OT: Favorite Movie Soundtracks

Did anyone post Casino? You hear Can’t you hear me knocking in it’s entirety. Classic!

So, I'm sitting here listening to the Friday Night Lights movie soundtrack (because it's that kind of day), and got to thinking I don't recall any OT threads on movie soundtracks.

My personal GoTo's:
  1. Rocky I
  2. Rudy (but HATE the movie)
  3. Friday Night Lights
  4. American Graffiti
EDITED: How could I forget Rocky?
All Summer Long by Beach Boys at end of American Graffiti. Very underrrated song by best American Group of all time.

I figure a movie that is just a mix of songs by other popular artists is fun, and can help set a mood. But I tend to like it more when movie soundtracks are mostly original compositions made for the movie itself. I’m a fan of Hans Zimmer’s original music soundtracks. Three of my favorites are:

Tears of the Sun
Interstellar
Inception

I also really like movies that introduce me to music from artists I’d never heard of before, as opposed to very well known artists. For example, the train scene from Risky Business turned me on to Tangerine Dream.

Is a movie's score the same as its soundtrack?

In no particular order:

Glory
The Temptations
American Graffiti 2
Purple Rain
Rocky (sans Eye Of The Tiger)

IMHO a soundtrack should only count if the music was written specifically for the movie . A musical score. Most listed here are just a collection of songs. Using that criteria the greatest movie soundtrack ever: Ben Hur.
The Overture, the Roman March, the Sea Battle, the Parade of the Charioteers. Nothing like it ever.
Also people will still be listening to the Imperial March from Star Wars long after most of the songs mentioned are long forgotten.
“That Thing You Do” qualifies as a lot of the soundtrack was written just for the movie.

But what you’re suggesting IMO is for a different thread.

How are you all missing the G.O.A.T:

Saturday Night Fever. Everything else is playing for second.
I loved the movie and the soundtrack is great. But it can't be the G.O.A.T. when it includes Disco Duck.
Little trivia for you. In the movie Travolta dances with a girl named Connie to Disco Inferno. That actress was appearing on screen for the first time. It was Fran Drescher who later had the sitcom The Nanny.
They also have a great dialogue scene. Not for the kids or the office.

when we say soundtracks we mean the whole thing right? not just 1 or two songs from a movie? I feel like a lot of people are thinking of a great song or two and not taking the entire album into consideration which would really lower what people what rank. I stand by Tron Legacy as the best from start to finish. took 2 years and like 70 orchestra members merging classical with electronic and made the movie what it was. It also lead to a revival of daft punk's career and definitely contributed to the start of the electronic scene of the 2010's. I know a lot of older people here may not appreciate it as much but that's just my .02

I would also add something like guardians of the galaxy was great, but that was basically a compilation of existing songs so not sure I would include that.

edit just for nostalgia, i remember being a kid and buying mission impossible (for the theme song), babysitters club (breakfast at tiffanys), and batman forever (seal and U2) on cassette in the 90s, but that was back when you could buy singles from soundtracks. I wouldn't consider any of those great overall.

That’s basically what a soundtrack is, the score is different.

You're kidding, right ?
Best at what ? Sucking ?
They were in a festival-like show we went to see years ago at Roosevelt Racetrack. We actually came to see CSNY perform at that show. Our group booed through the entire Beachboys set. We actually would have left the show and come back later when the real bands were playing, but it was lawn-type seating and we had a prime spot. So we had to sit through the Beachboys pablum. Just awful.
