OT: a good friend is STUCK IN CHINA

I’m just going to throw this out that making a big deal over every individual case of this virus is not helping. It’s a virus. Every year new viruses develop. Yes it need to be addressed by the country is freaking out as if this is the next Black Plague... every couple of years this happens. Whether is bird flu, sars, swine flu, measles, E. coli, etc every year almost it’s something.

respectfully is anyone really that surprised that the only state so far freaking out about this is California? Go figure....
Seriously, Cali is the only state???it is on the top of the mind of almost everyone I know in many states. Do I think it will happen to me, no...but I now sanitize my hands after I touch just about anything in public...
Something also seems very “off” with this one...

Cali is the only state taking any kind of action in the form of mass quarantines. It's top of mind a lot of places but more because of what it's doing to the stock market than actual health risks. As of right now outside of China there are less than 2000 documented cases of coronavirus in the entire world. In the united states the number is 14... the disease has a 2% mortality rate which is a bit higher than the coomon flu but nothing insane. Yes people are out of their minds for the way they are reacting to this. It is no different than any other year when there's a new disease that people freak out over than quickly forget once the virus has a vaccine. How many times lately have you heard anyone talk about SARS?

This will blow over from a health standpoint. what will keep it going is the political gain

There are not "less than 2000" cases outside China, there are roughly 6000. There are not 14 cases in the US right now, there are 66. The mortality rate is at least 10x higher than for seasonal flu.

To say that "it is no different than any other year" is absurd.

Well the center for disease control seems to believe differently. as sourced above. It's a strong virus but not anything that warrants the public health crisis that is occuring. Yes people should be careful but this really is no different than any other health scare any other year, the difference is Trump is in office and the Dems are blowing this virus out of proportion as their latest political stunt to bash the president. A vaccine is coming and will be available soon. Source is below. The world isn't ending the way people are making it out to be. This public freakout is simply just hurting the economy meanwhile giving Dem's an excuse to bash the president further.

Again, the CDC is no longer updating that site.

There are 66 confirmed cases in the US as of this morning.

There are 85,721 cases, worldwide. There have been 2933 deaths, which is an effective mortality rate of 3.4%.

That number was updated yesterday morning! What are you talking about? I literally work in the medical field selling vaccines and medical supplies to hospitals and dr’s offices. All week I’ve heard from dr’s how tired they are of the media overblowing this virus because now anytime someone comes in with a common cold they are convinced it’s coronavirus.... it’s February, the weather is cold, coughs and colds happen.

14 cases in the country with a virus that has a 2% mortality rate. You’re freaking out over something that almost 3,000 people globally have died from which is minimal in the grand scheme of things. For some perspective, over 3,000 people die every day from automobile accidents.... China has a population of over a billion people. High cholesterol is a far bigger problem than coronavirus. People are just putting their worry in the wrong places.

I’m not joking when I say if you really are worried about catching coronavirus start a daily dose of Chaga Mushrooms and you’re immune system will kill the virus the minute you come in contact with it. Or continue to watch cnn and msnbc and buy into this nonsense that’s being used to harm the stock market and bash the president. Ya’ll don’t think it’s a little ironic that in an election year all the sudden the yearly health scare is getting this kind of attention and harming the stock market the way it is? Over 14 total cases in the United States??? Use common sense friend

From your own CDC link:

"As of February 23, 14 COVID-19 cases had been diagnosed in the following six states: Arizona (one case), California (eight), Illinois (two), Massachusetts (one), Washington (one), and Wisconsin (one)."

You're bad at math, you don't understand statistics. If there are 3000 auto deaths every day, it's because several billion people travel by car every day.

If you continue to claim that there are only 14 cases of coronavirus in the US then you've proven yourself not worthy of the conversation.

Incidentally, "selling medical supplies" doesn't make you a member of the healthcare community. You've had no medical training. But thanks for clarifying your credentials - I'm sure everyone is now much more comfortable ignoring you.

14,19 it really makes no difference. Tell you what, I'm confident enough that I will bet you a year of premium that by June the public health crisis over coronavirus will be completely over and there will be less than 100 total deaths in the united states as a result of the virus. If you believe that warrants the type of freakout that is occurring we simply do not see eye to eye. You have no idea what my medical training is and although I'm not a Dr I would put my knowledge of medicine up against your's or any of the anchors on CNN any day any time.

I am one of those physicians and you're completely off on this. This is unlike most anything that I've encountered in my last 30 plus years of practice and as a microbiologist.

With SARs you developed a severe respiratory illness coincident with a large viral load. Like a crescendo and decrescendo if you got better.
With this illness you can have subclinical disease, especially those who are not immunosuppressed, and you can have large amounts of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic individuals behaving like " typhoid Mary". Many people with the influenza virus have predictable course and either partial immunity or more complete immunity so this is a totally different animal. And it's not easy to study since it jumped in from another species and some of our lab animals are not susceptible to the disease so it's not that easily studied.

by the way I'm not adverse to agreeing with your optimistic outlook that it's going to Peter out since I'm hopeful that with the warmer weather and with people more attentive to close gatherings and hygiene

When is the last time Italy used soldiers to keep people from leaving their towns due to a new disease? Soldiers, not just police. I have no idea, but this is the first time I can remember and im 55. Over reacting? Maybe.

