No. 14 Rutgers Wrestling Heads to Detroit for 2022 NCAA Championships / Tournament Thread

Looking at Deprez's results this year, he seemed to struggle against big, strong opponents similar to Bulsak. His only losses this year were: Schultz, Penola, Elam, and Dean. Not that it means much, but just an observation.

I would say to Bulsak, don't be overly offensive in this one, because DePrez is a huge counter wrestler and very strong.

People were saying this too about Aguilar when he was looking good. There are no guarantees
Aguilar would have been an AA, but his lifestyle ( or lack of) got in the way. Being a pothead and thinking you are Snoop Dog the Second, doesn't mix well with wrestling . Shawver is squeaky clean from what I hear and a lot more focused. You're right, there are no guarantees, but I'll bet the house on this one. Plus Aguilar at this point of his career didn;t win 2 matches at NCAA's

DePrez is a tough match for Bulsak
Deprez got screwed by the refs on the 3rd period td call for Dean… but better for Bulsak to face deprez then dean so….

Also, Michigan had a lot of things break their way… they are in it.. hoping for a close team race where they beat PSU

I get what your saying but ppl were guaranteeing future AA after a season or two from Gravina etc etc too..

Another thing to keep in mind in regards to the Bulsak match is the transfer/development aspect as well.

It would be a huge selling point and win for the staff who took a guy who was 1-6 lifetime at the NCAA tournament and made him an AA after a year in the room. It would be tangible proof to potential transfers, especially from smaller schools, who are looking to get over the hump and find success on a bigger stage IMO. The transfer portal is just as important as recruiting high schoolers these days.

The problem with that was Gravina was one-dimensional and injury-plagued his entire career. Once the slide-by was neutralized and wrestlers took neutral when given choice, Gravina was powerless. Shawver is all over the place with moves. Two completely different wrestlers' style-wise too.

True, seems like the knock on Shawver rn is in the strength n being overpowered department so if he can get that up then u’ll prolly be right on the future AA

with his length, he could easily move up to 133, and a good solid year in the gym. Yes, he is getting outmuscled, but a redshirt freshman going 2-2 in the second hardest weight in NCAA's is pretty amazing.

Where does Peterson fit into this picture. I don’t know who wins that match in the room. Peterson comes in with extremely good talent. But depth is his.

I think 133 is Oliveri spot for a while, being burnt RS. I don’t know how they do in the room. Based on seeing them both wrestle. I gotta think Oliveri wins spot.

Gravina was a warrior. It's impossible to wrestle to your potential with shoulder dislocation issues. If it wasn't for that, he'd be multiple AA.

I think it comes down to what you have inside and how much you want it during the offseason. Our kids are all ultra talented to compete against the best of them, but they need to do more. These top guys that we see - not a single guy here took a day off the whole year while they can comfortably party with the best of them.

I still remember when Darrion Caldwell was hanging out in an East St. Louis Casino around 2am the night before his NCAA Final vs Metcalf..Pretty sure he won some big money on the table that night and then goes on and has one of the biggest upsets in NCAA History..This Tournament is Amazing and that was a crazy night!

Shawver got beat by the Missouri wrestler (Surtin?)
He was about a 18 seed (Shawver was 22)

I agree 100% on Gravina. He definitely had the talent. As you pointed out his shoulder did not allow him many options on his feet. He was a beast on the mat. Won a key match against a top 6 kid from Nebraska that to secure the team win.

Next year does Oliveri redshirt and Peterson and Shawver hold down the fort? Very curious about Peterson. He is a top tier talent coming out of high school
He burned his redshirt. Pretty sure one of the group members (very close to the team) said next year will be:

125 - Shawver
133 - Peterson
141- Olivieri
149- Sammy
157- White
165- Kannaird/ Clark

The redshirt is still available. It isn't really burned or wasted in Olivieri's case. Conventional wisdom says take it first year to mature, get some open experience and get stronger. But it's still available for future use.

INteresting Note
Deprez has faced only B10 wrestlers (2-1) this tourney

He beat MD J. SMith, Caffrey and lost to Dean (and soon to be Bulasak!)

Looks like RIvera is in the hole mat 6 when action starts up
