OT: ESPN Has Gone off the Rails

the funny part is that some people here are still in denial about the whole ESPN/Big East fiasco...

They have done this before and they will do it again. They are NOT a news channel.

Changing the narrative because you no longer like it is not a good look for ESPN. Whether Curt Shilling does or does not represent Disney's 'corporate values' is irrelevant to the fact that Schilling, and his bloody sock, were a major storyline in that series.

We are reaching a point at which people who do not read newspapers or watch news on tv or follow news on the Internet are every bit as informed as the people who do. I guess it is debatable as to which is worse - not knowing what is going on - or - having what you know turn out to be inaccurate. Ah the spin doctors.

ESPN is a very biased political news station that talks sports. That's all it's become and it's why they are bleeding money. Who watches ESPN unless a game is on? The network is a joke, everyone tries way too hard to be Chris Berman 20 years ago.

Everything is political now, can't avoid it anywhere. Even this site has political pop-ups.

Everyone knows that ESPN is helmed by a bunch of vindictive pansies.

I was talking to Bob Ley last week. Wasn't the appropriate setting to ask him anything even slightly controversial. Besides he seemed like a really nice guy. Even took the time to come over and say it was nice to meet me when he was leaving.

That said, I sure would have liked to hear their side of all the stuff they've done. Must be a whole load of BS.

ESPN cares about what is best for ESPN. It's nothing new. Shilling was fine with it and cashing their checks until he was no longer useful to them. Now he's on the other side and whining about how the network slants portrayals of him and others. Too bad.

ESPN is not bleeding money. Yes - their growth rate is getting chopped at the knees, and the future business model is now at risk, but it is still a cash cow business for Disney.

It is interesting how conservatives think corporate free speech is when the Kochs buy elections, not when corporations fire people who would be fired from any private organization for their stupid behavior.

Money is green no matter the person spending it, the Chamber of Commerce realizes but when does this trickle to the "base" is the question

What part of what I said isn't true?
Try to see humor instead of making everything a political statement.
The sock I was referring to was Shilling's sock ESPN left out.

Bet you didn't click on link showing Shilling pitching with that bloody sock because you only are trying to make a political statement and are inviting others ( radical right and/or far left )with the same goal to do the same.
I don't post very often on the CE board, but know there are many that bring it here.
So can understand why you couldn't see the humor in my reply quoting your political statement.

I deleted ESPN off my bookmark and no longer visit any of their sites or watch their show. Their biased agenda has struck new lows. They put an article on the front page of their site, talking about a marginal player who had a run in with the law. The picture depicted the player shielding himself (a black player) from two white police officers shown clenching their fists. It was a picture drawn by an artist.

That was the last straw for me. Report sports in an honest way, with integrity and truth. Their agenda has superseded printing sports stories. Done, done done. I will never support them again.

Started to despise them years ago when THEY had to be the story and not the sports they covered. This predates their coup to break up the big east. That just made them even bigger pieces of s#it in my eyes.

ESPN skewered RU in the Mike Rice scandal for having an out of control coach yet they have Ray Lewis as a football analyst, accused of murder, and Bobby Knight, probably the most out of control coach in college, as a college basketball analyst. Hypocrisy reigns supreme. Also, compare the minutes of air time they spent hammering RU over Mike Rice to the time spent covering either (actually you could probably add them together) the UNC scandal and the UL/Patino scandal.

Do not watch the e$pin propaganda channel, only for rare live Rutgers game on espn 2x360?

Depends on what newspapers or magazines you read, what networks you watch etc. Ignorance is definitely not bliss.

And the anti-RU campaign. Wonder why the B1G is getting a huge

But Ray Lewis or Bobby Knight was not going to help the B1G secure a huge rights deal with FOX.

ESECPN went off the rails years ago. Just live games & 30 for 30's for this sports fan.
When Disney went Eisner.

True story. My mother-in-law was a pre-school teacher for twenty years. When Disney was Disney, she was able to show her kids any Disney movie for free, no restrictions. As soon as Disney morphed, within a month she received a letter informing her that she would have to pay a usage fee for any Disney move that was shown at her school. She told them to pound sand. No more Disney movies at school. Probably worked out best for the kids in the long run.

Only time I watch espNBA these days is MNF. Took them off my remote "favorites" years ago although I do sometimes watch tidbits of PTI at the gym.

Way to miss the point of the whole thread.

Not really. You just have to get different sources. Democrats hate Fox and Republicans hate MSNBC / CNN, but you need to watch / read / listen to news sources that challenge your personal bias to remain informed. ESPN may have removed Schilling from their 2004 documentary, but that doesn't mean that every sports news source has. I've been telling people for over a decade that knowing half the story is a reflection of you in this era because you can read stories published around the globe. We've always been told part of the story, but now we have the ability to get more information than we're "supposed to".

...and the actual history of the series.

Just this morning, my boss and I were discussing SportsCenter, as it is on every morning in our office. It is truly sad what has happened to their flagship program. Growing up ('90s and early '00s for me), it was a must-watch. It became part of my daily routine as I got ready for school or ate breakfast. They gave you highlights of every single game in every major sport and presented them as if the scores were previously unknown. They had solid personalities that were endearing and the format was perfect. Now the show is filled with live segments or production based around their favorites (Lebron, Kobe, Tiger etc) with 10-12 second clips of a select few games they deem worthy of showing. Not to mention, many of their on-air personalities are so insufferable (Steven A. Smith, Skip Bayless, Brian Windhorst, Jemele Hill) it doesn't help their cause. Other than the occasional football/baseball game, there is no reason to watch ESPN anymore.

Make SportsCenter Great Again!

Anyone catch Bryant Gumble end his HBO "sports" whine two Sundays ago? He equated "bias" around the NC bathroom law with the Civil Rights movement and agreed with all the boycotting of the State of NC. His tired mantra is exaggeration and evil, "bias anywhere is bias everywhere." Rilly? Maybe we can slip the valedictorian a word or two about Obama when he speaks at Rutgers. JUST PLAY THE DAMNED GAME!

PC and Affirmative action is the new racism. Gotta hope that the next generation realizes this and decides fight it.

Everyone has a good point about ESPN being dead wrong in this.. BUT, really.. bloody sock? Why was such a big deal made of a little blood on a multimillionaire's foot? Tell the whole story how he had surgery on his tendon in order to be able to pitch effectively at all and that is why he bled. Simply sating "bloody sock" is not giving him enough credit. ESPN is insane to avoid the whole subject in telling the story of that series.
