Dykes was all of 19-30 at Cal, and the team had a losing record his last year. "Revive" is a bit of an overstatement. One last thing on Wilcox. He inherited a program that Sonny Dykes had revived from 1-11/0-9 in 2013 (and 3-9/2-7 in the prior season). While on paper 2016 (Dykes' last year) looked bad, he had losses of 4 , 10, and 3 points, but some bad blowouts too--they happen to all middling/bottom feeders!).
Cal recruiting was not terrible, the 2014 class having three 4 star recruits, the 2015 class #29 in the nation and five 4 stars, and the 2016 class #27 in the nation with a 5 star and four 4 stars (#4 in the PAC 12). Unlike when Schiano took over, the cupboard was far from bare- Wilcox had talent on the roster.

I don't know why he was fired; the timing was strange. It was thought that he had too much "wanderlust." My guess is that he didn't fit in well at Berkeley; I had thought he was a peculiar hire in the first place.
