Its been 9 months and getting a whopper is about as easy a thing you can still do.
Not sure how old you are but when you've worked your a$$ off your whole life, retire, and then get locked out if living...it sucks and these years are precious.

Its all about balance. There is a way.
why lock out ? Use common sense and go early in the day... enjoy your life with your family and loved ones... You wear a mask... you keep social distance...you do everything they asked and they have all failed but funny those state and DC leaders are living ok it seems... best is they ignore their very own safety declarations ... Pathetic pieces of garbage...Now we begin the real game... when where and who first...

If he said "by January" I might agree. He didn't, he said "between now and January," which is ambiguous to me. The reality is we're debating useless minutiae. I'd much rather get the thread back on track, but that's looking difficult with so many non-scientific posts being made, which could be made in CE board threads. Here's an attempt...

Was great to see a Japanese report showing that 98% of recovered, infected COVID patients still have neutralizing antibodies for the virus, which essentially means they have immunity. This is consistent with previous reports from Chinese and US scientists, as per below and is very encouraging, especially if immunity lasts 10+ years, which it very well might (as implied by people having the SARS antibodies 15+ years after infection). That means there's a real chance of eliminating this virus.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/12/03/national/coronavirus-immunity-study/
I think you now need to be premium to be on CE board now here. I'm not premium here,
Anywho I tend to stay a way from this stuff anymore..and frankly am excited we are getting so close to be getting back to living.

You're barking up the wrong tree with the "worked your whole life and get locked out of living" line. Much worse fates can happen. This is really a walk in the park.

I follow all the rules. Legal or not. To me living doesn't involve carrying a face mask with you every time you step out. Kiv8ng means seeing a smile..which I haven't see in public in forever. But mostly, we wanted to travel. That's the lock out part.

It’s not 99.9, that’s total bs. Would you risk flying if 1-2 of every 100 on that plane would die before landing and another 5% (arbitrary positivity rate) would get sick before landing too?

close enough

COVID-19 SURVIVAL RATES (per CDC): Ages 0-19: 99.997% Ages 20-49: 99.98% Ages 50-69: 99.5% Ages 70+: 94.6%

you might want to check out all the people dying this year and it has nothing to do with Covid

How would you know what a walk in the park is now . You've been hugging the floor under your bed for almost 10 months .

Of course other things can be worse..My family has has its share or more....but they are not manufactured and controllable to a great extent. That's the rub.

Find your place in the vaccine line

lol....there are only 4 people below me on the line of 100

Based on your risk profile, we believe you’re in line behind 268.7 million people across the United States.

When it comes to New Jersey, we think you’re behind 7.0 million others who are at higher risk in your state.
And in Somerset County, you’re behind 248,400 others.

If the line in New Jersey was represented by about 100 people, this is where you’d be standing:

I hear ya on that. I retired in December, planning all kinds of fun things we have had to shelve, but with a wife and son who are highly immunocompromised and simply being "old" (58) myself, we decided to be very careful since 3/2, well before most. But we've made do and I've never felt it was unbearable.

We still had plenty of socially distant visits with friends outdoors and took lots of walks and short trips and I got to play a bunch of disc golf still, but yeah, it sucked in the big picture - missed my mom dying in FL and haven't seen my dad in FL since January and missed RU sports and going to shows and eating out and many other things. But I'm excited to get a vaccine and starting to live normally again.

Cool link, thanks, although it's very high level. Just by changing the answer for a 58-year old for the pre-existing conditions moves one from being behind 23MM to being behind 268MM.

I guess because I have a national forest and hundreds of miles of trails quite literally in my backyard.
Well , you do know Grizzly Adams would not be afraid of the virus but he would be VERY upset with you for being afraid of the virus. So I guess you would not stand a chance in hell of being his hero.

I see the same as you . People trying hard to re establish their lives. Smiles are far and in between and that is understandable. I am not traveling out of state at this time . My wife and I travel 3-4 times per year( normal years) I retired 6 years ago and I like you want to enjoy what we worked “ our asses “ off for... When you have the 18-45 age group flaunting protocols of safety in restaurants, bars and public gatherings. If people don’t see some hope soon we are gearing up for some bad and uncertain days ahead.

