OT: Pork Roll, Egg & Cheese

Am I the only one who calls it a Kaiser roll, or just a roll? I actually had to look up what a hard roll is to discover it's the same thing. Apparently the name "hard roll" came into existence during World War I so we wouldn't use the word "kaiser." Do you guys also say freedom fries?

In much of eastern New York state — New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and the Adirondacks — and throughout New Jersey and Connecticut, Kaiser rolls are known as "hard rolls", and are staples of delicatessen and convenience stores.

I'm sure White Rose makes an outstanding pork roll sandwich. I've been there plenty over the years, but only for burgers! Funny thing about Bagel Express and LS&D.....we are talking about East Brunswick, but both places are actually in Milltown.....being on the west side of Ryders. :)

Same. Have only had the burgers but will give the egg, pork roll & cheese a try
IMHO the place is not the same since it was sold about a year ago.

Yeah I saw that too. I've lived in NJ my whole life and both of my parents moved here from NYC, yet I never called it a hard roll.
Could it be another North/South Jersey divide like Taylor Ham/Pork Roll? I slung pork roll, egg and cheese sandwiches for 2 summers in the 1980s at a beach grill in Manasquan, and I have no recollection of ever hearing/saying Kaiser roll. Before that, my daily breakfast while working at a car wash was a buttered hard roll from Welsh farms. Maybe I was taught wrong?

I've never really called it a kaiser roll either actually, growing up we just called them rolls for short.

I grew up on Long Island and moved to NJ when I went to RU in the 80s. I never heard it called a Kaiser roll while growing up on LI...always just a roll or a hard roll, like a buttered roll or 2 eggs on a roll. I always thought it was called a hard roll due to its crustiness on the outside as opposed to those little soft dinner rolls.

I had the same thought. Grew up in So Jersey and it was always "hard rolls". When I got up to Rutgers, North Jersey to me, it was Kaiser rolls.

A cup of coffee and a buttered hard roll were the choice of most medical students at the 8 am lecture at Rutgers in the mid 70’s.

I always called it a roll or round roll. Never had a problem in anyone knowing what I meant .

Sometimes I like my breakfast sandwich on a Portuguese roll
