I managed to get down to the RAC last night to check out the annual Court Club open practice. Overall, it was a great event, made even better by the presence of a ton of former players. I spotted Austin Johnson, Greg Lewis, Marquis Webb, Kareem Wright, Rashod Kent (my all-time fave Knight), Mike Sherrod, Jerome Coleman, JR Inman, and a bunch more.

As for practice, it was "knight and day" different from previous years. Practice was very organized and it appeared as though we have the largest staff we've ever had. All the coaches were wearing the same warm-ups, which I thought was interesting. The start of practice had each position group broken up being coached by one or more of the assistants. It looks like there's a concerted effort to have our bigs able to finish with both hands and constantly be rebounding.

After working up a sweat, the whole team went to stretch under the supervision of our new S&C coach. Health is very important to this staff and Coach said that we were the most unhealthy team in the country last year and that was simply unacceptable.

Coach also mentioned that music was an important part of practice now and that the leading rebounder from the previous practice got to choose the music. He also mentioned the only two things the kids cared about these days was music and their phone. So, if they don't rebound and play defense, he wishes he could take their phones away.

The main part of practice was spend doing situational drills. For one drill we watched, Coach would let the team know if we needed a 2 or 3. This team is super athletic. I can't believe the ups that Nigel has. I think we'll see a lot of our guards taking it to the rim.

Shooting obviously still remains our weakness, but there are some bright spots. The best shooter on the team is Thiam. Mike Williams continues to look streaky. And, Freeman looks like he's improved his shot and extended his range. He also looks like he's slimmed down a bit since last year. Doorson looks great and I'd expect a few monster dunks from him. I also think we'll see him become a presence on the defensive end.

Of the newcomers, it looked like Thiam and Bullock will be a big part of the rotation. Thiam though a little skinny seems to have amazing composure. The game looks like it comes easy to him. I think we're really in for a treat with him. Bullock looks like he's the type of player that will get scrappy and do the little things that might not necessarily show up in the stat sheet, but will make the team better. Getty's just comes across as someone who loves playing basketball. He's not great in any one facet, but he's good in all. I was talking to Corey and he told me that Gettys is a very good passer and a great teammate. I didn't see Eugene at practice. It's possible he was there, but I don't remember seeing him do too much. Sa looks like he'll be versatile.

After practice I spoke to a few of the players and coach. Coach was raving about Thiam. He said he's the best shooter on the team, a gym rate, and a great young man.

Long story short, this staff emphasizes teaching, fundamentals, and basketball IQ during practice. I feel very confident that we'll see a more fundamentally sound team that will have fun and play smart. I don't know how it will equate to victories, but I expect we'll win some games we aren't expected to.

Thanks for the high points. I haven't been this optimistic about this team in several years.

Before I hear all the negativity, let me say I'm not expecting a lot of wins, but am expecting a lot of hustle, a lot of effort, a little grit and a team that will occasionally play over its head.

A lot to be excited about the practice especially the efficiency and crispness of the drills. A couple of things that jumped out at me...Sa and Thiam were really impressive... 2 6'9 players who can shoot the three. Thiam has a really high motor and Sa knocked down consecutive threes. Loved the effort especially after team practiced 2hr and 15 min earlier.

Sanders, Johnson,Laurent,Freeman, Gettys
Johnson,Williams,Thiam,Sa, Doorson.

That is a team I would be excited to rock with.

I am crazy, I know, but I could see 14 wins out of this team. So many variables.

Also, Johnson, Thiam, Sa our highest percentage 3 pt shooters.

Almost go time!

RRRRRRRRR

Sas shooting stroke was very evident during Midnight Madness. More composed than Williams, although Williams will get more attempts.

Team could surprise. They will contend. No team will be able to overlook them as long as they pass, and Gettys stays on his feet.

Encouraging, but a Junior MIke Williams that still can't shoot is unacceptable.

I am optimistic, having a healthy roster is so important. i went to games last year and hoped people did not get in foul trouble.

A few things that I noticed:
-Every one of our top 10 guys can dunk, including Nigel, who can really get up there. Also, it looks like we actively try to get dunks. The past several years drove me crazy when our big guys would put up a soft shot off the glass instead of dunking. Of course, the soft shots would roll off the rim or be slapped away.
-It will take someone with a lot of guts to draw a charge if Matt Bullock is driving the lane. He looks like a middle linebacker.
-Gettys is really outgoing. I can see why the players like him.
-Most of our bigs run the floor really well.

