OT: NJ Devils 2024-2025 Thread

Look into those shots, points and goals. The ones vs rangers were mostly breakaways from cherry picking/floating. Hes a non-factor when the games get heavy, he shies away from all contact

A shot is a shot, a goal is a goal, a point is a point.

We know he’s not a physical player - no need to keep harping on it unless you have a serious issue with the kid. Again, very weird post

That would be the job of someone trying to discredit Hughes in a debate.

I will say he is definitely shying away from contact in this tourney. He was doing this a ton early in the NHL reg season coming back from shoulder surgery but has engaged more as the season went on. It is more obvious in the 4 nations thus far, but and this is what is really important here, he's still highly effective.

Vs the Rag's in the playoffs 2 seasons ago there really was no sign of this. In fact he did lay at least one pretty big hit in that series. I'd say he was more then highly effective in that series, he was dominant. But he hurt the shoulder vs Carolina and wasn't nearly as effective afterwards. Still had 3 goals and 6 points in 5 games.

There’s this American born player who wore #88 for the blackhawks . Small in stature and not physical at all. He had no problem helping his team win 3 Stanley cups and a conn smythe. I’m not worried about jacks physical game bc it’s not his game . Scoring and play making is .

The last thing on my mind after watching that great USA game last night was to go to rags board and go trolling . I guess that’s where the high noons you were drinking kicked in KYK

So did Gretzky, Mario, Kane, Leech, I could name over a 100 great players who shied away from all contact. You're one of the most stupid people when it comes to hockey and let's not forget last year during the playoffs you claimed Lafreniere was going to be a superstar this year lol.

They also got in tight and battled for pucks. Jack doesnt. He was completely un noticeable last night

Jack is electrifying and tough as nails, he doesn’t back down from anyone.
He’s every bit as fast as McDavid and McKinnon.
Sullivan didn’t play him 18 minutes for no reason, he’s a threat every time he’s on the ice

As a Devils fan I do admit he avoids certain situations, namely being in tight between the boards and a defensemen, especially at speed.

But it's not because he isn't a competitor. It's because he's been hurt 3 different times going into those situations. Maybe over time as he strengthens his shoulder so as to be less vulnerable he begins going back into those situations but right now he doesn't and imo it's a smart decision.

And he has learned ways to win the puck despite giving up that inside position. So it hasn't been a serious drag on his performance.

Ditto Wayne Gretzky and Guy Lafleur….Pretty good company.

True, (granted I've seen very very little of Lafleur and really not even all that much of Gretzky) but yeah non physical yet dominant players.

Wonder how much PK those guys played in their careers. A roll Hughes has excelled in of late.

Yes. His only problem is trying to be to fancy with the puck & too nonchalant at times. None of that stuff in this tourney. No time. Good lesson for him.

Youre watching a different play than I am. He played him for 18 minutes because hes on austin matthews line haha

8 wins in 22 games since Christmas. CBJ now 6 pts back of NJ with 2 games in hand. Where is this GM? He rightfully took his flowers after the 2022-23 season. Since then, what exactly has he done? Last season, coaching and goaltending were serious problems. He waited far too long to address either of them. Coming into this season, it was clear the team needed grit and toughness. He over-addressed that to the detriment of actual skill. This team is somehow in a playoff position, with arguably the worst bottom 6 in the NHL. They've gotten 2 points out of the 3C and 4C positions in the last TWENTY FOUR games. This team is screaming for a shakeup.

Theyre far too small of a team up front. Theyre not built for the playoffs. Thats the issue.

Far from the issue. The issue is we have Tatar and Palat as top 6 forwards. Team has zero depth. That’s the issue
Definitely not ideal but the biggest issue is the devs core guys who they rely on to lead them are way too tiny. Youre not going anywhere any time soon if your top guys up front are hughes, bratt and nico, way too tiny

Disagree…far from the biggest issue. 3c and 4c have 2 points total the past 15 games. That’s the biggest issue…bar none.

Hughes was fine in his first playoffs 2 years ago. Point a game player….

Bratt, Hischier not the greatest playoff stats but far too small a sample size to say they’re not built for playoffs.

This biggest issue with this team right now is depth - and Bratt, Hischier and Hughes are some of the sole reasons the team is in a playoff spot right now.

Im not talking this season, im talking long term. Devils are in a tough spot. Way too tiny with the core guys. Fitz went all in on speed and skill over size. Not a good way to build a winner

long term can be fixed. Not worried about “long term”…

I think most devils fans are worried about now.

This isn’t an ideal way to build a winner either:

Ondrej Palat $6.0 million
Dawson Mercer $4.0 million
Tomas Tatar $1.8 million
Erik Haula $3.1 million
Nate Bastian $1.3 million

Talking NOW - our depth is the issue.

Not easy to fix. The guys you need are expensive and the devs have big $$$ locked up in tiny guys.

It’s all relative. Its going up for everyone, not just the devils.

Another issue is timo kinda sucks for the money hes paid

He’s gotta start scoring - but he’s been the best player lately.

At 5v5..his expected goals per game is .84 - tied with the best player in the world - Connor McDavid.

I don’t think you’ve been watching the devils if you think Timo “kinda sucks” recently. Yes, he’s been snake bitten and isn’t scoring - but he’s been generating great opportunities and has been one of the better devils. Keep in mind his line mates have sucked and he’s not on PP1 either. Hes been fine.

Yeah the Timo slander from the Devils fanbase is a little much. He's at -6.6 goals above expected, a sign that he's been ridiculously snake-bitten. You can see it watching the games. If that number was even at 0 and he was sitting on 22 goals right now, nobody would be saying anything. That said, we need him to start burying these. He needs to contribute if you're getting absolutely nothing from the bottom 6. He had 18 goals and 13 assists in the 2nd half last year, so hopefully it starts to happen for him.

The bottom 6 is the bigger concern. Bastian and Dowling are not NHL players. Haula, Tatar and Lazar are offensive black holes. That's 5 guys in the forward lineup on a nightly basis that offer nothing.

Palat, Noesen and Cotter would all do well to move down a line. Cotter is a perfect 4th liner. I don't think the plan was ever for Noesen to be a regular RW2. And Palat...well...

It's also time to start having a conversation about Mercer. His regression has been staggering.

Fitz needs a top-6 winger and a 3C badly.

They’ve needed a 3C for months with the way Haulas play has regressed this season. Plus Go get Palmieiri back for one of our extra seconds

Agree.

Markstrom activated. Daws down to Utica. Knew they would do this. IMO Daws is better than Allen. Would have kept all 3 as I'm sure Allen wouldn't have gone to Utica. Send a forward down & double shift guys.

A VERY tough week ahead for them! Glad he is back. Get 2 out of 3 this week and it will help their confidence.

Jacks frail man. Again, i said if many times before and ill say it again. The devs top dogs are far too tiny

Stfu you insufferable kunt. Stick to the Rangers thread if you can't stop being such a ****ing dickhead
Last week I say hes frail and cant really handle contact to which you denied. Now he slides into the boards and is broken in half and I point it out so youre mad.

Again, devs top guys are too small. That doesnt hold up in the playoffs when the game gets more physical. Jack cant handle contact, its an issue

Go **** yourself and get lost. No one here trolls the Rangers thread, why are you here? Kunt.
