 5 players would leave the state of CT to play football.

Why? Because Connecticut football is lousy and these kids want to play on a big stage. It wouldn't mean that these kids did not like living in CT, it would mean the state of CT didn't offer them an alternative.

This is a catch-22 -- Rutgers cannot become big time unless they get the elite players from NJ. The elite kids from NJ do not want to play at Rutgers because it is not big time.

Not exactly true in all cases. Plenty of those states never keep their top prospects home with rare exceptions. Iowa, Minnesota and Kansas instantly come to mind. The top ranked QB this year was from one of those Pacific Northwest states and flew the coop to clear across the country. Even in Georgia where I live they keep a fair amount home but also lose plenty to Auburn, Alabama or even Tennesee. Eric Berry, Robert Nkemdiche, also a few of the defensive stars on Ohio St.

I responded to the OP's question. He said nothing about "rankings" or "ratings' or anything else. Bottom line, every one of those states I listed, have a good # of kids who DO stay home and play for "state pride" on a yearly basis, whether at "U of" or "State."

that's a good argument except when you consider how well Rutgers has done getting guys into the NFL.

New Jersey. Everyone in NJ has jersey pride deep down inside. Most people just tap into it when they need it or when its convenient.
Our location between two great american cities has been our greatest gift and our biggest burden. Central jersey is probably the only true part of NJ that doesn't feel the pull of philly or nyc as much - and central NJ is awesome. Great people, communities, jobs, schools, etc.. I love NJ, one of the most unique places in America .

If a player thinks that playing at a particular university will get them a better chance to have an NFL career - they will be inclined to go there -
If they think Rutgers will do it for them - odds are good they come to RU - - if they think Alabama will do it better - well hello Bama

Every state that does not have a big time football- CT, RI, NY, VT, NH, ME, MA, DE, NM,ND,SD, KS.

Rutgers just hasn't had the history to be considered big time football. It's up to the NJ kids to change this and so far, the NJ kids have not been buying in.

State pride & loyalty is superficial & subordinate to the tangible priorities of the individual

It is about like Company Loyalty - selective - and in may cases an outmoded concept - would you turn down a job change & good promotion out of 'company loyalty"? few people would - and nowadays why would they?

yeah, but are we not losing guys to Bama or is DBAck U losing a guy to NC? Or a school that put Sanu, Townsend, and Carro into the league losing a guy to Indy? Or Tim Wright and Tyler Kroft..going to BC....

even with our so-so performance we still infuse the sport. So what is the problem>? We don't know how to sell out ability to do it?

I'll say pride is highest in states like Louisianna, Georgia, Bama, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Texas & Florida even though they have a ton of kids out of state.

ESPN did an article on this a little bit ago. Other than Alabama the 15 states that produce the most ESPN 100 guys lose about 50% on average.

my point was that it is an individual perception thing - the guys who thought RU would be a good place to play & could give them a shot - came here Why more don't see the opportunity is unclear - maybe they think the key coaches had left with Schiano ( all the RU players in the NFL now came to play for GS)

yeah. I get that. Would be my guess as well.

State pride? Are kids who are D1-level athletes in any state actually motivated by state pride? Nah. Most likely they were witness to school spirit and popular support of the school's revenue athletics. They were exposed early and often to championship runs and the glory that follows it. RU has no such history. That sort of dynamic takes time and $, which hopefully converge and result in creating a winning program, to the point where kids want to be a part of the experience.

It's simple. Draw a line on a map of the US starting at the Delaware Bay. Go up the Delaware River to the NY border and across the PA/NY border to Lake Erie.

Every state south and west of the line yes, state pride plays a role. Some more than others. Every state north and east no, it doesn't have an effect.

The way I see it, growing up in Jersey prepares you for life. We compete with one another starting in nursery school. The reason alot of us leave Jersey, is that we aren't afraid of taking on the world. In my opinion (which doesn't count fer $heet BTW) alot of other kids' state pride is actually being comfortable staying close to home where they know how to navigate.

I think there's more "regional" pride or "area/city" pride than state pride. For instance, Pittsburgh guys seem to always end up at Pitt even with strong pulls from Penn State, Ohio State, ND, etc. That takes a lot of pride in an area to fend off those schools for a lesser program.

Central and NE Ohio players are extremely loyal to Ohio State, whereas the Cincinnati area isn't as much.

Miami has strong pride within their county limits, but outside of the city Florida players end up dispersed all over the country. Same with Texas guys. They go everywhere.

Louisiana seems to have the strongest pull. LSU never seems to lose guys from that state. Alabama falls into that category as well. Wouldn't put Georgia in that echelon, as Ohio State, Bama, and some other schools have stockpiled players from Georgia in the past.

Out west I don't think there's a ton of state loyalty. LA guys tend to end up at USC/UCLA but that's the closest example I can find.

If Rutgers had gotten into the Big Ten six years ago, before Urban Meyer, before Jim Harbaugh, before Franklin, before MSU upped their game...RU would have had a much easier time. It's damn near impossible to beat out all four of those guys for a top recruit

Fact! Half that roster is from Texas. I think Ok St even had like 75 kids from Texas on their roster last year
I lived in Texas for 25 years. Texans do have a unique sense of state pride but at the same time there's a special relationship between Texans and Oklahomans. They're almost like siblings in a sense as the culture in the 2 states is very similar to each other. Many of the great hs players in Texas have historically played for OU or OSU and nobody thinks anything of it.

So does RU for that matter. It's just the top guys that everybody harps on going elsewhere.

South Carolina--I lived there for two and a half years and just about every good player went to South Carolina,Clemson,South Carolina State,The Citadel,Wofford or Furman. I don't think Coastal Carolina had a football team when I lived there. Once in a while a kid would go to Florida State or Georgia, but there was a LOT of pressure to stay in state. People talked about Clemson and South Carolina sports 365 days a year.
