Next year: CJ Gettys becomes Geo Baker

Yep, those are the key years. Doucoure was a great start to 2018 (although I understand he may re-class to 2017). Fact is, if we are going to move up in teh B1G, we need more 4 stars like Doucoure and less 2 stars like Baker. I get that Pikiell hopes Baker is that "diamond in the rough" but you are not going to build a winning program by consistently taking "diamond in the rough" types.
Pikiell knows what he wants. Remember Brandon Knight wasn't highly recruited before he landed at Pitt, and he became a superstar for them. I think this kid will surprise just like the McCourty brothers did for our football program.

Geo might be the next "Brandin Knight" recruit; and he might not. Point is, Pikiell is not going to get 5 "Brandin Knights" by taking 5 "Geo Bakers". Maybe 1 in every 5 under the radar recruits exceeds expectations.

Isn't Bullock the same guy people were raving about because he once outplayed a McDonald's All American that wound up at Michigan State? Now he can't get off the bench?

I have only seen Gettys in a few games (SHU, Wisconsin, and PSU). He has good size which helps defensively. He does seem to lack quickness and misses a lot of put back shots after offensive rebounds.

He is a nice player to bridge the gap from our previous coach to the incoming recruits for the new coach. I would say he is backup caliber in the B10.

.

Coaching staff has to get him to stop playing volleyball. Catch the offensive rebound and go right back up with it.

Also Sa, Freeman and Gettys need to look at the perimeter when they are doubled or don't have an advantage. we had guys open when our bigs made low percentage plays.

I'll say it again, next year, we have to hope and rely on maturation and individual improvement. No huge difference makers as Freshman coming in. Williams, Johnson and Thiam from deep. Doorson, Diallo, and Freeman underneath. We know Sanders will already be better.

Gettys won't be easy to replace. So far in B1G he is exceeding my expectations. He has played 20+ minutes in 6 of the last 7 games.

He's also averaging 6.8 pts and 5.1 rbs in conference play in those 20 minutes, too... making him the #4 scorer (while the 3 guys ahead of him each get 5+ more minutes) and #2 rebounder.

When conference numbers are adjusted on a "per 40 min" basis, he's #3 in scoring, #2 in rebounds, and #2 in assists among players in our rotation.

Definitely more than I was expecting coming into the year, to be sure.

Next year we have to hope and rely on maturation and improvement because I don't think Geo Baker is coming in lighting it up as a Freshman ala Geoff Billet or Quincy Douby. Baker is probably somewhere in between a Thiam and a Omuyuri.

Still trying to figure out how Gettys becomes Baker - will surgery be involved? :>)

Geo Gettys Guard Play sequel to the Nutty Professor coming to a theater near you. Rated MA for Mature Audiences.

Good information and while I agree Geo is not at that level, he supposedly can shoot and that's what we desperately need. While he will clearly get better as he matures, I think he fills a huge gap we have at this time.
Hopefully, if he's a shooter the CS will figure out the best way to utilize him while he learns. Can't count on most of the other guys to become better shooters in the off season. If Williams could return to HS form, that would really help. Just a very tough situation to be good at rebounding and not scoring. Maybe the FT shooting will improve, but that won't be enough by itself. Need to play better on offense and gain some confidence.

we keep using Gettys as a benchmark.....and I like the guy
BUT last game he has 6pts & 4 REBs............not exactly scorching stats....
as a 7fter he doesnt even lead the team in REBS,,,,(close to half as many as Freeman )

I think a talented freshman can get 6pts & 4REBs......
freshmen are producing WELL all over the country
why not at RU,,,just once!

Few things....

Gettys is being discussed specifically because he's the only scholarship we definitely lose next year, and when the thread was started Baker was the only scholarship we definitely add next year. That's where the Gettys/Baker swap concept is coming from.

Taking a single game as a point in time isn't meaningful. It'd be like saying Freeman isn't doing much because he only gave us 4 pts and 2 rbs against PA St. In conference play, Gettys is averaging 6.8/5.1 in just 20 min... which is good for 4th and 2nd on the team.

As for his rebounding rate, if you look at the rate of rebounds while he's on the floor, he's very close to Freeman... but Freeman plays 25% more minutes. In "rebounds per 40 min", Freeman is at 10.9 and Gettys at 10.1.... while he also clocks in at 3rd on the team in points per 40 and 2nd in assists per 40.

Are those superstar numbers? No, but they're solid. Next year, we'll likely be less productive at the five spot after Gettys leaves... so the question is, will Baker improve our production at the 1/2 enough to (more than) make up for that gap.
