OT: New ACC Deal To Reward Clemson and FSU?

Bus, you wonder why people come at you
Alas though, I’ll be nice, as life is short
Wait you're be nice? Oh good so I can sleep tonight because a fake RU fan is being "nice"!
You been posting for awhile that FSU will be in the Big Ten soon. Wrong!
Speaking of life is short, where were you last night??

They struck a deal
League got security, Noles got $$ based off metrics, and time / $$ off GOR
Who is this poster? The JayDog I read cursed the ACC and its leaders into infinity, already knew which BIG teams were homecoming candidates to Tallahassee and there was no amount of money to keep FSU from accepting the impending BIG invite.

Must be my imagination.

One need look no further than Texas in the Big 12.
I don't know much about the issue, but it seems to me that, we can have two teams, say Michigan and Ohio State, ask for an unbalanced payout
But, the difference with the big ten, than some of these other conferences , is that there are a few other programs not that far behind those two, Penn state eg, Wisconsin at times, and now add in Oregon,

How many programs could there be in an unbalanced
situation?
Here, we don't have two obviously better programs lording over a bunch of misfits, we have two traditionally strong ones with others right behind them

Wait, you mean we should have some doubt about his claims of donating all his money to 5 different RU sports and going to all the games while posting as if he's the biggest FSU fan alive on this board? Hmmmmm.
4 teams (football, lax, bball and werstling) and no, I don't donate a ton
I do what I can to support them

Never said no amount of money would keep FSU in the ACC
Rather, I said this was, is and always will be, all about money

It's why FSU and Clemson are doing what they're doing
If they hadn't done a thing, they'd still be receiving the same $$ as before

Thankfully, they were proactive, and though not receiving BIG and SEC $$, they gap has been significantly cut (or will be when the deal is signed)

This is really a nothing burger.

The top teams are already far, far ahead in revenue generation. Yes, this adds to the disparity, but is not going to move the needle significantly. It's already moved.

Look at the revenue already being generated by tOSU. Then in the tier behind them, Michigan, PSU and Oregon.

And it's the same teams that have generated this revenue for decades. There's no 10-year plan to close that gap. It's a 100-year plan.

It's a "here and now" reward dynamic: prioritize those programs that generate the most $$$. All others to divide up what's left. The Great State of Ohio is "all in" for their Bucks, and that Scarlet and Gray brand has spread across so many states, per the exodus of Ohioans to better climates.

Resided in Pinehurst NC for a couple decades. More than a few bars enthusiastically accommodated "Buckeye Clubs" who took over the venue on FB gamedays. So many transplants. And they were/are "fanatics."

Hard to compete against that "establishment" on and off the field. Only FB program that comes close is Notre Dame, which tremendously benefits per religious and heritage ties.

Why would the ACC renegotiate this? It was SMU’s price to pay its way into the conference.

My understanding is the ACC extended the existing agreement with ESPN at the same dollar amount. I believe SNU was supposed to pay their own way until the contract term.. Didn’t know if the extension impacted their revenue sharing timeline. Did they push it out?

Yes, they are, but we're talking conference distributions not donations or ticket sales. In the latter two cases, good for them, way to go, go team. In the former treating team's unequal by your leadership will cause resentment and leads to destabilize the conference. Which in time might be exactly what ESPN wants.

The ACC is already destabilized.
There is already resentment.

But part of it is the contract that they can't get out of. ESPN wasn't going to let go of that contract that would go through 2036 if they renewed.

With the B10 and SEC slowing down and ending any current thoughts of expansion, FSU and Clemson have no choice but to stay. With rumblings of potential push to dissolve conference, the Big12 willing to pay more (because they have a better TV contract), continued litigation, i guess it made sense to the ACC to make some concessions for the short term "stability". And maybe as they get closer to 2036 they can figure something out.

my guess is that they are taking the extra money coming from SMU getting Zero and CAL/Stanford taking hair cuts and potentially money from the ACC network that is up and running and funnelling to the top 3-4 teams. That is likely 10-20 million for those teams... but the other teams will need to live with what they currently have.

