NIL murdered cinderella. Every sweet 16 team is from the power 4

Nobody is paying big NIL for a player if they have to ride the bench for a year.
Graduate Transfers (Clif) would still get big money.

Who is paying Lathan if he has to sit out a year?
Exactly. NIL in the old transfer rules wouldn't have been a huge issue, other than for attracting freshmen or grad transfers. The elimination of all transfer restrictions is the more impactful change, which amplifies the impact of NIL.

Only way this ever works includes some form of the following:

  • Salary caps
  • Structured contracts with players — preferably multi year — with buyouts (just like coaches have)
  • Revenue sharing
If we want everyone to be paid professionals, gotta form the “league” similar to professional leagues.
None of this means anything without proper enforcement capabilities. You don’t see NBA teams circumvent the cap by a owner having a wealthy season ticket holder cut a check to a free agent player they want on said team with the fear that there could be hell to pay if the league office found out.

Established college programs are always looking to maintain the “edge” they have had. The changes that are coming should outline the rules of engagement and an entity with enforcement powers to keep schools wary of the repercussions of playing outside the lines.

That’s when college sports [outside of the money] will truly evolve to professional standards.

Since 1985, the average number of conferences has been 8 to make the Sweet 16.
Low: 7 conferences (most recently in 2019 had 0 Big East teams in Sweet 16 but did have Gonzaga, Houston representing The American, and Oregon from the Pac-12)
2025 will be 4 conferences.

tough to figure out Alabama, Auburn and Florida and Kentucky and Arkansas and Ole Miss

and people still say its too soon to say things have changed

see where we are going here.

the Dukes, Michigan States and Purdues of the world are dinosaurs and eventually they will end up being just like the rest.

They are surviving that style because of either VERY STEEP TRADITION, a coach that transcends NIL or both

Michigan state has both, duke has the greatest tradition and culture maybe in the country and Purdue has a coach that has somehow navigated this shift better than anyone

can only hope that eventually many donor whales will get sick of paying for kids that don't work out or jump again the following year

All BS from those that always said winning is the only thing that matters and schools that compete at the highest level are to be glorified. Now when that is happening they're saying they miss low level schools who really can't compete, get lucky once in awhile and beat the superior team. Many acted like the NCAA’s were great since they determine who's the nation's best team. Now we're hearing the tournament is only great cause people really want to see train wrecks .Maybe that's why a guys ike Bac loves writing and commenting after tough RU losses ,he loves train wrecks especially when it's RU.

I’m sure I missed all the articles bashing the Big Ten and SEC for their huge media deals and calling for them to distribute the money to lower conferences. For equality and to create an even playing field.

I’ll have to check Carino’s archives.

You might be digging for awhile.

If things don’t change there will come a day soon when some bball loving billionaires say fck it, and give millions to their alma maters that are not P4 teams.

That in turn could become a trend, to where the best teams will simply be the best teams money can buy, and being part of a power conference in basketball will carry less weight.
