OT: New York Yankees 2020 season

Awful, awful game last night. Two game losing streak.
I'm still wondering what Michael King has done to deserve that start.

Saw tonight's lineup and wondering what could possibly be the motivation for batting Hicks third.
Has Casey been watching his at bats this season ?

He is a warm body. They were setting up their
Starting pitchers for the play offs. They wanted
Cole starting tonight then Tanaka and so on.

The list keeps growing of relief pitchers that don't need to be brought back next season.... Cessa, Ottavino, King, Holder...

You can't blame the pitching staff for the fact that the Yanks hit zero home runs in the recent four-game series in Buffalo after recently setting a major league record for homers in the three-game series in the Bronx vs. Toronto.

After the way this year has played out...who do you guys think are still untouchables for the Yankees. Cole, of course...Torres, I would have been 100% sure of but after this year, is he still? Judge, the same.
Those are the 3 I think are, what are your guys thoughts with following them every day?

OH shit- Sorry- DJ...do anything you can to lock him up. Guy is a machine...

Yanks on road look like a totally different team.

Urshela and Vogt are set at third and first.

I like them both but do the fall into the lock them up for the next decade type of level. I think DJ has become that type of player
Gio May get there if he has another really good year next year.

I didn't like letting Didi leave back when it happened.
But now that Vogt, Gio, and DJ are set at their current positions I can't really see where they would have put Gleyber.

And he hasn't hit enough this year to make up for it...I have him up there with worst performance by a NY player this year based on talent and expectations.

To make a definitive statement of a young player's career judge based on a 60 game hybrid season is curious. If the NFL season was only 6 games.....would you be making such claims for a WR or QB who was sub-par for 4 of the 6 games?

This isn't perfect but nothing is with these guys. However, this is my opinion on how to maximize the opportunities they do generate during games, mostly based on what they've done the last week or two with a minor nod to their results of the last month or so......

2B - DJ LeMahieu the easiest pick

CF - Aaron Hicks his batting average is bad (better of late) but walks are his calling card this season. A #2 hitter you want on base any which way. A #3 hitter should be batting them in, not relying on the walk.

3B - Gio Urshela most consistent hitter of the power batters right now

1B - Luke Voit keeping up his end of the bargain

RF - Aaron Judge not there yet so put him where he can still do damage until he's as effective as he's ever been within the top three spots

DH - Clint Frazier (he and Torres need to pick it up immediately. They can but until so, the above guys stand a better chance of continuing a rally)

SS - Gleyber Torres (see Frazier)

LF - Mike Tauchman good defender, better arm than Gardner. Having a hard time (lotta guys on the team are) but hope he can contribute from the left side)

C - Kyle Higishioka not a significant "upgrade" from Sanchez but a better defender (well, at least most of the time) from the pass ball/catcher's interference/errant pick-off throw/watch-me-take-strike-one-and-then-swing-at-anything Gary Sanchez)

Subs:

Brett Gardner you can always go in if Mike Tauchman can't do better

Gary Sanchez when we need that fly ball to the warning track, we'll be in touch

Giancarlo Stanton many Yankees find joy when that stick in your hand connects with the ball thrown across the plate. Try it sometime soon. But not on this team's time.

I meant the statement as “this year”

In some ways because of Hicks OBP rather than hits, it may be better to have him bat first, DJ 2nd. If DJ leads off with a double, you need the next batter to hit, not walk.

Good stuff. Agree on most or understand your view except Kyle Higiskioka. I think he is a significant upgrade on Sanchez. Just 1/3 of the at bats of Sanchez but enough to see a big difference. 100 points higher in average. Same or actually better power production. 1 HR in every 12 at bats vs every 15 at bats for Sanchez and a much better catcher who calls a good game. Look at Cole in his last few starts.

I don't understand how anyone could think that Higashioka is in any way an upgrade over Sanchez.
Certainly not in handling a rundown.
And besides, Higgy has never shown any ability to hit.

Well his average is 100 points higher than Sanchez and he can actually catch. I'd start with that right there.

Maybe you need to compare Higashioka to Sanchez of 2020. Not the Sanchez from 2018. The guy is lost at the plate and has added a new wrinkle to his catching routine, catchers interference!

You have to resign DJ. And I love Gio. I'm giving Torres a pass in a shortened season, but agree he's a lousy SS. That means they need to find a good defensive guy for SS and that leaves a big question of what to do with Gleyber.

I think everyone, outside of Sanchez, should be back. You absolutely have to replace Sanchez. The determining factor is he's still a below average defensive catcher.

I feel like Sanchez would be a decent DH since it would take pressure off him from being a catcher, but we already have Stanton so I don’t know what you do. Maybe move him in the off-season for another under producing player I guess.

Probably time to move him. Then again, with Stanton being a walking injury, perhaps we need him as back-up DH and catcher. His time as starting catcher should be over.

I wanna agree with you. But 2020 is a very unusual season and I'm not sure how seriously to take players' numbers for the year. Gary most likely will get 2021 to show his old self. Higashioka is not the answer.
