OT: Craig Littlepage, former Virginia AD and assistant coach, former RU Coach

True, maybe he is fit to be AD but definitely not a coach. He was worse than any coach we’ve had here other than Jordan.... and yes, Jordan was worse.
During the Littlepage tenure some fans had paper bags like Halloween masks over their heads as a sign of disgust.I don't recall that happening under any other head coach.

Littlepage was in Atlantic 10, think was worse than Jordan.

Absolutely – – no comparison. ‘Paige was less competitive against a schedule that was infinitely weaker. Also, he did not have to fight through the extraordinary issues with injuries that Jordan had to deal with, or the NCAA sanctioned defections because of the scandal.

He was the WORST. He took a strong program and made it terrible. He didn't like the players. He tried to micro-manage the game. He didn't like recruiting. We are just now recovering from the bad this good man did.

I was a season ticket holder during and through both coaching regimes and statistics not considered, Littlepage was a horror, a nightmare, and had absolutely no clue as to what was going on - on the court, both offensively or defensively. I didn’t attend 1/3rd of the games that Littlepage coached, in utter protest! I actually thought Jordon would “get it” at some point, but it never happened.
Two of the very worst coaches in RU History as far as I’m concerned. Statistics, in some instances may say otherwise but not to me.

By far the worst coach to ever set foot on the Banks and that’s not exactly easy. Football and basketball.

Littlepage was last every year, Eddie did not finish last his first year in AAC or whatever it was called.

I sat through every single Littlepage slaughter while in the Pep Band. We had double headers where the Women’s team outdrew the men.

It made for a tough time to support your team! I think that’s why Bob was so popular because it was a breath of fresh air to see the team play like, well, a TEAM!

As a student, we used to call him Littlebrains.

I think I could have done just as poorly.

Glad he had success afterwards.

So you and I were in the RAC when we beat State Penn to break our losing streak. I was one of the 50 fans present. Getting a good seat wasnt an issue back then.

Horrible Coach. The worst I have ever seen. Should have been fired after season 2.

I was there too! I think Mark Peterson had his best game. Wasn’t one of the PSU games when Eric Riggins was unstoppable?

Posted this in a thread on the football board. Littlepage's first hires for head coach of men's basketball and football were not good. He definitely got it right the second time with men's basketball, and it looks good for football:
I was looking at some University of Virginia history. As many know, Craig Littlepage, our former head basketball coach, who was not a good basketball coach, went on to UVa and become their AD from 2001-17.

UVa reached the pinnacle of success in men's basketball last night. They are also doing well in football. The head coaches of both programs were hired by Littlepage.

But his first basketball hire, Dave Letao, was not a great hire. In his final 2 seasons, UVa was 5-11 and 4-12 in ACC play.

Littlepage's next hire, Tony Bennett (terrific singer too), has been a home run. He started slowly his first two seasons, with 5-11 and 7-9 records in the ACC, but since the 2011-12 season, he has had UVa rolling.

Littlepage's first football hire, Mike London, was 27-46 (14-34) over six seasons (2010-15). Mike London had one winning season in 2011, and after that it was 4-8, 2-10, 5-7 and 4-8.

After the 5-7 2014 season, Littlepage said:
"It was important to see improvement in our football program this season," Littlepage said. "I've seen signs of progress in many areas. Through the staff changes made over the last two years, we are better at teaching the game and in the overall development of the student-athletes. We also continue to notice the commitment by this group of coaches and student-athletes to their academic and community responsibilities.
"The staff has re-focused its recruiting efforts to emphasize the need to attract student-athletes capable of helping the program compete at a high level in the expanded Atlantic Coast Conference," Littlepage added. "We are seeing many of these student-athletes on the field right now and the staff continues to have success on the recruiting trail. We will continue to support the program in their efforts to maximize their recruiting success.
"It's important for each of our sports programs to continue to show progress and follow a plan to compete for conference championships and in postseason competition to support the department's goals," Littlepage said. "I trust the plan Mike has in place and believe his leadership provides the best opportunity for Virginia football to be successful in the future."

London was fired after the following season. (I suspect Ash may be on the same trajectory).

Littlepage hired Bronco Mendenall (Salary $3.4 million (not a paltry $2 Million).
While Mendenhall's first season was terrible at 2-10 (1-7), he had them bowling in 2017, and got them to 8-5 (4-4) in 2018, with 2 losses in OT and a 20-16 loss to Indiana.

Where is this going? I don't know.[banana][banana]

Oh, here's where it is going. Rutgers is one coaching hire away from turning it around. I doubt Ash will get it done. But if RU is going to do it right, they better open up the checkbook and get an experienced coach. Mike Leach!

By the way, UVa basically negotiated a buyout and for London to resign, which saved them $500,000. If Ash ultimately leaves, one would hope RU will try to do the same with him.

Eddie was a better coach than Littlepage. At least Eddie won three Big Ten games. Littlepage was getting blown out by the likes of Duquesne and St. Bonaventure

I was there also, didn't Riggins go nuts?
Tom Savage won it for us. 87-88 season. If I recall we had a record 16 game losing streak going in. Only thing I miss about the Page Error is my youth. Getting 30 years back would be nice.

Have had Rutgers Football and Basketball season tickets every year since 1983 n(was out of state for a few years) The only time I lived in New Jersey and did not get season tickets for either sport was Littlepage's last season. I still dragged myself almost 90 minutes each way to make a bunch of games, though.Kevin McConnell (sp),the assistant AD even called me personally to see if my ticket application got lost in the mail.We must have spent a half-hour talking about the state of the basketball program. Littlepage made Eddie Jordan look like John Wooden. It was terrible. There was one game against George Washington, I think, that was a Saturday afternoon and it was so boring, you could hear anyone in The RAC who sneezed or coughed,no matter where they sat.

Littlepage was the worst. He put restrictions on Lloyd Moore which killed our season before it really started. Most of our losses were over by halftime. We were often getting destroyed by halftime. It was much more embarrassing than Jordan who was down to only 6 or 7 scholarship players for many games.

Moore never lived up to the hype from the start. He was not a bad player just not the super star some had expected

I didn’t really follow littlepage’s Virginia career too closely . But it seems like he did well enough and I remember he was on the selection committee a few times . I guess only uva fans know . Yes , at Rutgers he was a horrible basketball coach. It just goes to show that you can be a pretty competent person but some situations may not be good fits or good for that person’s skill set.
I kinda feel Ash is going to have a nice career down the line after he’s finished destroying our football program.
