OT: Fran Brown hired by Syracuse

Went to visit friends at SU in the early mid 90’s. The athlete dorm parking lot was like a high end car lot. Syracuse was using NIL money before NIL was a thing. Boeheim and Pasqualoni had bag men that would make the SEC blush. Fran will have no problem finding someone willing to write a check up there. They are their professional sports option in the tundra.
That was certainly true 30 years ago when Cuse hoops and football were riding high and the Detroit area bagmen showed up at Derrick Coleman’s door and Dave Bing’s automobile connections provided some nice rides - lol

Such “support” especially on the football side has dried up immensely in more recent times.

You may not be up to date

Just further supports the point I was making. Thx!
Actually, it kind of refutes your point, which was: "That was certainly true 30 years ago when Cuse hoops and football were riding high and the Detroit area bagmen showed up at Derrick Coleman’s door and Dave Bing’s automobile connections provided some nice rides - lol"

Such “support” especially on the football side has dried up immensely in more recent times.

The article:

"Earlier this year, Weitsman said he would pay more than $2 million in NIL deals to current and future Syracuse athletes."

"Weitsman also funded several name, image and likeness deals with SU athletes. He said he would honor any current NIL deals but would not form any new deals."

"Syracuse does have its own NIL collectives, an NIL store and other initiatives to support student-athletes, but no other boosters, at least publicly, that provide the public reach and influence of Weitsman."

I think Nunzio C. will continue handling North Jersey. He's doing a pretty decent job there. With help from Robinson.
What will Nunzio's role be if the Giants coach is named the OC?
You guys should do well in recruiting. Fran Brown is as real as real gets, and he connects with recruits. You are luck to have him.

The questions will be how will all the other aspects of the head coach be handled by a guy who has never been higher than a position coach. Same for the DC. Ace recruiter. But how will he do as a DC. Time will tell. Not throwing any shade your way, just some questions.

He has been replaced by less public, let's say" flamboyant" personalities. He was a serious attention hound.
I lived in the Southern tier a while ago. I've been in Syracuse. Need to do something to generate excitement and survive the tundra, right? Wonder why he chose to locate up there, but the cost of living is MUCH less than NYC.

You conveniently left out the headline. “I will no longer support Syracuse athletics …”My reference to 30 years ago was when Kapuna was up there and recruiting $$$ were pouring in.. I never said they didn’t have any deep pocketed boosters in the intervening years. My ultimate point was such support has dropped off in more recent times which the article backs up to some extent.

Why Weitsman decided to locate up there? That's where he's from. He's always been there.

This just isn't true. There is money up here to provide the support. The problem was that we had an administration that just didn't care about the sports program. The most recent example I can give is the new multi, multi-million dollar football complex now being built. The last admin insisted it was something we could never afford. Wildhack had no problem going out and finding donors to get it done. When some of these donors were asked why they were now willing to fund it, the response from them was, no one ever asked. This guy has more than doubled NIL donations and still finding more.

Sounds familiar. We finally have a President who is on board with athletics.

Oh boy. I love Fran Brown and followed his career prior to and post RU but that video reeks of 2 things. 1) A guy that is in over his head. 2) A guy that looks like he already regrets his decision.
The orange mascot is creepy AF. I do hope he does well but not at the expense of Rutgers. Seems like a genuinely good man.

Regreting his decision? That would make sense to people that didnt listen to his interview he made the day after coaching the SEC game and his Introductory press conference on Monday

Look who showed up. Mr. Rutgers Dumpster Fire thread. We all love Fran Brown and he is a great hire for Cuse. We are just skeptics of coaches who were never a head coach (not even a coordinator) taking over a program. He is a great recruiter.

He would have been a good hire for a low level G5 program. Like Syracuse. Ohhh wait.

It's pretty much G6 now anyway.

Yea I did both of those things. But once you spend more than 15 minutes in a location and realize what your up against reality starts to sink in. I remember getting wined and dined during a recruiting process for a job. Took the position and was there for a week and started to regret the decision. Once I got under the hood from the inside I realized the position was a much bigger lift than was ever relayed.

Then just say that rather than making a permanent opinion of a 20 second clip. There are other interviews out there to watch if you are interested in his thoughts

Our exact situation when we relocated to Cincinnati. We got out of there in under a year and never looked back. It was my only offer coming out of school, and it was not like I had options. Headhunter called with a job in NYC, and we were gone.

Well I will say this, Brown /Robinson will make a rather large splash in the portal game this season. How big and how much it helps is still to be determined. I do think it’s feasible for them to be a 9-3, 8-4 team in a weak ACC.