What’s your opinion on this possibly getting better with more warm humid weather in the summer?

At least for now seems hopeful judging by what’s happening in the Southern Hemisphere. Australia, Brazil, Nigeria all cases were “imported” from other outbreak areas as far as I’ve read and the numbers haven’t ballooned for now. India with a humid climate in parts of the country for much of the year also not too many cases reported as of yet. These seem like hopeful signs.

Our weatherman #s actually hit the nail on the head in one of his posts where he referenced viruses on the whole tends to disseminate more in colder weather where large gathering of people are more frequent and mucous membranes tend to be drier and secretions get more inspissated.
My staff is on a verge of a nervous breakdown with patients wanting their prescriptions many months in advance.

Another problem is patients overcrowding the emergency rooms which is one of my pet peeves and I'm sick and tired of getting six texts a day from M--- about moving patients out. It's a universal text but for 10 years I actually did some work for the hospital as a liaison and quality care trying to help them get their length of stay down and it's like banging your head against the wall.
hospitals are no places for sick people.

As for the stock market selloff, the initial uncertainty with the virus certainly started the downward trend but now you’ve got investors who have been chomping at the bit to take profits for the better half of 3 years who now have an excuse to do so. Everyone knew the bull market was nearing it’s final stages, it was just a matter of when that end would come. Now everyone will be eyeing that next market entry point

So no, the market selloff isn’t completely driven by people who think global civilization is going to grind to a halt.

Yea that’s what I’m getting at...that even this new one might be behaving similar to other known ones with regards to hotter humid weather like we see in flu judging by what’s happening to date in the Southern Hemisphere and a humid place like India and that’s a hopeful sign.

We've already seen plentiful examples of your "medical training".

And for what it's worth, I'm a licensed EMT, a certified EMT instructor and CPR instructor and have been for many years. So that's my medical training. Still want to compare?

@RUfubar has, I think, effectively addressed the rest of your nonsense from the perspective of qualified medical professionals.

I've just heard it over and over from my clients. I'm not disagreeing that this is a different animal and needs to be addressed however I do not buy into this world health crisis that the virus is being made out to be. Time and time again we discover these vaccines and the reports coming out of the Isreal Lab have me optimistic. I'm familiar with that lab and their products and imo they are extremely credible. Not to mention I know there's a ton of labs working on this very vaccine including the one for the company I work for. I do believe people should be more careful of course and start taking antioxidants if they are exposed to the general public. The Chaga Mushroom is my personal go to

I would just caution the accuracy of the 50-60 cases currently in the US right now. People with respiratory distress and negative flu tests are literally being sent home from ER’s all over the county with no test because they have no travel history to China.

How do you consume the Chaga? Tea? Where do you purchase it?

Have been reading quite a bit about it recently. Thanks

There is a lot we don't know about this particular Corona virus strain and vaccines Don't happen overnight especially since we don't know a lot about its interactions with the immune system. There's always been interest in developing Corona vaccines but most of them petered out because of other priorities. historically Corona virus infections are like "meh" not too sexy.
own personal prediction is optimistic in that -more so than any expedited vaccine appearing tomorrow, that like the swine flu, it'll continue to exist in our community in some episodic low-grade fashion even until next viral season And thereafter. And it will eventually be forgotten like the poster says until the next pandemic comes around of the next bug that decides to jump species. But for now it's some serious s*** and at least driving any grounded physicians nuts at this time

I do capsules that I order off of Amazon.
Amazon product ASIN B002WIZEY0
But you can do tea as well. I'm not a big fan of the taste of the tea so I switched to the capsules. It's funny being in my field working with Dr's of Western medicine and I mention I take Chaga each morning and how many have started using it themselves. The only side affect you will experience is the desire to exercise. I really cannot say enough good things about Chaga.

Speaking of subclinical:...

Some (14% in some reports from China) CV patients showing "reinfection." They are declared well and leave hospital but then they turn-up sick again - Like earlier SARS/MERS the new corona might be biphasic.

Explainer: Coronavirus Reappears in Discharged Patients, Raising Questions in Containment Fight

"SHANGHAI/LONDON — A growing number of discharged coronavirus patients in China and elsewhere are testing positive after recovering, sometimes weeks after being allowed to leave the hospital, which could make the epidemic harder to eradicate...Experts say there are several ways discharged patients could fall ill with the virus again. Convalescing patients might not build up enough antibodies to develop immunity to SARS-CoV-2, and are being infected again. The virus also could be "biphasic", meaning it lies dormant before creating new symptoms...Song Tie, vice director of the local disease control center in southern China's Guangdong province, told a media briefing on Wednesday that as many as 14% of discharged patients in the province have tested positive again and had returned to hospitals for observation."