May not be the worse thing for us. With the amount of eyeballs we bring in from NY and Phli I think we'd be fine. The whole BIG West would be screwed. They would all take a huge cut.
Also… We paid in for a decade too, so that should also give us something to stand on. We bought into our equal share and paid the other members.

Thoughts of this happening in the Big Ten or SEC I believe are slim. The ACC is doing this because of they are afraid to lose members. You don't hear from any team in the Big Ten or SEC that they are looking to leave. None!
You only make this move because they are in trouble!

This is effing outrageous. We are going to have private equity rich aholes OWN a piece of the conference? And we will now be making decisions to satisfy our shareholders who have no interest in the schools or the sport, just their returns? WTF? This is the most shocking thing I've seen in college sports the past few years in an era of shocking things.

Also, private equity is for risky endeavors that a bank won't touch for a loan. And the PE investors expect BIG returns. So it's a gamble. What risky endeavor that requires a lot of money now, but where the investors expect to get PAId big time later, is the Big Ten going to do? This is a conference of mostly public institutions, and we are going to sell part of our conference to some hedge fund managers that expect big risky returns? And we are doing it to raise money for the cash strapped panicked schools so they can pay athletes? This really stinks. It feels like a get rich quick scheme. Or rather, a grab some cash now and don't worry about the payback until someone else is in charge, scheme.

If the Big Ten is getting into the PE business (I hope they don’t go down this route), then they better go with one of the biggest and most successful firms. My limited understanding of PE firms is the top tier make beaucoup bucks - for their clients as well as for the investors. Below the top tier, though … I think in the PE business, you get what you pay for.

The BIG isn't asking a PE firm to manage their assets. They are going to sell part of the conference, and a portion of all future revenues, to a venture capital PE company in exchange for some cash now. The firm we sell to doesn't matter. Only the terms of the deal. So if we do this (we shouldn't do this) we better have good lawyers and business strategists and financiers on our side so we don't get taken. But the bottom line is that, in any deal, we are permanently selling off a share of future revenue for some cash today. What are we going to do with that cash today? Probably cover new expenses, build a fieldhouse, and buy a quarterback - nothing that generates major new revenue to cover the cost of the equity investment. It seems colossally stupid.

Not going back to dig up posts. You gave assurances about the big money FSU donors leading the effort to pay up what’s needed to get the heck out of ACC and impending BIG invites with dates.

Fact of the matter is SEC and BIG did not want FSU which would be bananas to give ACC remnants over $100MM check to leave the conference and now FSU, Miami and Clemson are being given some more money by ESPN to stop litigation and asking ND to play better ACC schools. This will close the gap a bit between the BIG/SEC and ACC for a year or two and then the BIG/SEC schools will make the gap that much or wider between them and everyone else.

Congratulations are in order.

Let me ask you this

If you did the right thing and were an ideal conference mate for 30 years, produced multiple championships and revenue for the conference, under the guys of the fellow conference, partner schools and conference leadership doing the best to keep the conference at a minimum in the conversation financially as their peers and the Big Ten and SEC…

And then, in return, the conference screwed you and did not live up to their end of the bargain, thereby relegating you to possible irrevalance due to no fault of your own, what type of action (after years of sacrifice and hard work, to get to the top of the mountain and achieve consistent greatness, while your conference mates, sans Clemson, did not live up to their end of the bargain but didn’t hesitate to cash checks due to your success) would you take?
I mentioned before because I am unaware, what did the conference mates NOT do to hold up their end? The way it seems is Clemson and FSU agreed to this 'great' long term deal (along with the rest of the ACC) but are now pissed as the B1G and SEC have blown the doors off of their deal. And they are locked in with not much recourse.
Uneven treatment is the quickest way to destabilize a conference.
Yep

LOL the powers that be seem hellbent on really just blowing college football to smithereens.
This article might be pointing out why College Football now seems like it's more concerned about money then caring about it's fan base or working together so all the schools can benefit from the money to be made . In stead of only the strong survive mode that's prevalent today
The havoc surround College Football and how weak the NCAA is now could be a result of a lawsuit filed against the NCAA over 40 years ago

Although many people saw changes on the horizon, few could have imagined this much “madness” when the court ruled in favor of the University of Oklahoma back in 1984 The nearly 75-year television tug of war isn’t over, and the money it generates will continue to transform college sports.