The other thing to note about that clip is that is was during a timeout so its not like he had a lot of time to talk. He came out said a few words then had to get off the court.

Bad setup by your Athletics people. Here's how it should have been done.

None of this really matters when it comes to what happens on the field. We are just having a little fun here. You guys got a great recruiter in Fran Brown. Maybe it will work out well, maybe it won't .

Yep only stayed at this position for 3 months. Only position I ever took on that didn’t last more than 3 years. Ripped the headhunter a new one.

yeah that made no sense to us at the game, If I remember correctly since I was there for each one but could be wrong I think all since Coach P was dismissed when they were introduced during a Basketball game it was at halftime.

But in the long run like you said it won't matter, what will is whether they win or not. Next years schedule is set up well for a first year coach, no FSU or Clemson for the first time in a while, but 2025 will be tough with Tennessee and ND highlighting the OOC schedule and Clemson and Miami on the ACC schedule with an away game at SMU which could be tough. They better get better quickly because 2025 will be a much more difficult schedule.

Brown might do well but the odds are against him. Position coach promoted to head coach and is very likable. Doesn’t happen very often because the odds are against him. It might be 30% chance of success. Brown hires a DL coach as DC. He plans to hire a running back coach as OC. The good side is he has the full support of the fans.

No HC, DC, or OC experience, interim or co experience doesn’t count. However, Brown does has a chance of succeeding. Everybody will be learning their new positions. I wish him the best.

Not sure about Miami. They seem to be floundering under Super Mario, another guy who coached under Schiano. I'm surprised he has gotten as many opportunities as he has, but maybe he's building a pipeline and it will turn around for him in a year or two.
Ga Tech looking a lot better under their new coach. I kind of follow them. Think you guys will have your hands full with Cal too. They lose a lot of close games, but they have a decent team.
We are happy to be out of the nearly guaranteed 4 loss schedule of Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Iowa or Wisconsin. The latter 2 should be winnable on some years. Our schedule should set up fairly well this year in comparison to the last 4 years.

While our board rarely brings up Syracuse since we do not play any more, the hiring of Fran Brown has piqued some interest. As noted, it is an interesting experiment to hire an ace recruiter with no coordinator experience as the head coach. Time will tell. Fran knows a lot of people, and if he can assemble and manage the right team, it may work out well for him.

Their OC called the plays at Baylor. TAMU had a top 10 defense while ERob was the Co DC. So its not like they have no experience at all.

I used to travel a lot to Cincinnati on business in the 90s-early 2000's. I think I hated it more than any other city. My company has a huge location in the area and it's really nice now. I still would never live there but the new ballparks are great and a lot of re-gentrified neighborhoods. I don't mind going there now.

Back in the 1990s. A few observations.
Seemed very racially segregated.

Then Covington KY factor. Have heard Covington is nicer now. Used to be full of strip joints.

People were very parochial there. Very difficult place to make friends. When we moved into the neighborhood, the only person who spoke to us or welcomed us was a really old widower who was lonely.

Weather sucked from late October to June. Cold and gloomy.

The place I worked at was weird. Seemed set back in time.

There was a heavy metal club called Annie's on the river. The only night it was busy was on disco night.

The only thing I liked was Bogarts Night club. I saw Hole there. Courtney Love stage dove and landed on me. Saw Korn when they had just released their first album. Saw Rollins Band and met Henry.

You are dead on from my experience back in the day. Covington is much nicer now. First thing I said to my Cincinnati area co-workers about the weather was that my least favorite weather is low 40's and rainy. They said you would hate winters there. Was on a Zoom call today with one of them and they said that is exactly the weather for the last month.

Damn that was great and he definitely dresses better than brown. Nice suit.

The role of being HC of a college football team is closer to CEO than actual coach. My feel is Fran has to grow into that IMO. Schiano did too but he's had 23 years of practice. And as good as Fran has been as a recruiter, he's the closer now, not the frontline guy. His job now is all the important administrative, staff managing, press appearances, glad handling donors, events etc. We will see how it works out.

Jeff Nixon was only Running back coach/Co Offensive Coordinator with the QB coach who was probably the real OC at Baylor. Sounds like Jeff Nixon was OC in name only.

Elijah Robinson was at Texas A&M from 2018-2023 and was DL coach for the entire time. They made him CO-offensive coordinator in 2023 when everybody left or was terminated.

I was right, Syracuse really screwed up with their staff hired. Nobody at Syracuse was a head coach, offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator. Now, knowing what I know, Cuse has only 10% of success. It’s funny how none of the Cuse fans will admit the absence of experience and everyone is a great hire.