Question, if you did get the vaccine would you still be required to wear a mask? Would you still wear a mask?

I find your age 70-74 stat off but it’s not important... by age 70 and up the chances for disease and medical issues is much higher
. We septuagenarians accept that as fact but why give in to stupidity. It is time to crack down on those individuals ( younger) who violate and jeopardize the older over 55 age group.

Not afraid at all. Lucky to be able to adapt my life to best my family's chances of not getting it. Why would I not want to? Getting some lingering effects from a disease no one knows a damn thing about is a much bigger impediment to "living life" than any adjustment made this year.

And I've put myself in plenty of danger throughout the year ...with scars and crooked bones to prove it. Think 'ol Griz would approve.

This idea that people are living in fear is misplaced. A poster above already mentioned this, but it bears repeating. Deaths from catastrophic vehicular accidents or terror attacks are not contagious. Comparisons to behavior exhibited post 9/11 are not relevant to to the lack of contagion From such an event.

Skipping a holiday family gathering sucks. But it’s a sacrifice for the benefit of society to slow the spread of a lethal pathogen. Just as skipping out on a weekend visit to a restaurant or a football tailgate are sacrifices. This is a war time situation, except the invader can’t be completely defeated without a vaccine (and even then, it likely will linger for a period of time). This invader can be suppressed, through the daily minor inconveniences of mask wearing and social distancing, and the unpleasant sacrifices of forgoing in-person indoor gatherings. Indulging in those items means you are contributing to the spread, and is selfish. Adhering to public health measures isn’t fear, its a selfless sacrifice that will limit the fatality damage until a vaccine is available.

There are those bearing a heavier economic cost due to these sacrifices, and it’ the role of government to tide them over until we reach the other side of this pandemic.

Mask wearing and social distancing do not eliminate the spread of COVID. All else being equal (such as outdoor temperatures), those actions will slow the spread. Areas in colder climates which have better public health adherence still experience increases in case counts, hospitalizations and deaths, but those increases are lower than in states lacking public health discipline. This isn’t conjecture. It’s based upon actual case counts. Feel free to examine the link for per capita case counts over the last 7 days. The story is clear.

I’d also agree that the virus isn’t political. It attacks at the point of least resistance, regardless of gender or political affiliation. Those areas offering less resistance, as described above, are experiencing a more aggressive attack while those utilizing simple, known tools are faring better (though they are not unscathed).

they said you will still have to..its absurd if you think about it
Then WTF is the point of the vaccine. Makes no sense to me. You would think with the vaccine it would be a transition back to normal life meaning no masks.

Come on you are “young” 58 is middle aged... God what are you going to do when you reach 70-80+.. 😜

I believe the point of the vaccine is to prevent you from getting the virus.

I have the same place in line as you. Behind 268.7M people in the US. What cracks me up is I put in the age of my very healthy, fit 22 year old daughter. She continues to go out, hang with friends, attend outdoor parties and lives her life (dodged a few super spreader events). She's over a 100M people in front of me in line.

So the moral of the story, is the active and social 22 year old will continue loving life, get his/her vaccine first (if they decide that) and I'll be hunkered in my dungeon for another year while all of the US gets their vaccine.

There is a difference between a healthy 50 - 64 year old and a 20/30 something.

Retire at 58? Nice!

Pfizer coming up way short of initial production. Only half (maybe) of the 100 million doses will be available by the end of the year.

They’ll make up for it in January.

They have told the nation many conflicting things... but for some that’s not a problem...according to the estimate I’m in the first 28 million...and in my county there are 58 k ahead of me ... so that’s interesting but I expect some delays and changes when it starts.

Then why do you still have to wear a mask?
Eventually you won't have to. But lifting the requirement now would give all of the anti-mask people the opportunity to stop wearing them under false pretense of gotten the vaccine already. And yes, I fully believe people on this board would do that.

I believe there are many on the board who wear a mask in places or areas when a mask is necessary. The issue is even with mask wearing , distancing and sanitizing we still are a leading state for covid19.

It's that kind of dumb thinking that bars are closed but big box stores are still open.
