With all the recent rain that's hit Jersey, is this wind a threat to some trees? Is it that level?
Unrelated question, how early do I have to get in line for Dock's happy hour on a Sunday or Monday? By 3?
I doubt it for healthy trees. Diseased trees that should have been cut already are definitely at risk.
same here although the winds picked up and we had a quick shower but sun is back out
Docks Oyster HOuse has one of the best happy hours around! Usually the line starts forming outside about an hour ahead of opening. I have never gone in the summer so hard to say when you need to be there but in the winter on a Friday I have shown up 10 minutes before opening and was able to get a seat.
I was there month or so ago and talking to some folks at bar waiting for table they told me happy hour specials are a must. They also told me not to tell anybody else about it. I know it starts at 4.
From what I saw, there weren't on 1st as usual but may be some a block or two further back. Anyone on the beach is likely getting sand blasted.
Sun still on and off but wind is picking up. I'm guessing 20 with gusts 25-30.

Same here in Wall--wind gusts picking up. My bellweather is fire dept calls for wires down or trees on wires. So far nothing on that front, but I just jinxed my day. . . . . .
We had a wire down Tue on Stockton Lk Blvd. Seems to be an annual event.
We usually go once a visit, but we're in Sept and we get there 10-15 minutes before opening and have zero problem getting a good spot at the bar. Great, great happy hour.
Tornadoes are definitely possible, still, which is why the watch is up for most of the region north of 276/195 through late tonight. Big storms now moving into NWNJ and this line will likely hammer most of us even along 95 and towards the coast, from maybe 5-8 pm. While most won't get over 1", in some locations folks will get 2-3" where the heaviest cells set up, which is impossible to predict. With high wind gusts of up to 50 mph and saturated soils, lots of trees/power lines down already in EPA and expect to see at least some of that in CNJ/NNJ. Airport delays are significant (2-3 hours) for the NYC/NNJ airports and there's a ground stop in Philly and DC right now.

Agree. It's coming through No. Plfd. right now and just rain, with little or no wind. No thunder and lightning. On radar, it looks like the line broke up some. I'm okay with that, BTW.
Nope, not looking as robust as forecast, at least for most of NJ (outside of NWNJ earlier). I've had enough rain, lol.
Edit: Good news: the tornado watch for most of the area (under NWS-Philly, i.e., everywhere except NENJ/NYC/NY which is under the NWS-NYC) was just canceled as the NWS acknowledges that the squall line is no longer as robust as originally forecast - I'll be surprised if the NWS-NYC doesn't do the same soon for their counties. We'll still see some rain and wind, but the severe element is now unlikely.

Ridiculous because of a little bit of wind and rain. Name the lot of areas that had issues TODAY. Soft and weak move in case there "might" be trouble because of a windy rain storm.
Don't think I have ever been to the OC boardwalk. How does it compare to Seaside Heights, Wildwood and Point Pleasant Beach in terms of size? I would imagine, OC is the most family friendly.
Hindsight is always 20-20. At the time the decision was made, the forecast from the NWS and every service out there was for 1-2" rain for most of NJ, which, could have led to localized flooding given how much rain had fallen recently, and along with wind gusts to 40-50 mph, could've easily led to many downed trees/power lines (especially given the saturated soils already in place from earlier rains), plus there was a legitimate threat of tornadoes.
The fact that most of that didn't materialize for 90% of NJ doesn't mean it was a bad decision - it simply means that the forecast was wrong for most, which happens sometimes, although it wasn't that far off, as 1-2" of rain and plenty of downed trees did occur for the Lehigh Valley, the Poconos, NWNJ (Warren/Sussex mostly) and much of the Hudson Valley. In the risk management world, one usually errs on the side of safety, as the downside of being overprotective is low, while the downside of not taking precautions can be quite severe.
You're simply off base on this and should know better. Of course it looks dumb in hindsight, but not given the forecasts they were given.
BUST of epic proportions today. Just shows how truly awful these models are. Completely useless most of the time.
I prefer OCNJ boardwalk over all of the others, from a family perspective: it's about 9 blocks of boardwalk with tons of shops, food shacks and actual restaurants, games, etc, along with two large amusement areas kind of just behind the boardwalk (and a water park). As a teenager, Wildwood and Seaside were the best. Point Pleasant doesn't compare to the other 3, IMO.
Not a very good forecast today for most of our area, but the NHC forecast for Debby was superb, from inception, through landfall in FL, through the stall in SC/GA with incredible rainfall forecasts verifying and finally to the quick trip up the Apps from NC through New England bringing flooding rains and tree damage with winds and some tornadoes.