You should - it's really not that difficult to do
Around late summer/early fall, what's happening (more $$ per year based off different metrics, shorter GOR and less buyout $$) is what I said would likely happen, based on the new info I received

I also said a settlement would be reached
This right here is the textbook definition of the term "settlement"

Addionally, the SEC / B1G not wanting FSU is beyond laughable
Think logically, not with emotion, as this is all about $$
Not feelings, not safe spaces... just $$

Again, as I've stated, the 120 million (or 150, whichever # is correct) buyout money has already been raised
If that was the set amount w/no GOR, FSU would be out tomorrow

Fact of the matter is what FSU is getting from the ACC/ESPN is exactly what Michael Alford proposed at the ACC meetings in Almeia Island last year. The ACC scoffed at the idea, leading to lawsuits by all parties.

Fast forward to now, and all indications are FSU will be getting exactly (or very close to it) what FSU originally requested
A lot of time, money and energy was wasted on attorneys to get to this point, but if the ACC/ESPN would have played ball of the jump, things wouldn't have gotten nearly this squirrely

You're correct this will suffice in the short term, but we'll be back to square one in a few years as the $$ gap will be too much. Fortunately, due to the shorter GOR (reduced from 2036 to 2031), it'll take a lot less $ to get out at that time

Furthermore, though I appreciate the gesture, I won't be accepting any congratulations as I'm simply going on what I've heard from reputable sources, it's not information I dug up on my own or was able to procure with them

Yep

Greed and money wins the day.
ACC network has been awful
Shit scheduling
Corruption by Swofford
Swoffy's son getting sweetheart deal w/Raycom at expense of league
Bad TV contracts
Etc.

Yeah, this. I’ll add that this is just a plan. The original article says that some schools may object to the financial plan that favors FSU, UNC and Clemson. I’d be especially cheesed to give money to the schools denigrating and suing the conference. Let’s see how this all plays out. At the very least, I’ll need to read reporting that categorically states that ESPN gives the ACC more money if there are more big Notre Dame games.

What is Notre Dame’s interest in doing this? The Irish made it to the NC playing a weaker schedule (albeit with some of their foes having down seasons). Also, ND is going to want a slice the financial pie.

The smoke up our collective asses on FSU joining the B1G is lingering. Now we get new rumors of FSU staying put.

The only way I see all the other ACC schools agreeing to further financial imbalances is when new money hits the table.

The settlement was always happening, it was a matter of when and what would be negiotiated

Theyd still be going forward with the lawsuit and if the ACC did not concede, which is what FSU wanted it all along (and which Michael Alford had initially propose at Amelia Island)

The new money would come from ESPN, and again this will be short-lived as the GOR now expires in 2031 and in another few years, the $$$ gap will continue to grow wider,, thus making any school that wishes to compete for titles not sustainable to stay in the ACC

If the settlement was always happening why did you keep saying that you had "inside" information from your sources that they would be announcing going into the Big Ten. Make sure you don't step in the piles of bull crap you stated trying to back out those stories.

B/c thats what they heard
Things change - this is a high stakes poker game, and initially, when i was told this, the acc wasn’t willing to play ball

Fast forward to now, and voila… the acc gives in and gives fsu what they initially asked for

Capiche?

I capiche that your full of shit. You are either too gullible listening or reading internet posts or simply making crap up that you had "inside" info to make yourself that you "knew" people involved. Either way you look like a clown for most of your posts in the last year. Capiche??