Thanks for the update. Ok I like the positives, what did you see that the team still needs to work on?

Liked the comment about the dunks, we miss a lot of layups.

Thanks for the updates from everyone. Hope all the players stay healthy and we never have to see someone 6'5 guarding a 7 footer again.
I think 12-14 wins would be a step in the right direction.

I liked that Coach brought up basketball IQ. Something this team has lacked.

The fact that we are excited for this season is something that has been missing for years. I expect a vastly improved team, record aside.

If this team can show an improvement in basketball IQ and fundamentals. I'll be thrilled. Watching lazy passes, poor FT shooting, and zero hustle for loose balls has been painful over the past few years. Don't even get me started on how we executed fast breaks...

We will not lose to anyone 78 to zip ..Without seeing them in the skin and blood I am getting vibes that this could be the start of something. While Ash has a resume that includes a stint at the apex of college football he is still a first time head coach . Pikiell is a proven head man at a program that he brought from nowhere. I have watched with great frustration the impatience of the football posters this year more than any. I hope that we show some patience here as the team and the coach attempt to establish the brand that we created in the 70's and 80's and then pissed away..

Based on practice and scrimmage, any thoughts as to whether or not Bullock will get minutes?

Based on the groups that were paired tovether, I'd be surprised if he didn't get minutes. I don't know that he'll be asked to do much on the offensive end in terms of scoring, but it appears that coach isn't afraid to let him distribute the ball and set picks. He's not real athletic or flashy but he seems like the type of kid who gets by on smarts.

I think he gets 5-6 minutes per game. The team has depth. Not fantastic depth, but people who are more ready than Bullock. I would not be surprised at all if he pushed for more.

Bullock is out of shape. Like the most shockingly overweight player I can ever remember including centers and he is only 6-4. Anyone that went to the open practice could see that and certainly the coaching staff will be working him hard. Can't envision him having any role this year. Beyond this year, remains to be seen.

Interesting observation, of all the people who went to the open practice this is the first comment about Bullock being way out of shape. Obviously, he has a big thick body and frame so slimming down a lot may not be reasonable.

No doubt Bullock can/will get into better shape. However, don't think he can't play, as is.....this is how he's played for years. The kid is a player.

It is easy to criticize a player from looking at him but Bullock has already lost some weight. He is a guy with a body type who really surprises people. He is a player. I have seen him play often in high school. I think our fans will grow to really like him. I would not pre judge him. Just check what he did against nationally ranked St. Patrick (The Patrick school) last season. He made first team All State for a reason.

It's an observation not a criticism at this point. I don't want this to turn into that I'm somehow bashing a kid who just stepped on campus. Just surprised by comments by people who went to the practice that thought he would contribute anything this year and for the sake of those who are relying on our "scouting reports" figured I'd provide a little reality check. I'm all for being optimistic, but, come on, let's be a little real here. Hopefully he'll be a workout warrior and transform his body and compete for minutes In time.

Did not mean to criticize, Really? You called him the most shockingly overweight player that you have ever seen.....Like Ever ! That's a B1G criticism and I'm certain it is nonsense, unless you just started watching basketball a few days ago. I've seen him on film at Rutgers practices...he has a big frame.

I didnt mention it in my summary because i am under the impression that this is normal for him

I can tell you that he didnt look like he was struggling to keep up

So if you want to say he doesnt have the prototypical college bball body type for a guard...no argument. but i dont know how you landed on out of shape from that practice since he was keeping up with his peers just fine

My 2 cents

Somewhere Hot Plate Williams is smiling that someone thinks Bullock took his title.

To clarify I meant at Rutgers not in the history of basketball so Hot Plate Williams and company can rest easy. By "ever" I mean in the last 33 years since I've been attending RU games. But I stand by my statement. Believe what you want (as long it's always positive of course because everything else must be nonsense.) I saw him Saturday on the court not on some old you tube clip.

Charles Barkley played his college ball with some heft. If Bullock is a third as good as Barkley, we all will be happy.
