As an inside joke among a circle of friends, we say: Irregardless of the 4680s. . . . . a vehicle was promised and delayed three times. It's a very bad look, IMO. People were clamoring for an electric pickup truck, and Ford and Rivian were the first companies to deliver. Meanwhile, nobody knows when the CT will actually be released. That's a very bad look, again, as Tesla is very poor at communication with non customers on product release dates. Not much research in those articles since the #1 reason for CT delay is 4680s. No mention. Tesla is not where they had hoped to be in their ramp. Only 1 of 4 battery lines are up and running in Austin.
Neither did they mention the piddly volume of other OEMs. It's not like Ford, Rivian, and lol ..GM are crushing it. They've barely made a dent in the huge EV pickup market in the US. I agree with you that there's plenty of room for multiple players. It's going to come down to engineering excellence, cost, scale, and a shit ton of batteries. For those reasons, I remain very confident in Tesla's ability.
Tesla fans can piss all over Ford and Rivian all they want, but they are delivering electric pickup trucks to customers. We have discussed this to death on these board---it is not a simple proposition for a legacy automaker to flip a switch and start mass producing electric vehicles. Rivian is not in that class. But Ford is in that class, and they are ramping up. Actually, the company to watch IMO is Hyundai/Kia- they seem to be pumping out a decent volume of interesting EV vehicles.
I have never discounted Tesla and their abilities. They have built an impressive economy of scale, and it will take a long time for a legacy automaker to catch up or get close. So be it. I worked in an industry like that in the nascent stage-optical fiber manufacturing. The company I worked for was crushing it. Now that the market it mature (30 plus years later), there are many players in that market. So be it with EVs, if they even still exist in 30 years and are not replaced by something else.
My issue with Tesla is that their styling and choices on things like yokes are a turnoff to me, and as I have detailed many times, the CT is an abomination in my humble opinion. But I also think the same thing about the Hummer. But opinions vary, and what one person finds repulsive may be very attractive to others.
