Should be a good get for Durkin. Guy with head coaching experience and a Virginia presence.

That hurts Pen State recruiting as they like to go to Virginia.

Very good for us gets us in to the recruiting hotbeds of Norfolk and Tidewater Virginia.

Now, we just have to find someone who can recruit Jersey. Any suggestions?

Remember the important thing is not who wins between MD/Rutgers. It's that PSU loses.

NEXT....Al Golden..

Will Randy end up a coordinator somewhere?

I could see him becoming a QB coach somewhere maybe (he played QB in college) or HC at a smaller school, but I don't know if an OC role makes much sense for him. He only had one true year of OC experience (and co-OC at that) before he got the UConn job.

Never understood the hire. What was the story, you guys whiffed or passed on Mike Leach? Was anybody else in the mix when Randy was hired?

Oh man, loaded question. Long story short: the search committee that our AD hired decided that Leach wasn't a good fit for the job. Couldn't really tell you why but I know a lot of MD fans who were really hoping he would become our coach.

Another search committee also decided that Dan Mullen wasn't a good fit this time around, and we pulled out of talks with him accordingly. Not saying that he would have been our next coach if that wasn't the case, but take that FWIW.

Was Durkin a committee hire?

So do we know what the Maryland budget for assistant coaches is? I assume Shafer and London got payments on their departures but I would be interested in their salaries. It could be the assistant coaching pool where the UA money will distinguish them from us.

I don't know why Edsall was fired. In 2014, Maryland was third in the Big Ten behind Ohio State and Michigan State but ahead of Rutgers. In 2015, Edsall was fired after going 2-4 but the 4 teams were Ohio State (7), Michigan(14), West Virginia (7-5)and Bowling Green (10-3 won the Mid American Conf). The recruiting class is #36th.

Mendenhall got $3mm for assistants at UVA. haven't seen Maryland's number, but it was already high since they were paying Locksley almost $1mm for just him.

Kyle Flood. He has strong ties to NJ as ex coach of Rutgers. Strongly suggest you get him on phone and signed ASAP. As an OL coach he will shore up that unit.

Was Durkin a committee hire?

The committee seems to serve as a filter of sorts. Durkin was hired by the AD but not before the committee approved of it, basically.

As for Edsall, he 100% deserved to be fired. He lost control of the players and despite a solid start to the 2016 class, he was relatively meh in recruiting. He's not the guy to build a program with a national reputation, he's the definition of mediocrity.
