OT: Electric vehicles

You sure you’re not carrying over sentiment from the CE board? Over there, there‘s an abundance of middle-school clique-like behavior for sure. It’s trolling and counter-trolling and just a total waste of time (although entertaining at times).

But while I don’t generally agree with BS’s posts on this subject, they aren’t entirely without merit at times. I just think that arguments for EVs are a bit more meritorious than those against, in terms of environmental at least.

Maybe he’s just trolling. Maybe only mostly trolling. But again, an echo chamber sucks and is boring as all hell. A little gentle trolling never killed anybody, no?
Mildone, I have stated I am not against EV's at all! I just think the technology has a long way to go before they will be able to compete with ICE vehicles both on price and environmental issues. The ONLY reason EV's are able to compete with ICE in operating costs is because Biden has hamstrung the Oil companies from drilling and exploring for new oil in the U.S. If gas is around $2.00/gal. the argument EV's are cheaper to run gets less traction.

Interesting read. Sounds like a lot of people are opting for the transfer switch and plug in from the truck bed. Sounds like the cheaper option. Plus my house is 100+ years old so I don’t think it has 80 amp to spare w/o an overhaul.
I may have mentioned (and being sparse in my info so as to not feed the troll), we had a very long run of about 80 feet from our main panel to a sub panel of #2 Romex wire (1" plus diameter) to a 100 amp circuit, and then another run of 2 wire in conduit out to the garage. My main panel could not have been further from the garage. It was pricey, even with a friend doing the labor, but I'm fine with it, as whoever built our house skimped on outlets/electric in the garage.

We have not completed the work, but we have everything laid out for the electrician to wire everything. Me and the Mrs. ran the wiring ourselves, and we cleaned the basement in the process (long overdue and on a rainy weekend). See, this EV stuff has all sorts of benefits that haters will never know about?

Oil companies have been sitting on leases for a while. If they wanted to, they could be doing lots more drilling and exploring right now as we speak. They aren't hamstrung at all, that's a politically motivated exaggeration and of course oil companies are always happy to fuel the narrative since it deflects blame away from them.

Research it yourself (not via political talk shows or propaganda sites).

Wanna point fingers, point them at the oil companies for riding this highly profitable time while saving on expenses right now. Read up on the different in oil company profits between 2022 and a decade or two ago. You'll see the reality pretty quickly and it's not what you're seeing or hearing or reading about when people point fingers at government.

Except I don't blame oil companies and won't personally point fingers at them for doing what they're doing. Because we're a capitalist society. And oil companies are in business to maximize profitability for their shareholders, not cater to consumer's desire for the lowest gas prices. And for government to intervene with oil company profit-seeking would be too socialist for my tastes.

People want to see lower gas prices, they need to stop creating so much demand. The pandemic caused a lowering of gas prices for a while due to massively reduced demand. And oil companies responded by reducing production and exploration and sitting on leases.

OTOH, if you are for socialist governance, then perhaps you advocate for government control of oil companies. Do that and you'd see an immediate cut in gas prices because every politician across the country always wants to see lower prices for everything, especially prior to elections. Higher prices hurt politicians as much as consumers.

Didn’t ever say I hated the product or the industry. Have researched and found out it is not more environmentally friendly nor is it cheaper to run or own; in fact it is more expensive.
pointing out the negatives of a product is not harming you, why are you so defensive of this way worse product than ICE vehicles. What kind of cult are you in?
I must have imagined all the time and money I saved over the past 3 years since I bought an EV.

This is actually a good video that asks some important questions regarding lithium mining and the environmental impacts of EV's

Actually a pretty fair piece of journalism done by ABC. Truly shocking!

Sounds like our builders had similar thoughts. My panel is on the opposite side of the house with no sub panel. Had to run it though the ceiling of our finished basement. Fun time.

Rear-end isn't sure if it's a station wagon, fastback, stretch limo, school bus, trailer ...
It looks like a very expensive mistake. But no doubt some will buy it simply because it’s so expensive.

I confess that I find myself unappreciative of a lot of high fashion as well. I have this suspicion that the goal is to create something so ugly and expensive that it definitively signifies the sheer financial height of any person who would spend so lavishly on something so obviously unappealing. A kind of a “if I’d spend that much on something this awful, imagine what I’d spend on something worthwhile” kind of statement purchase.

it's a bad trend for sure. it's a new money mentality. need to show off by being conspicuous... that caddy is conspicuous. it is unspeakably ugly. like old citroens.

The Panamera never struck me as a great looking car when I saw them in photos initially. And the first gen cars look meh on the road, IMO. But in person, I think they look much better than in photos, especially the second gen cars which look great. Maybe that’ll happen with the butt-ugly Caddy, too.

We gotta keep this thread on topic. People are calling this thread weird and only surviving because it has morphwd into a general car discussion. This one was my fault.

My Lightning is on a rail car moving through Ohio, and hopefully Pennsylvania. I have my Norolk Southern tracking number and I have been calling their automated phone number for updates. It's like the Norad Santa tracker.

We don't GAF what anybody else thinks.

I had fun tracking the car carrier ship delivering my last car. It's pretty exciting stuff.

Having leases is one thing. Getting permits to move the product from the leased site through some other property is another thing. You need pipelines and roads to move the oil to market.

Pipelines are not a problem either:

This site does a balanced job of presenting pipelines and the need for them:

We have a bunch now, but as the second website points out, the future for them is less certain. Which makes sense as we try to transition to cleaner energy production. Will it mean petroleum products will become more expensive for a while during the transitionary period, probably. But again, this is almost certainly one of those pay now or pay a lot more later things.

I read this first and had no idea what you were talking about. Then, I saw it in the other thread.

Lol, unbelievable. And pretty sure the guy that started the complaint once made a thread asking how to sew patio furniture cushions. It was not as popular as this one.

It was pretty funny to see someone who obviously had no clue about the thread content complaining about it. Sad aspect of human nature is to tear down what we don't understand.

And I'm not immune. I have a total lack of understanding of people who worship other people or worship brands or behave cultishly about stuff. So I make fun of them all the time. 😀

If you’re talking about me idk wtf you are talking about?

Are they on track to hit 50% increase from 2021?
It's going to be close IMO. Production they have a shot. Deliveries probably not.
The 6 week Shanghai Covid shutdown during Q2 cost Tesla ~70-80k units. Without that, +50% y/y would have been a layup. Going into Q4, there are more tailwinds than headwinds. For the first time in years, Tesla is not cell constrained, so who knows what they're capable of without that limiting factor.

There's a reason this thread has legs. A global shift in transportation is kind of a big deal. Despite some nonsense and trolling, this thread has provided useful information and hopefully squashed some of the FUD about EVs.

And we have a lot of car guys on the board, most of whom are open to at least watching EV developments with interest.

The political butthurt will only get more hilarious over time!
