OT: Electric vehicles

GM killing the bolt is bigger news than it appears. Once again GM is back to “we have new models coming in the future”. The under 30k market is wide open just in time for the Mexico plant being constructed. Until OEM’s can build an ev they can make money on this rinse and repeat will continue.

Generally speaking, car manufacturers don't make money on their entry-level products.

I just want an affordable hatchback EV.

It seems everything is being shifted to at the "smallest" cross over size, then it's all SUVs.

Upon closer inspection, I'm really liking the Blazer EV.
I looked at that as well.

One issue, that I can't find an update on and it's a really silly point. GM has been dumping the rear sensor from their SUVs and pickups - you know, the beep beep sensor as you back into a parking space. Due to chip shortages, GM started just removing the option from the pickups, Tahoes, Traverses, Yukons, etc. Have they started to add them back and will the Blazer EV have it?

My wife, LOL, refuses to get a car without it.

Damn. I never knew that, but agree with Mrs. Webb that, at this point in time, it's a deal killer.

My S60 won't let me hit stuff, going forwards or backwards. I've tried. It interrupts, sometimes quite rudely.

True when multiple manufacturers are building them. But if only one or even two companies can produce them at a profit the market is huge. Think model T.

That scenario no longer exists. And, without belaboring the point, I don't think you're directionally accurate with the statement.

So this is a bit TMI, but I've been thinking that what I'd really like, for the voice in Waze or other digital text-to-speech devices, is a bratty, bitchy, arrogant dominatrix-type voice and attitude, with great command of expletive-use.

So if I need to take the next right, or stop backing up before running over someone, the voice can say stuff like "take the next right, loser" or "stop backing up you worthless worm, there's a @&#&@ nun strolling a @@&@&^@ newborn right behind you". Except with lots more cursing.

maybe the use of some electric shocks thru the seat cushion to emphasize?

Hell yeah! Now that's what I'm talking about.

And every now and then, we get shocked while the voice says "that's what you get when you behave, so just imagine what'll happen if you let even your inadequate attention waver from the road for the merest moment, you useless mouth-breathing moron".

I would be in heaven. 🤣

Same with my A4. It's pretty abrupt!

GM had 7 years to get the Bolt right and dominate this segment of the EV market (which they had all to themselves). After 7 years, the Bolt still maxed out at a 50 kW charging speed, along with many other uninspiring features. Not a good look for the EV engineers at GM. But hey, they sold 2 EV Hummers last quarter. Another epic fail. Not sure why people are excited about their future products. Must be the Mary BS Barra charm.

"Mary, you electrified the entire industry! You lead, and it matters"

They do have a new line up of EVs coming out. Maybe you should wait and see.

I think the supply chain issues have been largely resolved. I'd be surprised if the chip shortage continues to be an a major issue for manufacturers.

Maybe but if you go and look at current GM trucks and SUVs and look at the window sticker, you’ll see a credit for the rear sensor of like 150 bucks. At first they were giving 45 buck credits because they were retrofitting the sensors as chips came in. But now, they aren’t even doing that. They just killed the sensor on new trucks/SUVs. Not sure if/when that will change.

Yawn. Just stop. This is no secret and Ford is open about it. It's called start up capital.

What a surprise- the Tweeter is a Tesla investor.

OFFS...

I've been making this same point with these dunces for months. They're not going to get it because their brains have been rewired to ignore things that make sense.

Sales down 1/3 YOY is hardly ramping up production.
Look closer and stop being a baiting Tesla fanboy.

The more rationale coverage, instead of fanboy shitposting and tweeting took the quarter in stride. The social media/Tweeter crowd with their failed pro wrestling style takedowns get old quickly.

Ford’s electric car sales lost momentum in the first three months of 2023. Despite overall EV sales growing 41% YOY, Mustang Mach-E sales slipped nearly 20% to just over 5,400 units as the automaker retooled its factory in Mexico (Ford also just reopened Mustang Mach-E orders) in order to boost production in the second half of the year.

That said, Ford does expect its first-gen EVs to approach the breakeven point later this year as it works toward hitting its 8% EBIT margin target by the end of 2026.

It's encouraging in that they're moving in the right direction. I'm interested in seeing what changes (advancements) are made on the Polestar 2 platform, which I really like.
Wait for the posts on how they will fail. I don't get the gleeful heel clicking of Tesla fanboys wishing for legacy automakers to fail. Last time I checked competition is good and monopolies are bad.

They're all either 12 years old or committed to acting that way.

Yikes

That seems crazy but anecdotally, a friend had a Tesla Model 3. His wife took it to a fair and when leaving the grass parking field, she ran over a stump. Caused damage underneath. Final bill paid by insurance was over $15K and they didn't have their Model 3 for like 3 months.

Personally speaking, I don't wish failure upon any legacy OEM. I want to see the transition to sustainable energy accelerate as fast as possible.

However, the transition from ICE to EV is going to have some casualties. Declining ICE sales, while simultaneously trying to increasing EV sales is going to be very tricky. The cash bleed cannot go on forever. Ford appears sincere about accelerating the transition. This may be the first step towards Ford spinning off the entire side of the EV business. I applaud them for their transparency. Other OEMs...not so much.

I wasn't necessarily referring to any one poster in this thread, but the idiotic tweets that cropped up with Ford's earnings. Even though I own a Lightning, I'm far from a Ford fanboy, as it took a lot of consideration for me to buy a Ford product after my Maverick experience. I have been pleased with the Lightning.

Currently, without taking short term losses into account, it seems that Hyundai, Kia, VW and perhaps Ford will survive, but it is far too early to tell. I don't follow GM, but not sure why they appear to be behind, or maybe I am missing something. Volvo has some interesting products, and I would not rule out any of luxury European brands. We have not hear a lot from Honda or Toyota either. This will be a long game before the death of any legacy automakers.

You said you were a huge fan of Maverick, but I misunderstood that you were talking about the series with James Garner. 🤷‍♂️

Oh. My bad, I should have been more clear when I said, "The seats suck and the gas mileage is gonna be horrible". I mean, I could see how you'd misinterpret that. I apologize.
