OT: 2024 NY Mets Season Thread

Joel Sherman reports that the Mets DID make Alonso an offer last year before the trading deadline - 7 years, $158M. He obviously declined. Understandably so. The Boras philosophy is that if they want you to give up your free agency rights, they've got to overpay for that concession. We'll see how if works out for all concerned.

Mets are only one game out of the third wild card in an 8 team scramble.
I still think that Cohen should move the team to a waterfront stadium in Jersey City named Gil Hodges Stadium.
Then, maybe the curse will be lifted from your team.

Was down in Philly tonight. First time at the bank and it was a great ballpark with great entertainment outside at xfinity live. Wish the Mets had anything close to that. Also wish the Mets had anything close to the Phillies baseball players.
The Mets stink. Badly. Luchesi tried, was overmatched and in 3 batters too long. Poor managing. I don’t know what a grant helwig is. Don’t care to know. Hope to never see him again.
Vientos has a bat. Wish he had a glove. Thought Lindor had a glove, was wrong, wish he had a bat. I love Nimmo. Can’t knock him. Wish he was better. Marte can move on. Alonso is a .230 hitter with home runs sometimes and bad defense. McNeil is whatever. I don’t know what else to say. I love the Mets. But after seeing Philly fans enjoying life at xfinity live post bar fun situations compared to whatever citi field is it just bums me out. Gonna be a while

I’m going to assume that most fan bases are the same and that the combination of message boards and either long term losing or short term losing streaks produces this. Because otherwise it feels like this is a fan base populated with losers.

I still wonder how much of it is the gun.
That may be part of it as well as starters going only 6 innings max.
I’ve seen Seaver, Ryan, Gooden in great seats either behind the plate or between the plate and either dugout sitting in the first levels where you also hear the pop.
Ryan was the only one that was even close to a deGrom 102.

As much as I hate Philly sports teams I have to agree that they have a great setup there and their stadiums are a good time.

My thoughts:

1) With everyone healthy, Lucchesi is the Mets #9 starter. Maybe #10. I suspect this was a one and done.

2) I too don't know what a grant helwig is. Grant Hartwig is one of many interchangeable relievers at the end of the bullpen. The Mets have already used 25 different pitchers! You will see Hartwig again, but maybe not anytime soon.

3) Agree on Vientos.

4) Disagree on Lindor. He is a very good player. He is not a superstar. Problem is, he has a superstar contract, which unduly raises fan expectations, and will be an albatross around the neck of David Stearns for the next eight years.

5) Nimmo also is what he is. A good player with a contract that also hangs around Stearns' neck, although less heavily than Lindor's.

6) Marte cannot move on. No one will take him.

7) Agree on Alonso. He may rue turning down $158M for 7.

8) McNeil is a head scratcher. He came up as a hit machine with a magic wand. Then he tried to be a slugger, and was pretty good at it. Now he is neither.

9) Cohen will develop the surrounding neighborhood but it will take a while.

10) Your love for the Mets, and your frustration, is apparent. We all feel your pain.

Pittsburgh does too. They shut down the area in front of the stadium for weekend games and it's like a festival out there. Another great place to see a game.

Anyone watching the Mets game. going to commercial with like 2 outs a number of times.

New Mets fan fun game

Can Narvaez and Nido combine their batting averages and win the batting title

160 and 220 so far. Nido crushing it at 220 which should help the dynamic duo

Lindor batting below .200. Insane. Season is 25% done and he’s hitting this poorly.
Just now 1st and 2nd no outs and be strikes out on awful pitches.
Why not bunt him there? Advance the runners, 2nd and 3rd one out in a 1 run game. Who cares he’s the 3 hitter, he can’t hit

Isn't Cohen trying to get a casino license and build an entertainment complex and hotel where the chop shops were? It'll be better than anything around the Phillies ballpark I think.

Edwin Diaz was supposed to be a strength. Is this really going to happen again?
