When you look at the all-time series I think Rutgers has beat Penn State twice and I think PSU has won now 24,'' Rutgers interim coach Norries Wilson said, when asked that question. "I would think that we would have to win some more games against them before some would call it a rivalry.'' I think we can as fans put this to rest. It's embarrassing,we are no where near Penn St as a program or a fan base. We have miles to go before we sleep,I'm afraid.

If true, it's clear why Wilson is a lifetime assistant except at Columbia. That doesn't sound like a guy, who works for a coach who wouldn't even say "Penn State" until last week. I'm no Flood supporter but at least he recognizes how the fan base views PSU. Have some sack. And who cares about the prior years. There's no doubt it's a rivalry now although that's gonna change really fast if we don't make critical changes.

If we had maintained the level of play that we had under Schiano we would have beaten Penn State the last two years. Flood has totally destroyed Rutgers.

Wait. It is a rivalry now? But the overall record is 2-24 or something.

But it we don't make critical changes this "rivalry" will cease.

OK, I'll trust your fuzzy reasoning. BAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!!!

We're the Boston Red Sox up to the early 2000. Its a rivalry in our own minds as the rest of the country makes fun of us as we get jacked up for the regular season game, only to be sitting at home in the post season. What a joke.

The guy is right. At least he has the balls to say so.

I agree that Flood is making things worse but Schiano barely ever beat good teams. I remember feeling like this many times under him.

This is the old Yankees/Red Sox rivalry and we are the Red Sox....or better yet the red headed step child. This is a much bigger rivalry to us then it is to them which means it's not really so much as big of a rivalry as we like to think it is.

As per the fan base, how bout that crew sticking it out in the rain till the final whistle. I bet they were at 80% capacity at games end.

Compare that to the Rutgers Wisconsin game last year?

Well, he was trying to minimize the as* whooping. It hurts a little more losing 28-3 to a "rival". The PSU fanbase knows how it important winning this game was since NJ players mean so much to the program.

guys.. I don't know.. Schiano was like Nick Saban, he seemed to strangle his offenses (he never had the talent, but very similiar guys).. you guys must forget that when Greg was 10 down the game was over. Right now you have a talent deficit and Schiano crappy run to the NFL put you there. There is a reason that guy failed in the NFL. he is very rigid and does not adapt..-sg

It is not a rivalry, just like our series with Lehigh in wrestling is not a rivalry (Lehigh leads 44-2). There can be win streaks in a rivalry, but you need both teams to have had streaks and we are having a tough time even winning one lone game.

These are the games Schiano would lose, plus he would go into the game viewing it as an audition for when Penn State is coach shopping.

RU-05,

Can't compare last night to the Wisconsin game. Last night was warm and rainy, and they were beating down the visiting team. The Wisconsin game was a cold, soaking rain and we were the team getting beaten.

One might be a Granny Smith, the other a Mcintosh, but they are both apples. 11pm at night, in the rain, game securely in the bag, and there were a solid 80K still in the stands. That was an example of big time college football. The wisconsin game, and I was there, was embarrassing from a fan perspective, and that was b4 the game was out of reach.

We are 0-2 against PSU. Its sillly to count games played int he 80's and earlier. We were in a different stratosphere then.

But a rivalry needs history. If Rutgers starts beating PSU and the game starts to mean something over time, a rivalry is born. History is 100% part of the equation

Fair enough. But if we are rivals, at all, it has way more to do with proximity, the fans disliking each other, and the fact that we recruit mostly the same kids then it does with the fact that your team regularly beat RU back in the day. In no way could Rutgers have been expected to compete in those games.

I can understand people who deny a rivlary today, but the level of venom between the fanbases indicates that a rivalry is forming fast. Of course, being down 0-2 in the "Big Ten era" more losses may take that away quick. But for right now, we've definitely got something going. The way PSU is recrutiing, I could see that ending if Rutgers doesn't do something to get our program on an upward trajectory.

We are rivals. For fans. For recruits. It is a rivalry.. just not a very competitive one in the past. It will be a competitive one in the future.. last night was an aberration. Last year was a more accurate measurement of where things stand.... I hope.

but you fail to mention that one of those 2 years was Eric Legrand's injury year. Schiano's last 7 years was a very good percentage.

That was not a good team even before the injury, we struggled against both FIU, despite Khas being in beast mode, and Army.

Not a rivalry?? Tell that to the thousands in white singing the "good bye" song as time expired last night.

Until we beat them, it ain't a rivalry. Also, you need two sides equally invested to call it a rivalry.