This is the same with the common flu. About 10% of flu patients end up returning to the Dr if they don't feel better or still have symptoms. Have you ever been sick before, gone to the Dr who gave you something that didn't work and had to go back? I just did this last year with a case of strep throat... For the love of god just be careful, take antioxidents and you will be fine. People are acting like this is a national crisis and thousands of american's are dying every day. "JUST RELAX"- Aaron Rogers

A letter written to jama buy some Chinese physicians reported on a few I believe it was four cases with modern illness and they were all health care professionals who were sent home subsequently tested negative times two and then several weeks later retested yet again and tested positive and this was confirmed with two different kits made by two different labs.
Now that doesn't mean that they were reinfected since they were in quarantine and that wasn't likely to happen at home and it doesn't mean they were doomed to get ill again. I compared it to the herpes virus which can go latent and reappear or not based upon one's cell mediated immunity and other factors that allow for dormancy. Like herpes particularly in the male, the initial infection can be severe and subsequent outbreaks minor but nevertheless the patient is contagious and shedding virus.

I think much of what's going on is a matter of perspective as well.
If you're a young healthy person and you come down with another flu-like illness or a minor symptoms or even moderate symptoms and miss some time from work and you have no close relatives or friends who r vulnerable then to you it's not that big of a deal in that it's just another viral infection that you'll recover from.

On the other hand if you deal with a lot of people who you count on or loved ones who are infirm then the last thing you need is yet another viral infection outside of our seasonal flu that's going to put your loved ones in the hospital or in the grave sooner than you'd expect it. It's the human condition to fear the unknown.

Were all gonna die! over the past 20 years can ya start naming the Viruses, diseases and other forms of demise to the Word Population that have been broadcast by the media and social media platforms???
Bird Flu? West Nile? Zika? Lime? Ebola?
The Panic is only because we believe the Hype then hype it up a notch like this thread!
I think Im gonna go to Chinatown now and go get some Chinese food. I'm sure my chances of dying in a car accident are exponentially greater than me getting the newest Virus being hyped by the media and everyone else today.

I still think at least some of this reinfection stuff is due to the flaky nature of the tests. People with clinical disease often test negative, sometimes multiple times, before eventually getting a positive. That said, there are more and more reports of this "reinfection" showing up and if it turns out that this is a common part of the disease, that's not good...to put it mildly.

Regarding the impact of warmer weather...it will probably help. I don't think the reasons are very well understood but most seem to believe it's a combination of things. The virus particles don't remain viable as long when temperature/humidity is higher. Our immune systems might be more vulnerable during winter due to, maybe, lack of sunlight/vitamin D, plus the drier air makes mucus membranes more susceptible. Also people are cooped up indoors which makes spread easier. However, for something like seasonal flu - those start circulating in the fall and peak in winter. By the time spring rolls around a significant part of the population has been exposed and contracted the flu, so the number of people available to be infected is decreased. Herd immunity. For this virus, it's late winter/early spring but since no one has been exposed the entire population is vulnerable. This might work against the seasonal trend of viruses in general. Maybe it works out so that the size of the epidemic is smaller than if this had hit us in the fall, like it did in Wuhan. This could spread out the epidemic, reducing the impact on health services and giving more time to develop a vaccine (for the next cold season) and produce any antivirals that seem to be effective.

There is a lot we don't know about this particular Corona virus strain and vaccines Don't happen overnight especially since we don't know a lot about its interactions with the immune system. That's basically what I had read in the Atlantic recently and here's another article saying the same.

From the article:

‘Cold and flu and COVID-19 season’
Other experts have asserted that the virus may simply become a permanent part of illnesses that transpire as a result of cold weather, like the common cold or the flu.

Marc Lipsitch, a Harvard epidemiology professor, told The Atlantic that if the virus continues to spread and be as severe as it is now, “cold and flu season” could become “cold and flu and COVID-19 season.”

Other infectious disease experts echoed a similar sentiment.

"We know respiratory viruses are very seasonal, but not exclusively," William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University, told CNN. "One would hope that the gradual spring will help this virus recede. We can't be sure of that."

Regardless of whether the coronavirus is likely to be a winter phenomenon or not, "this is going to be with us for some time — it's endemic in human populations and not going to go away without a vaccine," Amesh Adalja, an infectious-disease expert at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told Business Insider.

Did any of the other diseases go pandemic? Did they cause a 4,000 point drop in the Dow in 1 week? Did the CDC offer their highest level of warning for any of the other diseases?

Meanwhile Trump has cut the EPA and CDC . One due to Global Warming (check with scientists Einstein it exists)... the other due to blatant arrogance and stupidity!

Question: What do NJ,WA, OR and CA have in common? That's right: Covid-19.

Bemused and pissed off at this administration's attempts to constantly make Night = Day!

WTF is Fake News...oh Double Speak.
Then you (Trump) lied again cause you read the book or did you just watch the movie from the 50's with Edmund O' Brien?

was this the guy from about a month ago that received an untested vaccine for another disease and "got better"? cant find articles from back then
I believe it was said on the news that it was a woman in her late 50s with serious medical issues.

From CNN article:

The coronavirus patient who died in Washington state went to the hospital "with serious respiratory issues," according to an EvergreenHealth Medical Center statement.

The first US coronavirus fatality was a "medically high-risk patient in her late 50s," President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Saturday.
