No it wasn't. 6 points up with 24 seconds. Gano missed 2 chippies today. That's the game right there especially with an overwhelmed and ineffective Devito trying to pass at QB.
Sorry, but even the announcers sounded shocked. Kill the clock and leave them 10-yards further into their own territory. The fact that Gano has already missed an easy one, earlier, should've made that choice easy IMHO.

Why would you go for that FG on 4th and 1 from the Jets 17? First off, it's a dangerous play on a wet day that can have disastrous results and secondly, why not just go for it, as the Giants have been running the ball really well? A first down ends the game. Of course, I have no idea why Barkley just went down on the first down running play either. Lots of headscratchers in this one (and I have no rooting interest).
Even if you make it you're still giving the ball back to the Jets and a one possession game. How fast it got down the field they still would have had one play to go into the end zone. Running Was the right call there.... Seems pretty obvious to me

Wasnt the first miss 47 yards. Thats hardly a chip shot in the rain. That being said Gano should have made them both. Only the Giants could lose a game like this.

There was no protection on gano’s final kick.
That was part of why he missed

Dabol was terrible. Should have went for it on 4th down . And why he is electing to take the ball in overtime with a practice squad quarterback in bad weather ?? Completely ridiculous

I can’t go crazy over the FG decision. I don’t think Zach is taking them the length of the field for a TD if Gano makes it. And if Kayvon, who had a good game, doesn’t jump offsides, I’m not sure the Jets even have time left. At best they’re kicking a 64 yd FG.

Giants with 7 yards passing and -16 yards from sacks today while rushing for over 200. Rutgers playbook?

Last year the Giants rarely got blown out. This year they have multiple blowout losses.

Last year they would have eked out wins against the Jets and Buffalo.

The difference between the two years are a slew of injuries and terrible coaching in 2023. For a team like the Giants, that is devastating.

This year is over before Halloween. Critical decisions are now in front of them regarding trading players v. collecting compensatory pick if players aren’t resigned.

It's almost as if an offensive system based on playing it close, prioritizing rushing, minimizing passing isn't a sustainable system year over year?

Perhaps a Schiano kneel special a la Michigan State would’ve been better with 24 second left in the game? Just let the QB run around to eat time off the clock before going down. Get it down to 12 or so seconds and there is time for only play before a FG with the Jets having no time out…

How can there not be a better QB than Tommy DeVito available? Rutgers had no issue containing him in the dome two years ago. The only nice pass he threw was caught by Max Melton at the end of the game. DeVito was outplayed by Noah Vedral.

DeVito is never expected to play meaningful snaps- ever. And he was the cheapest walking body at the time...There are better out there but not as your number 3 and at minimum wage

We tried to open it up earlier in the system, but the OL was run over.

I think what has been proven to be unsustainable, is leaning heavily on running yards from your QB, especially when your QB's have histories of missing games. Now I don't think that was the plan at the start, but it became the plan, and now we are back in rebuild mode.

Can someone remind me just how bad Jones is? With all his faults, none of these stiffs could have gotten the Giants into the playoffs last season or won a playoff game.
I think Tyrod is OK, he's had a decent career, he looked OK last week, but yeah in my mind our season was over once Jones went down. And his injury of course was the result of an OL that had weak links to begin with, but then fell apart due to injury.

Not sure what effect, if any, Tyrod's injury has on Jones's timeline.

Tyrod's last good season was years ago.
His gravy days ended with an injury
He cant last as a starter imo

Maybe, but Gano generally hits that. Still don’t have a problem with it.

He didn't miss two chippies. First one was a 47 yarder (although NFL kickers usually make 47 yarders).

Why take the ball after winning the OT toss.
Can’t throw and you have an awful punter.
Yep, this too, especially since the Jets hadn't been moving the ball either and don't win the game on a FG in the opening possession of OT, which is probably the best they do - and if they go three and out it's likely the Giants get decent field position and win the game on a FG on the 2nd possession of OT.

If they're smart, none. The season is shot anyway.

Daboll is fortunate to have banked a ton of good will last year, as he’s basically given all of it back in ‘23. Horrendous personnel management and scared play-calling all season - the complete inverse of what won him COY last year.

Also, what an indictment on both he and the management that they didn’t have a contingency for an injury to Taylor today. On that turf, in that weather and given Taylor’s injury history, how was your Plan B a guy you don’t trust to throw to a WR? Parris Campbell should’ve been under center before DeVito. I also don’t believe Gano is healthy, which would make that final kick even more egregious.

Still, QB is the most important position on the team, need to have insurance. Brock Purdy was the 49ers #3 last year. Not every #3 is going to turn into Brock Purdy, but Tommy Devito struggled to hang 7 points on Rutgers two years ago, and the only reason they got that was the refs missed a flagrant hold on their RB Sean Tucker's running TD.

Who could they bring in at minimum wage? And how many reps did Devito get in practice this week?

I thought that what happened last year was that Barkley was back and really good early in the season. Barkley is a specimen when healthy - dude is always a threat to break a long run. When he went down early this year the team became one dimensional, and Giants OL was too injured/awful for pass heavy offense. NFL sucks because its a pass crazy league but OL cant block on half the teams. The run game sucks and the pass game sucks.

Giants are last in NFL for passing yards (155) and the Jets are next to last (164). Their OL are too often hurt

Well THAT was a STUPID decision. First....Saquon should NEVER have given himself up.....
So many frustrating decisions but for some reason Saquon choosing to fall down on that first down run rather than likely getting the first down and ending the game frustrates me the most.

Ok,
But what about the coaching decision to receive after winning the coin toss in OT.
That alone shows complete lack of awareness and judgement…. Worth firing him over imo.

and by some stroke of luck Jets get the touch-down, he would be crucified. (See Bill Belichik 2015 against gang green).

The Giants finished with -9 passing yards and were incapable of completing a forward pass…. Not remotely the same.
Reality of the game conditions takes precedence,
