Normally, I would never start a thread for such a minor snowfall, but it is Christmas Eve tomorrow and getting any snow on that day has been pretty rare, plus the snow is likely to fall on very cold surfaces well below 32F in the 5-10 am timeframe, so any snow that falls will accumulate, even on paved surfaces, meaning there could be slippery spots, so be careful out there. For most folks who got 2" or more this past weekend, a little bit more snow tomorrow morning will mean a White Christmas for the first time in a long time (defined by 1" or more on the ground, and technically, this means more than 1/2", as they round up for this). Folks who got 3" or more, likely don't need more snow for a White Christmas (we still have 2" on the ground), given we'll barely be above 32F for about 6 hours tomorrow after about noon, but some fresh snow would still be nice.

Almost all of the main global and mesoscale models are showing a fairly weak clipper system putting down 1/4-1" for the area from 276/195 (the low end) up to 80 (the high end) with an inch or more N of 80, although there are a couple of models showing very little snow (nada to a coating) and a couple are showing 0.75-1.5" for most of CNJ/NNJ/EPA/NYC metro, including the HRRR, which did so well for the weekend storm. NWS is calling for <1" for most of the region, as per the map below, but has also issued advisories for parts of SEPA/SNJ, including Philly, for the threat of a glaze of freezing rain (with very likely <1/2" of snow); the freezing rain risk is very low north of 276/195, since temps should stay well below 32F in the column through the end of the precip (discussion is below).

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1001 AM EST Mon Dec 23 2024

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Clipper system will be over southern Ontario around midnight
tonight. Southerly flow continues ahead of this system, but
again, surface temperatures will be in the 20s through tonight,
not warming up to above freezing until later Tuesday morning. As
a result, initial precipitation will fall as snow. With the
center of the low over Central New York by daybreak Tuesday,
there will be nose of warmer air surging above 1000 mb for the
Delaware Valley and Delmarva. For these areas, there will be a
period of snow and freezing rain with a light glaze of ice
possible. 00Z HREF 24 hour probability of freezing rain greater
than 0.00 inches is generally 40 to 70 percent. As a result,
will go ahead and issue a Winter Weather Advisory for this mix
of snow and freezing rain for portions of the Delaware Valley,
including Philadelphia, for Tuesday morning. Snow is expected
for the southern Poconos, northern New Jersey, and the Lehigh
Valley, though snow accumulations should generally be less than
1 inch. Will not issue a Winter Weather Advisory for these areas
as snowfall amounts will be below criteria.

Very little change in the models and forecasts since this morning other than the NWS expanding their WWAdvisory NE-ward to include SE Bucks, SE Montco and NW Burlington, largely for the risk of a glaze of freezing rain tomorrow morning (snow will be <1" there and almost everywhere else, except maybe N of 80, where 1-2" could fall, especially towards 84). Precip should be quick-hitting from about 6 am to 11 am (and 7 am to 10 am in NB, for example).

This is likely to be more impactful on the roads than this past weekend's event, even though much less snow will fall, since all of the snow will accumulate on any untreated road, as opposed to very little accumulation on roads a few days ago (except well NW of 95). So, be careful on the roads before about noon, when the snow will be over and temps will be back above 32F.

The HRRR, which did quite well with the weekend storm, has cut down on snowfall significantly from 3/4-1" for most to 1/4-1/2" for most, but the NWS hasn't changed its forecast (most getting 1/2-3/4"). We're not talking much snow no matter what, but close to an inch of snow on roads is far different from 1/4". We'll know shortly as the snow should fall from 7-10 pm roughly for the 95 corridor (falling now in NWNJ and will fall a bit later towards the coast).

Bac started a thread about cold temperatures on a winter day, so there's nothing we can complain about you starting this thread.
It was abnormally cold as you see from the posts. Just like you would start a thread if temps were 100. Anyhoo....it's snowing in Flemington and immediately sticking to the roads and walks.

As of now (7:18 a.m.) there seems to be no precipitation in Cherry Hill. I'm hoping this proves to be a bust, at least for the Philadelphia metro area; the last thing we need is to have icy roads on a big shopping and travel day.

Well, we got 1/8" in 15 minutes which is 1/2" per hour rate, so if this goes for 1.5 hours at this rate, that's 3/4". Will take it. Every flake is accumulating so roads already covered.

3/8" in ~30 min, which is overperforming. That would translate to an inch or so over 90 minutes (looks like a 90 minute wide swath of snow by radar). Most reports in NWNJ/NEPA/SENY where the snow is about over are for 1-1.5", but they were expected to get a bit more, as the band is supposed to weaken some as it heads SE. If it doesn't I think we'll get an inch or more in most of CNJ.

Up to 1/2" in 45 minutes, so 1" is within reach. Absolutely gorgeous out there. Snow on top of snow without a single flake melting (27F still) on Christmas Eve, so we will have a White Christmas here with 2-2.5" OTG in most locations here. If you like snow, now is the time to go for a walk outside.

3/4" of snow in 1 hour is a pretty nice rate - beautiful, fluffy dendrites, so I'm guessing we're at at least 15:1 ratios (snow to liquid; typical is 10:1). Almost certainly will make 1" now and that's probably about it. Temp actually dropped to 26F. Nice view of the pond across from our house in the falling snow...

The HRRR can suck it, lol.

Just took a short walk outside… windy, snowy, cold.
For some reason I thought of our soldiers fighting in the Ardennes in 1944 under very similar conditions with no access to heat… wow

All of the new snow from today will melt later as it we will hit the upper 30s
All of the new snow will absolutely not melt today, as temps are 3-5F lower than forecast right now and will likely barely make it to the mid-30s, so we'll likely get maybe 6 hours above 32F. Some will melt, but nowhere near all. With temps going back into the 20s tonight folks should shovel before sunset.

I live in the Smyrna area so when i left for work this morning at 0630 there was no precipitation. As i'm going north on Rt 1 near the Christiana Mall i started noticing precip on my windshield and about 3-4 minutes later on 95N it was coming down hard. By the time i got to Wilmington they had about an inch of slush on the ground. Funny when looking east over the Delaware Memorial/NJ the sun was coming up...

Ended up with 1.1" of new snow, so another overperformer. Roads are very slippery with no melting during this event, which was mostly at 26-27F. This gives me about 2.5" in the front yard, which gets more sun, and 3" in the backyard, which is shadier, so a white Christmas (more than 1/2" OTG at 7 am Christmas morning, technically) is a guarantee.

1.1" + 3.3" the other day and 0.3" in a few small dustings earlier this winter = 4.7", which is about normal for December (NYC's mean snowfall is 4.9", while NB's is 4.7") and we're unlikely to get more this month.

It's melting at my place. Wait till the sun comes out.

Of course some will melt as temps go above 32F and the sun comes out by noon, but that only leaves 4-5 hours for melting, so some of the new snow will remain (snow on paved surfaces that get some travel will likely all melt).

5 hours is plenty of time. Sun will work strong.

Right around an inch in Bergen County which was supposed to be a dusting, Stopped between 8:30 and 9.

You already said this in your last thread. It's becoming normal you weather attention whore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FYI - Merry Christmas.
Always, lol. Merry Christmas to you too - sledding today with the kids? I tried to convince our 30-year old son and his fiancee to go sledding on Sunday when they came over, but it was brutally cold, so nope.
