OT: Californian icon has died.

Looks like the weather has taken a toll on the 1,000 year old tree called The Sequoia "Tunnel Tree" in Northern California. With all the rain the past few days the tree that had a tunnel carved in it's base 137 years ago has collapsed. RIP big boy. Sorry don't know how to post a pic.

But yea, the tunnel tree will be missed. For anyone who hasn't been to that area, try and get there. It's beautiful.

My nephew was just there last year. Didn't realize its actually on private property and you have to pay a fee to walk through it.

We saw that ages ago, when my folks bundled all 3 of us into our '68 Chevy Wagon and we did a 3 week trip out west. What a shame.

We saw Grant's tree / Sherman's and a ton of trees that were nameless.

Interesting story about the Sherman tree.
It was originally, named after Karl Marx... by a group of communal "hippies" / "intelligencia": the Kaweah.

Damn shame they carved a tunnel through it; just a dumb thing to do to one of the wonders of the natural world, in my opinion. Still, absolutely incredible that it survived in that state for 137 more years.
