I get (or used to get) ShopRite store baked turkey breast. ShopRite used to bake an actual turkey and it was great. I bought some today and they now bake jelly turkey. The perfectly shaped oval that is produced by jellafying turkey from many birds, adding sheet rock and other iky spices and cooking it to become a solid. Why did ShopRite change to jelly turkey? It can't be that much more profitable can it?

Pretty simple. Your average consumer would rather pay less for manufactured turkey product.

I don't think the average consumer realizes it is processed turkey. The black bear turkey is processed too that is why I switched to store baked. When sliced a real turkey breast will break apart easily and is a little drier. The processed turkey breast holds together like a quality latex paint.

The food being sold across the board is more than a little troubling. Unfortunately, its a win win for the grocery stores, since they've now realized that people will pay triple for organics. So you either overpay for crap with the group who doesn't care and just wants a "low" price, or if you care enough to do something about it, you overpay for quality.

I don't mind natural processing, but once they start injecting synthetics, forget it. No matter how plump, they just don't have the same flavor.

seriously. Not to mention when you "ping" them with your thumb/index finger you don't get that "thump" sound you would expect from a of real plump obtrusion.

Gelson's, a high end chain in SoCal, use to hand carve the fresh roasted turkey right in front of you. Pay more, but well worth it.

OK, last comment in this thread and then I am going back to drinking....stop complaining and learn how to "pluck" a Chicken [cheers][banana]

I think trying D & W or Boar's Head or Black Bear (as suggested above) would be a good idea. Their turkey is not jelly turkey. You might also want to try a different supermarket; not everyone does what Shoprite does with its store turkey breast.

All Shop Rites aren't the same. Shop Rite is a co-op of Wakefern. So if you want to complain about you local Shop Rite please say where you are talking about. Shop Rite stores are owned by different families. They "own" certain territories. Your store will be similar to others close by but have no relation to all Shop Rite stores. The ones by me are Brown Family and McMenimen. Both are fabulous

they probably gave you the carolina or marvel turkey which is processed and passed it off as shop rite...buy the black bear or dietz and watson next time

Just not a fan of black bear , boars head is some much better ( In my opinion). Any reason shop rite doesn't carry?

Yes (I'm back, sorry) Shop Rite is a Co-op. Wakefern Is the parent buying entity, Wakefern is made up of MANY Shop Rite Owner Groups who have autonomy over their individual store groups , but try to come together (and they do very effectively) to ban together and create scale and limit competition .

To answer your specific question. Boars head has specific criteria by which they will sell. or NOT sell out. Wakefern years ago said "ok...we'll establish out own Private Label Brand".....hence the birth of Black Bear. Get it?

You may still see some geographic brands on shelf across the owner groups. But in general Wakefern drives the bus.

They remain a MAJOR player in the NJ/NY Grocery business and have survived and thrived while most have not. They have beaten back Grand Union, Acme, Stop n Shop, A&P, Pathmark, Foodtown, Wegmans, and Walmart and Target......leaving Kings to bite at their ankles (although they actually supply Kings now too)

That was quite a thorough answer

I would have just said, "because delis don't carry every brand of meat."

Yours is much more insightful : )

Try BJ's. They have different brands as mentioned D & W and also I believe Wessley farms, something like that. All I know it's $5.99 lb and definitely not jelly turkey

Shop Rite in Hillborough started carrying Boars Head about 3 weeks ago. Infinitely better quality.

Boars Head is drek. Buy your own whole turkey or bone in turkey breast , roast it and slice your own. Much, much better and cheaper. If you buy a whole turkey, there's enough scraps left to make a good chunky turkey salad, in lieu of tuna or chicken salad.

Stop screwing around and find a place that sells Boar's Head Oven Gold turkey, problem solved!

I heard from the MILFs at the deli in Hillsborough that the Shop Rite in town now sells Boars Head meats. Used to that Stop and Shop had BH, but now that it closed, I guess Shop Rite picked 'em up.

I dont understand why we dont bake a turkey more often than Thanksgiving and xmas.....MARVELOUS to eat...cheap to buy(at least here in Fla) and easy to bake,,,,,I am guilty too....

on another note dont you find the deli people to be the nastiest people around...at least the Hillsborough Shop Rite...they sneer and talk under their breath when you ask to have the meat sliced thin. WTF they want to slice it thick..the pre sliced stuff that they put out is always so thick and garbage..ham like rubber..so lazy

I've always thought of a turkey as something that takes forever to bake, no?

yeah I would love turkey more too but it does take like 4-5 hours to bake a very large one and then you have to defrost so it becomes a project. Some people deep fry it and its done quicker.

To me, deep frying turkey misses the point, which is that turkey is a very healthy alternative to beef. Perhaps it makes sense to bake a turkey breast rather than the whole thing -- of course, that's hard on people who like dark meat.

BTW, I couldn't watch the game -- had to go to the office -- and it was a lot of following the game just by refreshing the game thread.
