OT: Fran Brown hired by Syracuse

Didn't know about this dude but that is impressive. Glad he is in the PAC10 and we don't have to run into him. Uh wait.....
Think all of the coaches are due a raise after they join the B1G. Maybe not Prime Time.

UW's head coach makes 4.2 million per year. He is 111-13 lifetime. Seems he is doing fine as a low paid P5 coach.
DeBoer has been a hell of a coach so far. I think he was the OC at Indiana when they had a good year a few seasons ago. He coached Penix there.

He was IU OC for a year before he went back to Fresno State as HC. He worked there under Tedford IIRC and Tedford stepped away for health reasons (did again just a couple days ago).

DeBoer is the reason Penix went to UW, not NIL or anything. Actually IIRC, Jake Haener the Fresno QB was going to transfer to UW to reunite with DeBoer but he changed his mind and then Penix came along. Haener was a productive qb for him too so he's got some track record with regards to replacing Penix for next year.

Interesting to see how good they will be after Penix leaves. We saw what happened to Allen.

DeBoer, paid same as Greg, is getting paid $323,000 per win.

Greg is getting paid $666,000 per win.

Have proposed this before. P5 coaches get a base salary of $4M. $1M for each win over 6. You win 12, you get $10M.
Greg does not need a raise. Or an extension with 4 years left on his deal. If he does "well" next year, give him a 2 year extension and a small bump, but not over $5M. If he does not do well, then maybe we could hire DeBoer for $5M. 🤔
But according to rutgersal and some others here, only Greg can succeed here because this is NJ? 😂

See below.
Jake Haener was a lightly recruited 3 star, only P5 offer was UW. In DeBoer's full year at Fresno State, Haener passed for 4,100 yards, 33 TD/9 INT. In his final year at Fresno, he was significantly less productive.

Coaching matters.

I'm guessing by his record of 67-3 at Sioux Falls and 12-6 (9-3/6-2 only full season) at Fresno State, he will do just fine.

Note that Penix was a 3 star pro-style QB recruit. His P5 offers were Tennessee (Butch Jones) that evaporated after Jones was fired, and Oregon, FSU, and Rutgers!!!! Think that UW will be fine after Penix leaves.

different conference, HCs pay should be compared to their peers and when low only look at conferences wish a lower average pay scale that hires someone for more money.

Thank you. We seem to agree. Mid to lower level coaches such as Schiano Wilcox, Dillingham, etc. get paid about $4M and below. Greg's salary is appropriate. Regardless of the conference we are in, we are cash-strapped, trying to catch up with our conference peers in facilities. That is why Greg negotiated hard for the fieldhouse and other non-salary guarantees. Now there is NIL. It would be counterproductive to the success of the program to increase Greg's salary for no reason when that money could be more prudently spent on other priorities to make the program successful.

Think if he signed with, say Michigan St., after, W's bowl he'd be paid 4.2?
[/QUOTE]
Not sure what that question is supposed to imply.
MSU already proved their stupidity in that endeavor with Tucker, who promptly crashed and burned after making that infinitely stupid deal with Tucker.

It implies that his market value is .currently s lot higher than 4.2

Serious question. Has Fran Brown been the head coach of any football team?

Would Penix have been anywhere near the QB at RU that he was at Washington and Indiana? I'm guessing not, unless DeBoer was his coach.

Now compare what Schiano took over to the coaches that came before DeBoer
Dude has done an excellent job , but he took over a very good program

UW was 4-8 the year before he got there

Another mention of Elijah Robinson having an offer at the Cuse which he has to weigh vs other options

Not with the OL Rutgers had those years. Wait! Perhaps at Indiana where he got beaten to a pulp

Yep. Been saying for years if the coach believes in their product and ability they should be paid like a Wall St trader. Respectable draw and intensive bonus structure. 3 million base and bonuses that would bring up to double or triple their draw. Especially if we are going to be handing out lengthy time terms and rolling extensions.

I’ve given the example of Mark Stoops a coach who I think is good and pretty much done all you can expect at UK. Two 10 win seasons in his tenure and things UK had never done before.

After his 2nd 10 win season he got a contract that boosted his salary to 9M/yr. In the two years since he’s won 7 games overall and been 3-5 in conference both those years. His contract goes out to 2031. He’s a good coach but for that salary that’s not enough. It would’ve been better to have a bonus that bumped him up to 9M the year he got 10 wins and then back down in the years his performance didn’t warrant it.

I’ve said this before too. Despite that 9M/yr salary he was on the verge of heading to A&M. So what the hell is the school getting for all these boosts and extensions. They still can leave and do leave quite often. Elko got a boost from Duke last year and he still left. Jonathan Smith the same. I like these coaches too but they’re perfect examples of what’s the point.

So if you’re the school you’re only on the hook for the downside if things turn south but don’t get to take part in the upside when coach decides to leave. Contracts aren’t worth the paper they’re written on if you’re the school. So why go crazy giving up extensions and salary boosts when they don’t assure anything for the school except downside risk. Better off sticking with reasonable terms and base salary and lengths and paying for performance with bonuses annually.

I think Nunzio C. will continue handling North Jersey. He's doing a pretty decent job there. With help from Robinson.
Nunzio might just be sick of being made the temporary top guy, then being passed over when the OC is named by the new HC
He might look for a G-5 OC position instead of staying a position coach biding his time until he finds a P-5 program that makes him their OC

There's a big difference in Brown and Robinson enticing recruits to Georgia or Texas A&M with big NIL $$$ packages versus offering Syracuse recruits a pair of snow boots from a local Syracuse sports shop. It's a different game now.

With that said, I'm sure a few disgruntled former Georgia or A&M players that they had a relationship with may initially make their way up north.

He's already been offered by Brown, and he's already agreed to stay.

Went to visit friends at SU in the early mid 90’s. The athlete dorm parking lot was like a high end car lot. Syracuse was using NIL money before NIL was a thing. Boeheim and Pasqualoni had bag men that would make the SEC blush. Fran will have no problem finding someone willing to write a check up there. They are their professional sports option in the tundra.
