OT: Electric vehicles

Not much research in those articles since the #1 reason for CT delay is 4680s. No mention. Tesla is not where they had hoped to be in their ramp. Only 1 of 4 battery lines are up and running in Austin.

Neither did they mention the piddly volume of other OEMs. It's not like Ford, Rivian, and lol ..GM are crushing it. They've barely made a dent in the huge EV pickup market in the US. I agree with you that there's plenty of room for multiple players. It's going to come down to engineering excellence, cost, scale, and a shit ton of batteries. For those reasons, I remain very confident in Tesla's ability.
As an inside joke among a circle of friends, we say: Irregardless of the 4680s. . . . . a vehicle was promised and delayed three times. It's a very bad look, IMO. People were clamoring for an electric pickup truck, and Ford and Rivian were the first companies to deliver. Meanwhile, nobody knows when the CT will actually be released. That's a very bad look, again, as Tesla is very poor at communication with non customers on product release dates.

Tesla fans can piss all over Ford and Rivian all they want, but they are delivering electric pickup trucks to customers. We have discussed this to death on these board---it is not a simple proposition for a legacy automaker to flip a switch and start mass producing electric vehicles. Rivian is not in that class. But Ford is in that class, and they are ramping up. Actually, the company to watch IMO is Hyundai/Kia- they seem to be pumping out a decent volume of interesting EV vehicles.

I have never discounted Tesla and their abilities. They have built an impressive economy of scale, and it will take a long time for a legacy automaker to catch up or get close. So be it. I worked in an industry like that in the nascent stage-optical fiber manufacturing. The company I worked for was crushing it. Now that the market it mature (30 plus years later), there are many players in that market. So be it with EVs, if they even still exist in 30 years and are not replaced by something else.

My issue with Tesla is that their styling and choices on things like yokes are a turnoff to me, and as I have detailed many times, the CT is an abomination in my humble opinion. But I also think the same thing about the Hummer. But opinions vary, and what one person finds repulsive may be very attractive to others.

Like I said before, cost and range are the issues with EVs.
And while folks like to hand-wave about recycling, I suspect some issues w/old batteries (or battery materials) will evolve to become a bit of a problem. Gonna have to wait a while longer to find out.

There are no perfect technologies, so not sure why some get so defensive about all this. Better to remain open to both the good and bad and make informed decisions.

Oooooh. A fun mash-up of cloying brand-adulation and a paint-peel watching, sleep-inducing, video game. Woo hoo! Teslerati everywhere must be high-fiving each other over it. 🤣

Incidentally, if that's really what it's like in the car with FSD in operation, then I predict the number of mass murders to increase ten-fold due to drivers whose impatience-driven stress levels exceed human tolerance. We're gonna have to ban clock-towers.

Or else, you know, the drivers will fall asleep and then die when the car runs into the back of a fire truck with Musk saying "it's the driver's fault - he was supposed to remain alert".

There are cars parked around some of the Public Housing Projects around here that are newer and in better shape than some of my neighbors cars. The other thing is that for the most part there are not any spaces to park. We're talking a few hundred used parking spaces for people that have subsidized housing.
Those are my blow dealers. Don't interfere with them.

Updated Model S Plaid. Either I’m finally getting used to the styling, or the model refresh has altered the styling in ways that work better for me. Side views seem almost Audi-like which is a good thing.

This strikes me as a fair-minded and useful review.

I think the S is the best looking of all the Tesla lineup. The modified 3-box, which looks stupid and awkward on the Model 3, works much better on the S.

It seems to not have a steering wheel. That's just weird.

The photos show the yoke. But a steering wheel is now standard and the yoke is an option for idiots who are clueless about driving.

Basically, the yoke is a pass/fail IQ test for buyers. Cue Chevy Chase saying “that’s right, he has no IQ” for anybody who ticks that option box when ordering.

Don’t know much about BYD but they are beating Tesla in China. Wonder if they’ll ever expand into US.

No it doesn’t. You just responded to one of my post about picking and choosing. Range = cost. Are you a complete idiot or have nefarious intentions, slick?
Of course it matters. For example, let's compare an ID4 to a Model Y.

Despite a similar size battery pack, the Tesla gets more range to begin with.

At 70 mph, the Tesla will exceed its rated range, the ID4 will come up short.

In winter driving, the Tesla will lose less range vs the ID4 due to superior thermal management of the Tesla.

Tesla has a lower drag coefficient = better range.

When comparing the AWD of both, the model Y is $2k cheaper.

Comparing performance, software, software updates, UI, charging speed, charging network, and a whole host of other bells and whistles, Tesla comes out on top again.

Maybe someone doesn't like the Model Y aesthetically , but other than that, you'd have to be an idiot to buy an ID4 if your concerned about cost, range and value for $. So yeah, it DOES matter which EV you're talking about when discussing cost and range.

BYD sells a mix of BEV, PHEV, and HEVs.
Tesla sells more BEVs vs BYD.
A majority of BYD's lineup is at a lower price point, lower end vehicles, but they are expanding into the higher end.
BYD makes their own batteries. LFP blade batteries.
BYD is expanding rapidly into Europe.
Unlikely we see BYDs in the US any time soon due to high Chinese import tariffs, and $0 tax credit.

I agree with You. When I researched the 2, the model Y is the better car. Fortunately for me, the savings was significant at the time to justify the purchase Of ID4. I would’ve way overpaid for the model Y at the time (pre-price cuts) and the federal tax credit made the model Y almost 50% more expensive. The model 3 was only 10% more at the time but the federal tax credit made the model 3 33% more expensive.

I believe LI is more of a direct challenge to TSLA than BYD.

The Chinese car graveyard - Wonder if that's near any of their ghost cities. JK - the images are from Shanghai. From the article:

They reportedly belong to a failed car-sharing service called Microcity, which had thousands of Kandi 11 models, as documented by the Chinese state-owned newspaper People's Daily.

Multiple car-rental businesses failed during the same period in China, which could explain the existence of these car cemeteries.

Goods coming out of China are still such crap.
Some are, some aren't.

It can sometimes be pretty difficult to actually know how much of what one buys contains stuff made in China. I'd guess Chinese goods, along with goods from many other countries, are in supply chains for way more stuff than most people realize.

Ya got yer troll hat on turday, mm-hmm.

They used to work on FSD. But they’ve been switched over to writing the code to limit Twitter users to viewing a max of 1000 tweets per day. Because they can actually get that to work.

You'd think, but no...

I would love to do an assessment of Elmo's app dev processes. It's got to be absolutely hysterical.

You say that. But I was interrupted, at a most inopportune time no less, while surfing Twitter porn the other day. There I was in working my way through the “mean-nurse” account‘s tweets, Everything was going great and then BOOM, no more posts, just “this tweet is unavailable, try again later”.

Musk wasn’t making any friend’s that day.
