OT: Electric vehicles

It's ugly.

Lots of really cool cars have been ugly.

Hell, people thought the first 911 was ugly. And a Volkswagen. It wasn't until after a couple generations of design and engineering that it became (somewhat) visually alluring while, at the same time, being viscerally entertaining enough to kill drunk hockey players.

Now, people actually buy 911s to make themselves look better.

Lots of folks find 911s ugly. To me nearly every version of it, except for one divergent generation, has been a work of art. But beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder.

I’m sure some will find the cyber truck great looking. Those are the same sort of people who find me attractive. The same people who also enjoy gargling other people’s vomit. Thus, I can have no respect for their aesthetic sense or overall judgement. 😀

Think you are being short-sighted and overly critical. Here is why it will be bought:

Base model $39,900.

The three-motor model, which Tesla says will essentially teleport from zero to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds (!) with a top speed of 130 mph.

All Cybertrucks have an adjustable air suspension that can be raised or lowered on the fly and provides up to 16 inches of ground clearance.

the top-tier tri-motor setup should provide more than 500 miles on a single charge.

If one can get over the looks, it appears to have a lot of features that will make it a fun drive and off road vehicle.
If you can get all that for under 40k, it’ll sell itself. Just don’t see how it can be priced the same as a base RWD model 3.

I probably saw more than 2 dozen today and I may have seen more than a dozen every day for the last month. And they're not all Tesla.
Rivian, Lucid, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan Leaf were seen.
I generally see a lot of Ford and Kia EVs, plus Teslas. Not so many of the others, not that I'm looking, really.

My F150 Lightning delivery date was bumped to 10/29-11/4. I figured the car may have been dropped at my dealer today and they usually need a day or two to prep. I thought I saw my vehicle, but it was one nearly identical, but with a build date 2 days before mine. Hoping for my delivery this coming week!

>50% of my neighborhood owns a Tesla. And they circle jerk themselves about it in the neighborhood group chat. One guy got a new land rover and the neighborhood teslerati berated him for not getting a 2nd Tesla.

0% of my neighborhood owns a Tesla and I don't think I'll see anyone buy one in the next 10 years. In my neighborhood we're a conglomeration of United Nations & every major religion. There may never be a chat group.

You're quoting specs and price from the unveiling 3 years ago. Throw all of that out. No chance the base model is $39k. Motor config will likely be different as well. I'm going to guess there will be no rear wheel single motor CTs. Range is going to be dependent on energy density of 4680 cells which are evolving quickly. CT won't disappoint on range, features, and specs, but at this point all that remains a mystery.

Quick question for you and hope to not incite the peanut gallery- do you see Musk getting distracted by his Twitter takeover?

Quick question for you and hope to not incite the peanut gallery- do you see Musk getting distracted by his Twitter takeover?
Yes. There's too much attention on Twitter right now. He is basically overthrowing the entire leadership and will be rebuilding it without the top talent, who have been leaving since the announcement was originally made.

No. He's already running 4 companies, what's 1 more? Plus, Twitter is now a private company, so much less if a headache. 90% of his time is spent w/ SpaceX and Tesla and I wouldn't imagine that changes long term. I'd also be shocked if he stays on as CEO of Twitter. Musk attracts world class talent. He has a vision for what Twitter can become and he'll assemble a team of brilliant people to execute it.

you guys agree with this…..right?

And this is exactly the kind of thing we banned you from this thread in the first place. Back on the ban list.

Seeing as how this morning he retweeted a Santa Monica Observer (genuinely fake publication) story that Paul Pelosi was actually beaten by a gay guy that he picked up in a gay bar at 2AM, I'm gonna go ahead and say "yeah".

My take on Musk is that he's not actually leading any of these companies. There are enough competent and conscientious people on the payroll so as to sorta keep them moving forward, but his own capabilities are severely limited. He's basically a shill. The announcement that he was going to start pushing his own NFTs into the Twitter space pretty much supports that theory.

Do your neighbors have Adirondack Chairs in their lawn or upside down pineapples in their shopping carts?

If you were an investor in Twitter, the last thing you'd call the prior leadership is competent and conscientious.

I wouldn't bet against Elon. So who's leading these companies?

Last leadership got them $54.20 per share by not letting Musk off the hook. I think they were very competent.

Not sure you read the nft thing correctly. They aren’t pushing their own, they are allowing for NFTs and crypto payments to be imbedded in tweets. This would be an example of monetizing Twitter in a way the previous regime was unable to do which was one of the biggest knocks against them.

Think you have a different definition of monetize.

I don’t get it. It’s just a Tesla. It‘s a perfectly fine car. Nothing at all wrong with having one. But it’s also nothing to brag about.

OTOH, I think it’s weak sauce to brag about owning anything, any car, any boat, whatever. Get what you like and who GAF what anybody else thinks about it, good or bad.

First 500 miles update. Overall, the Lighting has been great. My biggest complaint is just too many electronics. My frunk and tailgate failed to closed once already. I just think it will lead to big $ repairs after the warranty runs out. I do like the power side mirrors and the 360 camera view. Makes parking a lot easier for a truck this size.

Yeah, I have zero interest in most of the electronics automakers are cramming into cars these days. I want a car, not a gadget. Spend money improving the handling or the drivability or the braking system or the rust-proofing or whatever. I don't want or need an "AI-powered web 3.0 air-freshener".

But I guess it's a big selling thing, all the electronic nonsense they stuff cars with, or they wouldn't do it.

Turns out Ligma Balls never worked for Twitter. Gotta love our media. If you can put Tesla/Musk in the headline, run the story ASAP. Who cares about facts.

Surprised the peanut gallery on here didn't post about the Tesla Cyberquad for kids being voluntarily recalled.... despite the fact that the toy is made by Radio Flyer.

Isn’t the irony that Musk was tweeting fake news himself. Everyone makes mistakes.

I thought my green 72 Gremlin was cool. 4 speed stick on the floor.

Andrej Karpathy, former director of artificial intelligence and autopilot vision at Tesla discussing why Tesla eliminated radar and ultrasonic sensors in their quest for autonomy:

Sad state of affairs. Citizen journalism is our only hope. Yes, back to EVs please
Can't remember if I posted here or just in the Lightning Forum. Ford bumped up my delivery window to 10/29 to 11/4. Got so excited, went to the dealership last night, and there is an F150 Lightning that is nearly identical to mine, except a few extra options. First glance, thought it was mine, but it had a ship date 2 days before mine. Hoping this week, but Ford has been moving/changing delivery windows quite a bit for other buyers. Mine is Atlas Blue Metallica, and I'm happy with the color:

That is a Pacer I believe. Yes I am showing my age.
You are correct! Shame on me. I worked in a car wash in the very early 1980s, and I had a good handle on all 1970s and 1980s model cars. But not many Pacers or Gremlins went through the car wash I worked at? It was near Sea Girt, which may explain why.
