This is for an additional TV I found a place in the house for, and I have everything, including the signal, and want to buy a box rather than rent one (if it makes sense). Not sure if one can be bought from Best Buy or somewhere. Anyone with the skinny? TIA.

TiVo was just running sale $50 for refurb box and $250 for lifetime service. Not sure if still on or not.

+1 on TiVo. If you're ambitious you can replace your main cable box with a TiVo box you can get the TiVo mini boxes to stream cable to any TV in your house.

You still have to rent a cable card from the company.

If I only want simple channel-changing ability without any recording on this set, is there an option?

I believe Fios gives option to buy a box (vs renting) for $200.

I recall my first Fios box was one that never turned off. People complained and thats why the new box shuts off (even in middle of shows if you dont press one of the 600 extra buttons on the remote). With the upgrades and low resale I don't think I'd buy a box (Slingbox maybe)

The remotes are pretty intense, and I'm hoping that, for this setup, I can get a simple box and simple remote. Seriously, this one is the simple one in the house.

What kind of TV do you have? Some of them have the ability to accept cable cards, that is probably what you are looking for if it does. Also, when I had FIOS they had the broadcast channels in clear QAM, meaning you could get NBC,ABC, CBS, FOX, but not ESPN, etc if you just plug the cable into the back of the TV. Not sure if that is the case still though.

Samsung 52" plasma. I bought it the day after I broke my previous one when Nova threw his second pick in a game. Threw my baseball cap from 15 feet, and the metal snap on the back of the hat cracked the screen. I still have a mean fastball.

Hdhomerun prime... 1 cablecard 3 streams

Setup one windows pc with npvr and schedulesdirect.

Then you can use as many firetv boxes as you want.. just sideload kodi on it or download hdhomerun app. Or if you have a smart tv, you can stream channels . Also works on your tablets and cell phones.

A bit more advanced but works great for me.

Shit's getting real up in this thread. It's no longer simple to put a fourth TV on the third floor of the house and make it change channels.
