OT: Billy Joel, Rod Stewart to perform one-night-only show at Yankee Stadium

Guess I'm officially old and crotchety af, but I do not understand for the life of me why those vids are such a big thing.

I've accidentally clicked 'em before when just looking to play a song, and I just scratch my head wondering why anyone would want to spend their time watching some rando listen to music.

Goes right in the over-the-top self-indulgence bucket along with all the other "I did some basic everyday thing ... here's what happened!" cool stories. Don't care, douche!

Ok, I'm good now.
Pretty simple. Same mechanism as taking a child to an amusement park.. or a significant other to someplace they never have been but you have.. you see it anew.. experience it anew.. through them.

There's a related series of YouTubers doing videos of various types of neophytes experiencing various foods.

- an Italian eats Carrabas or Olive Garden or pizza chains

- English schoolboys eat Wendys.. or English father tries Southern biscuits and gravy

- Afghan tribal elders try American steakhouse

etc etc

I get that, and I get people's need for affirmation. Don't so much understand doing it through random nobodies, some of whom are clearly faking/acting, on the internet. Mostly just surprised how big it is - get flooded with those things every time I look for any kind of music. I remember it used to be mostly voice coaches or music industry types (more like your food examples), now it's just anyone with ears.

No big deal, trends don't appeal to everyone.

Yes, I’ve been watching the music “reaction” videos on YouTube for a number of years. It’s interesting to see their reactions to songs from 40, 50 or 60 years ago. Sometimes I actually get irked at some of the older people who comment on the reactions. Some get cranky and write stuff like , “how can you not know this song” or “how have you not heard of this band? “ My thought is if there were older people reacting to new music today, how many would know anything about the songs or artists? The vast majority of the younger people who react to the older music are very thoughtful and interested.
Apparently the one performance that all reactors are amazed by, makes me laugh my head off. It was a Midnight Special performance of "Hokus Pocus" by Focus back in the early 70s. The show was running late and Focus was asked to cut their hit song short. Instead, they refused and said they would do the entire song but in double time. It's the only standing ovation in the history of the Midnight Special.

These two "the College Students" reactors drink and review songs. But they actually have some insights on what they hear for the first time on some of the videos. This video they were drinking a little too much and didn't know what was coming.

Heh heh.

The one on the left had to take a mental health break

Another popular couple looks like they are splitting and the female isnt doing vids anymore

That poster never seems happy with anything. Best to ignore.
Can't speak to this, but he's actually correct here. I've seen Billy Joel live 10 times, starting in 1994 at Veterans Stadium with Elton John and ending with a show at MSG in 2024. His energy level may be fine if you've never seen him before, but there has been a significant drop-off in the last 5 years or so.

He's actually probably not correct. He saw him one time pre-covid and said he just sat at the piano. Billy Joel is 75 years old. He is not in the same physical condition as Bruce Springsteen. Maybe he was not feeling well on that particular night. That happens, especially to people who are 70 and older. But as usual, T2K extrapolated into a generalization of not going to see fossils, which his usual negative world view to crap on things that he does not like. Maybe T2K fails to realize Billy Joel plays the piano? 🙃

Saw Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks in Phoenix on 12/8/2023. This was worth the price of admission alone. Energy was fine.

IDK, energy level seems fine.

Final MSG show in July, doing Start Me Up channeling Mick.

We Didn't Start the Fire, Uptown Girl

You must have caught him on a bad night. I've seen him 2x per year during his msg residency, he was always active and energetic. I'm seeing him again in August at Met Life Stadium with Stevie Nicks.

I love it.
I remember being 12 years old and learning all about the Manson and his girls
When I heard about that film I was like.. okay.. yeah.. another Hollywood is in love with itself films... but it lived up to the hype.

My point was simply that Billy's energy level in concert is nowhere near what it was. I've definitely noticed a major decline these last few years. Ice actually decided that I probably won't pay to see him live anymore because I don't want my memory of him tarnished.

That's fair. But the same is true for Bruce Springsteen's energy level. No more jumping off the piano, sliding across the stage on his knees, crowd surfing, etc. It's a choice of remembering when a favorite artist at their peak, or enjoying the aged, current version of that artist. Saw the Scorpions a few years ago, and some of the band members are older that Billy Joel-hard rock band that was very lively on stage at their peak. We still enjoyed the show.

Does “energy level” matter that much? How does he sound? I don’t go to concerts to see people move around or listen to them yell . I saw Elton John a few years ago. He sat behind the piano, would occasionally waddle out and say something and then waddle back to the piano. It was a terrific concert because his singing and piano playing sounded excellent.

Excellent point. I used to think one had to be close to the stage to enjoy the concert. We sat in the nosebleed seats for Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks, and it was fantastic. Sound was great, and the video monitors showed everything well. For some bands like Tool, the experience is better at the back of the arena because the video and light show are better further away. For some bands/artists such as Springsteen and heavier bands, the crowd energy is definitely higher up close to the stage.

Tarantino!
He rarely disappointments
If you love Tarantino films do not read the rest of this comment. It may ruin some of them for you.

I have found.. in so many of his films, he, Tarantino, is like a ventriloquist speaking his words, his dialogue, thru all the characters mouths. That is, all the characters are HIM. And once you think that.. you see it everywhere. That was where Once Upon a Time.. surprised me. He may have grown quite a bit.

There are other media types who did the same.. David Milch for example.. NYPD Blue, Deadwood.. don't get me wrong.. they entertain.. they are famous for their dialogue for good reasons. But it is the same with some big name actors... they essentially play themselves in every film. The Rock, for example.. John Wayne.. Brad Pitt.. they are always themselves... and we like them,, and that is why they keep getting jobs and we keep wanting to see them.

But have you ever seen a TV show.. sometimes with the name of the star in the title.. where the big star is in every scene? They, mostly, don't work. Then you have successful shows of similar vehicle.. a main star.. that works because the other characters have their own identities, their own stories.. and where it relates to Tarantino.. their own voices. Seinfeld for example. Named after the star.. but the other 3 characters always had their own story lines... Seinfled was a character in THEIR story much of the time instead of them serving to advance Seinfeld's story.

In the cases where I have seen Tarantino characters speaking his lines like he is talking to himself, arguing with himself, flirting with himself... I dunno.. it just bugs me.

The sound up front is often not the best since the amps and such are projecting out and over (and often from suspended speakers). Even when people record gigs the people up front often have the worst sound compared to people further back
