OT: How does Northern Iowa do it?

Watch them play--every player on the court can shoot the ball and their offense is centered around the 3 pointer. They are constantly looking for an open 3 which opens up the inside game. Or they drive in and dish out for the open 3. They don't do anything special--they just play college basketball the way you have to play to win.

Agree need shooters on court. Grier yesterday was what 0-6 on threes?

How does Northern Iowa win games over North Carolina, Iowa State, and Wichita State?
Their roster ...

Do you watch them? Besides the main point Patrick mentioned, did you see how intense both their defense and Wichita's defense was? I watched the last 10 minutes of that game and a lot of people might not like how low scoring that game was, but that was an incredible defensive effort, hard charging rebounding effort by both teams.

Yes, I did and was amazed at their effort on both ends and not being intimidated on enemy territory. What are UNI's facilities like? Did their players arrive on-campus as highly rated recruits?

UNI does it with 2nd's and 3rd's and has a good hoop tradition----made the Rd of 16 a couple of times. Plays in the UNI Dome a multipurpose Athletic Facility that seats almost 20,000 for football at 1-AA level and 10,000 for hoops and wrestling.

You're right they can shoot----most Midwest schools have shooters .

Personally I wouldn't recruit a kid under 6'6 that couldn't shoot.

They built a new stadium in 2006. When was the RAC done? Looks like they out spent us by $26 million.

With the 3 point shot basketball games have changed dramatically.Instead of forcing the ball inside offenses try to spread the court with dribble penetration and passes to the corners for open 3 point shots.Except for Sanders Rutgers has poor ball handlers and abysmal 3 point shooters.

They have players who can actually shoot the ball. It's a skill that their coaches refine and develop, instead of assuming that people who posterize scrubs on You Tube will magically become great shooters. They also have a clue what they want to do offensively when they cross half court.

G-RUnit, did you hear Boylan on post game? And he coached which I have never done. Williams was guarding kid who was 6'6" and spending a lot of energy on d. He had 4 steals in game. Boylan said when you spend that much effort on defense it affects your offense. And I get you don't like Williams, but the kid is tough and plays hard.

Absolutely agree with your comments about Williams. I love his effort and energy. And he plays the complete game. He plays tough defense while guarding players much bigger than him , rebounds , and scores a few points. He's the type of player that you can win with , even in the Big ten. And I do believe his outside shooting will continue to improve.. When that happens ,Williams will finally get his credit.

I don't agree with that respectfully-----if he can't shoot he can't play in the Big Ten unless you have 3 other guys that can.

Just one man's opinion.

He is guarding players much bigger than him. NJcane had a great comment on thread about Nigel Johnson. He was right on the money without the negative comment he made. And thank you JonS.

Sorry Shields but we have to disagree. I get you don't like Daniels but he also is undersized, plays tough and hard. Despite significantly less minutes than Williams, he has as many rebounds, steals and double the assists. Coach Boylan might be right about Williams' shots if they were falling early but not late... but unfortunately that is simply not the case. I like Williams' hustle, defense and effort, just don't think he has been an effective shooting guard. Certainly not going to make him a scapegoat as many on this board have done of Daniels.

I have to agree with Boylan who actually coached college basketball. And read the post by cane fan about guarding bigger players, it was in thread about Nigel Johnson. Guy was right on the money. And you don't like Williams, I get that.

Bigger players, you must need glasses. You do know who Joe Boylan is, and he said that Saturday night. And he actually coached college bb. I realize you know that. Read that post that guy wrote, but I know you will not. And anyway Daniels is going to play major minutes now.

So any time you guard someone taller than you it effects your shooting! Don't know how Jerry West ever did it! Got it!

I agree with Shields on this one. G RUnit you are off base here. We are undersized and Shields is right on here.

Never said we were not undersized. Lots of teams use three guard set. Playing defense not an excuse for poor shooting. Is our shooting better at the beginning of the game or after the half? No. Just silly and certainly not off base.
